Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

Games that would probably have made this list if I had a chance to play them: Far Cry 4, inFamous: Second Son, Forza Horizon 2 and Bayonetta 2.

List items

  • I'm only a mere 80 hours into this game at the time I write this but this game continues to impress me to no end. It's beautiful, vast and wonderfully written; I could ask for little more when it comes to an RPG. I will still happily be playing this game well into 2015.

  • In my opinion this is still the worst of the 'Souls' series (Demon Souls, Dark Souls) but that said it is still a fantastically put-together game. I played this game on and off (mostly on) for six months and believe I saw roughly 95% of what the game had to offer in my 100+ hour single playthrough. I really enjoyed coming back to this game when all the DLC had dropped and plowing through that in a matter of weeks as well. And I'm sure I'll be back again when Scholar of the First Sin drops in 2015.

  • I'm not quite how many hours I put into the PC version of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. I mean last I looked it was around 400 hours across all five level 70s I have but I am not sure how much was base game versus this expansion. That said Blizzard completely rebuilt how loot was handled in Diablo III and made it endlessly replayable. This is a game I have fun with playing for 15 minutes or 5 hours and I will always keep installed.

  • This is a game I had zero expectations for and only sought to try it out because people wouldn't shut up about it upon its release. This game only has only a single new idea (the Nemesis sytem) but the other two components that make it up are extremely solid, if unoriginal. I don't think I fell for it quite as hard as some people but it is still an extremely fun game to roll through with a fantastic PC port.

  • I was fairly excited for this game but it kept getting delayed which killed my enthusiasm for it slowly bit by bit. I still feel that the end result may possibly be the most authentic and fun throw-back style action game to date which means the wait was well worth it. Amazing music, refined platforming and fun abilities made this game a fun romp the entire way through. The asking price of $15 was a steal for this game.

  • I'm quite certain I put more time into Tropical Freeze than 99% of the people that actually gave it a chance and played it. I really enjoyed Donkey Kong Country: Returns on Wii and this is a game that surpasses that reboot in every possible way. I didn't beat quite every stage on the Hard mode unlocked by beating the game but I came real close. As good as Shovel Knight was this game has so much more well-designed content that I enjoyed on and off for months after its release.

  • I'm not even a dozen hours in and I already know The Pre-Sequel is nowhere near the game Borderlands 2 was. That said I still love the base Borderlands game-play and this game still has the habit of making me smile at the dumbest possible things. This was a recent Steam sale pickup and there is no doubt I will get my money's worth by the time I'm done with it, I just hope the DLC is of a more consistent quality this go-around.

  • Another game I waited for a fairly substantial price drop for. Having beaten this game on its highest difficulty the first time through (per a recommendation) I can say I wouldn't have felt bad paying double what I did for it. This is the only shooter on this list (besides Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel which is more than just a pure shooter) but I have to say it is a very well made one. This is a game where you can tell the developers very obviously cared about the game they were making and it shows and I can't help but appreciate that.

  • I only started and finished South Park: The Stick of Truth over the couple weeks. While the game-play and controls are only average at best, the places this game goes are extreme and hilarious. Well worth seeing through to the end just to see how far it actually goes.

  • This game would have been higher on my list if it weren't plagued by a large amount of frustrating bugs. I still loved this game, much more so than the original Shadowrun Returns. It is so much more expansive and full of choices that few other games are capable of offering. Like South Park the game-play here is only around average at best but the world created here is one absolutely worth exploring.
