Nico's Top 10 Games of 2014

I don't own a PS4 or an Xbox One. I haven't even owned a Wii U for more than a month. I am what you would call a retrophile at this point in my video game career. I want to say that this current generation has nothing to offer me. But the more I thinking back on this year I can't help but realize that a good chunk of my positive gaming highlights were on the Wii U.

So, this list is gonna have a lot of games that aren't from 2014. Hell, some of these games aren't even from the last decade! Despite this, I highly encourage you to check out any of the games on this list.

List items

  • I could go on for days about all the things I love about Mother 3, but it's really something you should just experience first hand. Even if you don't like RPGs please give this game a try. It is one of the few games I consider to be a masterpiece.

  • This game.

    This fucking game.

A perfect love letter to NES you could say. I have beaten this game 6 times since it came out and I could honestly do it another 6 times. If you've played a Megaman games, you can play Shovel Knight. A brilliant explanation of what games of the past were like and a huge point to make for the argument of keeping retro games alive, Shovel Knight just might one of the greatest games I have I ever played.

  • The Mario Kart series hit it's peak for me with Double Dash. I can't tell you how many hours I've sunk into Double Dash. God damn I love Double Dash. Double Dash.

So you can understand why MK Wii and MK 7 just didn't work for me. It felt like things were taken away from the series instead of being added. Mario Kart 8, to me, is a much needed shot in the arm to the series and makes me excited for things to come. This game is the sole reason I haven't beaten Bayonetta 2 yet and I find myself coming back to this over games like Smash and Hyrule Warriors. Hot damn! What a game!

  • No use explaining this one. It's Smash.

They definitely made up for the disappointment that was Brawl, but Melee is still king to me. I was nervous about the series' foray into the handheld world, but I found myself heavily engrossed in the 3DS version and damn near completed it fully thanks to two very long flights from Scotland this month. Perhaps thats why I wasn't going as nuts for the Wii U version when I finally had a chance to play it? Don't get me wrong: the Wii U version is definitely a must-have for anyone with the console. I just wish the 3DS version hadn't sucked up the majority of my hype.

  • Two words: MINI GAMES

Oh yeah and you can battle your Pokemon. I recently spent an afternoon with some friends playing Stadium 2 for about 6 hours and it really left an impact on me. I want to make a point to make this one of my go to party games.

  • Recently downloaded this via the Virtual Console. I think I found my new favorite fighter. Very late to the party on this one.

    Whoops

  • I never thought one of the scariest games I'd play this year would be on my iPhone. Five Nights at Freddy's is a phenomenon, a game that shows how powerful Youtube gaming channels have become. I, like many others, was first introduced to this game by Markiplier. About half way through his first video I knew I had to check this game out for myself.

You play as a night security guard for a 'Chuck E Cheese' style establishment that has fallen on hard times due to a series of murders at the restaurant and the animatronics acting up. Your job is to make sure nobody messes with the animatronics, the problem is the animatronics are free to roam around as they please at night. And they're looking for you.

Gameplay consists of sitting in one room, checking cameras, closing/opening doors and turning lights on and off to make sure you survive the night(12am-6am) before one of the animatronics stuffs you into an empty suit filled with metal and wires.

This game will test your management skills and stress you out like nothing else. It's so much fun!!!... for a few hours. After a while you definitely start to get a rhythm going and the scares disappear before this game ends. And it isn't long to begin with.

  • A wild card if there ever was one, Clock Tower 3 started as a random game from my shelf to play while I had the flu. I found myself thrown into one of the most bizarre, offbeat and unique survival horror experiences I've ever encountered. This game has an episodic, arcade-like feel which, combined with it's very anime influences, makes me very confused as to why this is a Clock Tower game. Scissor Man is in it.... well kind of.. I dunno about that part...

This game was not perfect, but I found that it was so weird that I needed to keep playing.

  • A toy more than a game. Some Swedish game company called Coffee Stain Studios decided to mix the sandbox shenanigans of old Tony Hawk games with no bug testing. The result is endless hours of stupid fun. Amazing time killer. I think they just made a Goat Sim MMO... I wonder how that is?

  • We've all played it. We all love it. Why is it 10 on my Top Ten Games of 2014 list?

120 stars. Took me 4 weekends. After 18 years! Finally! Closure!
