Awful videogame character design: Looking for examples

Being someone who draws and paints for a living, I have a lot of interest in art in videogames, from background assets to weapon designs and character designs. Aesthetic pleasure is a major reason why I replay Uncharted 2 from time to time. The deliciously-detailed and impressively-designed backgrounds are like porn to me.

Most of the games I enjoy tend to have what I consider to be fantastic character designs, like Team Fortress 2 and  Odin Sphere. Team Fortress 2 succeeds in giving each playable character class a distinct silhoutte and just the right amount of detail to help players understand immediately what each class does. The cartoony aesthetics help to reinforce the idea that despite the violence, the world of TF2 is one that lives in the realm of humor and silly fun. As for Odin Sphere, aside from the gorgeous painterly 2D graphics, each character is unique in design, loaded with detail and every playable character has his/her own distinct color scheme that suits their personalities.

I also have a kind of a morbid fascination with terrible art, and that includes pig disgusting videogame character designs. What I mean by 'pig disgusting' is unintentional ugliness, or a failure to express what the character's supposed to be. Well-designed monsters are meant to be ugly or disgusting, but a badly-designed monster looks like something little children could have scrawled, with little care for aesthetic sense. Games like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is home for many terrifying examples of supposedly attractive characters that look like the stuff of nightmares.

There are also cases where the character design is bad in the context of gameplay. Example: Brown characters in a brown background under a brown sky. While it may make sense for a military-themed videogame to have characters wearing camouflage to match the colors of the environment, if you're playing a game in third-person and your character as well as other characters look almost exactly alike with little difference in silhoutte shape it can get pretty confusing.

I'd like you to share with me: What game(s) do you personally think have terrible character designs, and is there a reason why you consider them to be awful?

You want to know something. I'D TAKE MOST OF THESE CHARACTERS OVER GENERIC BALD SPACE MARINE ANY FUCKING DAY OF THE YEAR.

Why are people so happy to play as generic, cookie cutter characters is ridiculous.

Wait, why the hell is Agent 47 on there? His look fit his mythos so god damn perfectly that anything else would be an abomination.

The same is true, to a much lesser degree, for Kratos.

I like that your Final Fantasy jab was right after my diatribe.  I didn't realize that it was going to be at the bottom of the page, so now no one will likely read it. Oh well, this thread was never about talking about what makes for good character design, just a bunch of dudes pointing and laughing.

Oh I'm so sorry sir that the Final Fantasy characters are designed so well that my simpleton brain can't handle it! ANYONE who thinks the costumes in a Final Fantasy game are good shouldn't be dressing themselves. Piss off.

Yes, very much so. I can't think of a character in a game I've hated more than Cole McGrath. Even his stupid name annoys me.

Also, Guitar Hero 3 (and beyond) has the worst character designs I've ever seen.

@Deusoma:  I just really dislike it when Final Fantasy nerds try to patronize everyone by claiming that they "just don't get" why the series is so good. It's not, and most gamers in the West agree. It might fly with a Japanese audience and that's fine, but trying to tell me its good and my poor, helpless Western brain just cant comprehend what makes it so good really rubs me the wrong way.

More people need to read this. So many good or decent character designs being posted here that really shouldn't be here. It is fine if you hate the character, but the design can still be considered good.
Most Final Fantasy designs though... yeah, not liking it. When an outfit loses any concept of practicality, while at the same time looking like a demented clown threw up on you, it is not good in my book. But then again, I hate everything Final Fantasy, so I might be swayed by that.

Cole McGrath looks like an anorexic Chuck Lidell. Man is stimming in douche bag aura. Famous users of that aura include Alex Mercer, Mike Thorton, Default Man Shep.

Man, I always wished the main character of InFamous was a masked luchadore, and his comrades were fellow luchadore. Everything about that game is great except for the completely unlikable main characters ( Trish, Cole, and Zeke ).

It's pretty ridiculous how much people are crapping on characters from fantasy games.  They're supposed to be "out of this world" and thus look nothing like normal people.

Great. Now for me to understand why that would be, you're going to have to give me some examples and explain your reasoning behind them.

BUT WAIT

Before you do, just consider this for a second...if the over-designed character you are going to post may possibly be a religious leader or practitioner, consider this photo:

Or if the excessively coloured character you are going to post just may be from a tribal setting, consider this photo:

Or if the hyper jeweled and intricate character you are going to post might by chance stem from a rigidly structured hierarchy of soldiers, consider this photo:

Or if the intricately patterned, ornate character you are going to post may exist in a world that has heavy religious/spiritual leanings intertwined with the governing and military body, consider this photo:

Or if it's a heavily strapped and accessorized character, who enters into battle wearing little armour and shit loads of bullshit, just might be from a remote, honour based society, consider this photo:

Or if it's just standard soldiers hanging about in ridiculous clothing, hats, vibrant colours, wacky patterns, little of any use, consider this photo:

Or if it's general citizens, especially youth, consider this photo:

And then, while you're considering all of those pictures, you also consider that they come from the farthest corners of the world, from a variety of different cultures, all with different customs, rites, habitats and histories. That the world is a big place and the wider the breadth of environments that one is exposed to, the greater the sense of wonderment and interest one will find. And then have all of this consideration topped off with the cherry of knowledge that video games are supposed to be visually interesting. And that these characters exist in a world with fucking magic.

