District 9: Movie of the Year?

I just returned from seeing District 9, and let me tell you something! This is a movie that I would definitely call a must-see! To me, this is a movie best suited for viewing with as little knowledge about it as possible, so you won't find any spoilers here.

From the intriguing documentary-like opening to the climactic battle, District 9 is sure to have your complete and undivided attention from start to finish. It takes sci-fi in a eerily realistic direction, from the inherent racism that we sure know would be an issue to the twist that's both horrifying and totally awesome. Even the cliffhanger ending is done in a way that makes you feel that weren't cheated out of a conclusion, and provides enough mystery to ensure you'll be eagerly awaiting District 10, or whatever they decide to call the next one.

I would go so far as to call this the movie of the year, what about you guys? What were your thoughts on it?

Movie of the year is a stretch. Movie of the summer season would be more applicable to me. But even then it'd be number 4 or so. In my mind, anyway.

Yeah, maybe so, after all, it's only August, but it's been a long time since I've been to a movie that received a standing ovation at the end. No way it'll be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's a movie that speaks to a lot of people.

I think the standing ovation thing is dependent on the theater you go to and the people you see it with. When I saw Transformers 2, it got an ovation by people. Not that the ovation isn't a good judge of quality, just that it shouldn't be used as a primary barometer. I'm sure many people will like it and all the Armond White's of the world will find some silly reason to rag on it ("Blah blah apartheid"). I thought it was enjoyable, at the very least, and worth the praise it's getting. I agree that different people will get different things from it. But I think there's something there for everyone, at least. And that's more than can be said for a majority of movies.

You do make a good point with that. Looking back, I suppose there where quite a few teens who I presume had come just to see stuff blow up, so maybe that's why.

What can I say? The people in the theater when I saw it literally applauded whenever Megan Fox was on screen. So it didn't exactly take much to get them excited.

Am I the only one who would rather see an actual fox rather then Megan Fox? Because foxes are cute and awesome. =P

Apartheid, with extraterrestrials, Alien Nation, with even uglier Aliens. Relatively unknown actors, and a director whose only experience is with music videos. Hype machine running 24/7. We'll see.

District 9 was really good, I saw it yesterday. Much of the praise it's receiving is well warranted. I would indeed like to see it get some award attention.

But everyone is billing it as the sci-fi movie of the decade. In case you didn't see it, this summer had another spectacular sci-fi release in Duncan Jones' Moon.

If you haven't seen Moon, and I suspect many of you haven't since it was a limited release, please treat yourself and see it if you can. Sam Rockwell is more deserving of a best actor nod than anyone I've seen this movie season. It's slower paced than District 9 and distinctly different in style. But what it lacks in action it more than makes up for in its downright chilling and terrifying study of hopelessness, isolation, and humanity. It was one of those movies that I didn't stop thinking about for days after I had seen it. My favorite movie of the year with District 9 taking a backseat to it.

What. A. Dissappointment.

I had high hopes for this movie, and it really let me down.

The concept is good, but it devolved into a run-of-the-mill action movie with some serious holes in the plot and contrived plot devices. Halfway through the movie, it abandons the 'documentary' pretense, and from then on it's just a giant firefight with alien weapons in south-african slums.

**SPOILERS**

Why was the tube of fluid the ship's fuel, but ALSO somehow an alien mutagen? And if they went home at the end, why couldn't they have gone home all along? Why did the aliens come in the first place? If they had insanely powerful weaponry, why did they let themselves be put into slums? And why was there almost no exposition about the aliens? Who was the lead alien character, why is he more knowlegable and intelligent?

Seriously Mr Peter Jackson, stop being so fucking lazy.

As long as there are limited release dramadies starring Zoey Dechawhateverthefuckherlastnameis in a quirky role, there is no chance that this will ever get an Oscar for anything besides special effects. It's unfortunate really. (I've got nothing against Zoey it just seems like she's the new "critic's darling").

Yeah, I hear that. Zooey Deschanel is actually one of my favorite actresses, but I really don't like media darlings. As for District 9, I would never expect any awards ceremony to look at a sci-fi picture on the same platform as some other drama.

Ponyo.  Awesome.  But Miyazaki's work is always awesome.  The fact that the entire film was done using traditional animation rather than computers is impressive enough.

District 9 is great, but I wouldn't say Film of the year.  Its a good movie, but it really comes down to individual taste.

It was a very good movie. One of the cooler ideas to come around in a long time. The setting made for some very interesting scenes. At the same time, there are parts I wish were explained in more detail. I only wanted there to be more. Why the shuttle thing fell off the ship for example...

Movie of the year....well, I've seen 500 Days of Summer and I think it was better. I'll leave it at that!

One more thing, Moon and D9 are both excellent sci-fi movies. We got lucky this year if Avatar turns out to be even decent.

This is easily my favorite movie of the year. There was an amazing amount of depth in Christopher Johnson and his son, Wikus van de Merwe made for a very compelling lead. A simple man, who loves his wife and his life, then thrown in between the prawns and the MNU's fight for their technology. Great action scenes, excellent plot development and pacing. I'll defnitely see it again.

Moon is currently my movie of the year so far, though I'm yet to see District 9 with it coming out early september in England. I might actually buy my first blu-ray when Moon is released on disc, and that's saying something.
