Mystery Science Theater 3000 plied their trade in terrible movies, though some of them were pretty entertaining on their own. Space Mutiny, Hobgoblins, and Manos: The Hands of Fate are so irredeemably awful that they're hysterical.
Blue Dragon had those stupid little "action" bits in that seemed completely out of place. Lost Odyssey isn't bad, but it felt a little too generic to me. Eternal Sonata is batshit crazy, but it's also completely gorgeous and that's the one I'd recommend. :)
I haven't played Tales of Vesparia yet, but in a similar vein, the latest Star Ocean wasn't bad. The combat mechanic was really well implemented, I thought.
I might seem like a pussy, but I'll be playing it on Easy. I don't really play RPGs (or frankly, any game) for the challenge, and more the experience of playing through it, and immersing myself in the story and the characters.
As for if it's any good for a novice RPG'er, I gotta think Bioware would've made some choices available for the newcomers to the genre - especially on the console versions.
I have some very hazy memories about playing Spider-Man on my brother's 2600. After that, it's probably all C64 games, like Paradroid, Time Tunnel, or Paratrooper.
I apologise if this has been posted before, but its too priceless not to share again:
Now, assuming its not some elaborate internet hoax, it's kind of amazing. I love how the "XD" isn't recognised as being someone laughing, so its Grog XD!