Oh, and if you want to get into how the characters don't fit into their own specific environmental design, i could drum up some reference material for you to consider for that too, but i'm looking to learn today. Please, continue.

And he is a mold so you can go in and customize him how you wan't him to be, So it's no use judging a blank slate character.
Thats like making fun of the blank slate character from Soul Callibur. There just isn't a point.

Seymore from Final fantasy X

 My hair is sad...
 My hair is sad...
Mages as a general whole, should have robes. But keeping the same old robes forever is boring as hell so i see what they were trying to go for by making
a new style of magy robes. sadly for them they ended up making a character that looks like a male Geisha with very very sad mickey mouse hair.
I mean look at his waist, His belt looks like a backwards obi.
i get him looking like a female because he was supposed to be a pretty boy and we all know there are a lot of them in final fantasy history.
its a popular thing in Japan. So thats not the horrible part, They also tried to make him a threataning antagonist. And that was just laughable, i never once took him as a serious threat.
I also can't tell if those marking on his face are hair or veins or maybe even scarring, But scars in such a shape are unheard of. unless someone make a bladed mold of
that spacific symbol then punched him in the head with it. I suppose that would explaine it.
i think the only part that I like from this entire picture is his staff, I think mages should have very decorative staves, it adds to the mage like quality of a character.

@garbagewrappedinskin: As far as your real-world examples go, I actually think Primarch Dysley is a good design, if a little too on-the-nose for me. I believe the African tribal picture was an inspiration for Vanille, so let's talk about that. I am personally uncomfortable with her design, as it continues FFs tradition of sexualizing underage girls. I'm no prude, but it's just not something I look for. Serah too seems to cater to the whole schoolgirl look, which, in addition to her betrothal to a guy twice her size, makes me a little queasy. Fang's "amazonian sexpot" design I'm particularly fond of, but I thought it was a little odd that her design and Vanille's have so little common ground between them, considering that they come from the same village.

In any case, I happen to think FFXIII is one of Nomura's best batch of characters, and a signal that he is making his way back from the precipice. As I said, I think his style became excessive in FFX to the point that the main cast doesn't fit in with the world they inhabit. Seymour, Tidus and Lulu are the characters I really don't like the look of. Yet others, like Yuna, Auron and Jecht are totally awesome. When I say they don't fit in with the environment, usually I just mean that they are comical or ridiculous, like Seymour's hair and Lulu's belt-dress, but in other cases it is because outfits are impractical for movement or combat, or inappropriate for Spira's largely tropical climate. And in other cases, it's simply a knee-jerk emotional response: for instance, I don't like yellow, or pants of asymmetrical length, so that factors into my distaste for Tidus's design. What's the reason? None at all, other than that I don't like it. I hope that helps.

This thread basically exists so that people can criticize baroque artistic style.  Because that's what all these intricately designed Japanese characters are based on.  Baroque became extremely popular in Japan, and still is.  This topic has turned less into examples of bad character design and more into an argument over stylistic choice.

As someone who likes a wide array of styles, all in their proper place, I would be extremely upset if the design on the robot suit, the environment and the robot enemies in Vanquish was changed to make it more closer to Red Dead Redemption.  It would be a real bummer if Mario's identifiable round shapes were changed to harder lines, a la 90s Marvel work.  Interestingly enough, the two series most lambasted for baroque art moved to that style after spending most of their early period with romantic stylized concept art and gothic and fantasy assets.

I'm baffled as to how i've "assaulted" you by responding to your claim. Your response was glib because it glossed over the meaning of my explanation and simply focused on a common trope for Final Fantasy designs. Your response had "superficial plausibility", and that's not an insult either, if that's what you meant to say.

And this may blow your mind, but...zippered shoes:

They're actually really nifty and make it so that your laces never come undone. But that's really beside the point. I was "picking and choosing" Final Fantasy X because it has gotten the most criticism in this thread, specifically, Tidus. When most dudes say that they hate "Final Fantasy" designs, they generally mean that they hate Nomura (FF6,7,8,10,11,13) designs, with a dash of Yoshida (FF 12, 14, Tactics, Vagrant Story). Basically, the "belts and zippers" look. The zippers thing has always bugged me, as most of the mainline FF designs lack superfluous zippers (save the one on Sleipnir's ass in FF13). The man does love his straps and buckles though. Call it a trademark.

I'm not going to defend this shit to the ends of the earth; there are some that i like and some that i don't. I find them to be consistently high quality in the same way that i can look at top end fashion designers and appreciate their work too.  Stuff that is fit for the runway is not practical for heading to the office (or even the club) but it is visually interesting. Most of the numbered FF designs have practicality to some extent (with exceptions) but are mainly meant to be dazzling.

You can't get any worst than this. The president of ninja theory paste his own head on the character and calls himself dante.

That truly is ridiculous.  I can't believe Capcom actually approved that shit. "
the funny thing is that ninja theory gave them a very "safe" design first and capcom actually wanted them to do something crazier (in the interview they said something along the lines of "they told us to show them a design that would make them angry") ...so they were basically looking for controversy.
