That maybe explains why my experience has been so drastically different than people's initial impressions.  Seems like a lot of people are playing it online too. (ps3)

I have been addicted to Lost Planet 2's single and multiplayer for a very long time now and I'm astonished that the review scores are so low.  I get a real Demon's Souls vibe from the way the game is structured, and I can see how a lot of western gamers might misunderstand what the game is trying to accomplish.  If the idea of a co-op focused online action rpg/ shooter sounds good to you, I'd recommend you give the game a shot-- it seems reviewers were a little too quick to dismiss it.  The game is really beautiful graphicially, the combat is a lot of fun and varied, and the progression systems make the game hard ot put down.  It's not the type of multiplayer that demands all players have headsets, it's more of a laid-back dungeon crawl feel.

Better yet, play it but try to play it in the way that gives them the least money.  The more people aware of how hopeless and devoid of soul this game is the better; it needs to become a shared experience that we can all point to and say "no, that's not what I want."

Just beat Kane and Lynch 2 on a rental and I feel like it stole part of my soul.  I want my 3 dollars back and I think the game probably owes me more.  The only thing that is somewhat novel is the camera approach, but the developers seem to coast on that concept and not bother with anything else remotely interesting. There was a certainly a wealth of mediocre shooting sequences, some gross cutting, swearing, more shooting, a tad more swearing, some abrupt camera cutting, a little more shooting, some shooting and then just a dash more shooting.  Nothing about the game or the world the game takes place in was fun or interesting.  Every character is dumpy and angry.  The world is dark, grey and bloody.  I understand you can swear in games now and IT'S SO FUCKING COOL LETS ALL SAY FUCK FUUUUUCCCKKKK but when it's every other word it just washes over you in a cold bath of negativity.  If want no more games that feel anything like Kane and Lynch 2.  I hope nobody bought it so we can finally be done with this forced amalgam of what uninspired people assume is fun to people that buy games.  Do yourself a favor and don't play this game.

Great post!

there's a part of me that dislikes the characterization of Samus in Other M, but I went back to reread a good chunk of the dialogue and plot in the other games and came to the conclusion that the tone of Other M was remarkably similar to the text-based games, it's just that the big difference is the addition of an actual voice, which I actually quite liked.  Do you remember the bit of voice that played when you booted up Super Metroid? ("the galaxy is at peace...") How about your snarky and silly bounty hunter buddies in Metroid Prime 3? Space pirates? Ridley? Mother Brain? How are they related exactly? Other M is just as vapid as every other Metroid game, it's just that we're older now and our new multimedia options are putting in sharp relief how awful videogame stories really are.

I also loved Prime 1, but I was sort of over it by the time Echoes came out.  Scanning was fine at first, but it quickly became chore.  Samus was sloooooowww in the Prime series.  The additional complexities of weapon and armor polarities in 2 and the crazy Wii control scheme in 3 also sucked out the joy in my opinion. I like Other M more because it's unapologetic about it being a game.  Everything totally falls apart when you apply real world logic to its presentation, but there's something kinetic and addictive in Other M that is missing from the Prime series.  My guess is that the gaming zeitgeist is moving further towards games as games-- which is to say abstract contests of skill instead of deep immersive experiences.  I'll chock that up to WoW taking over a lot of lives and people starting to get a taste for sunlight again.

I dunno, just a theory I pulled out of my ass but maybe I'm onto something!

"I haven't played this game, or any Metroid game besides the original but my only complaint as an outsider is that Other M is a terrible fucking name. It just sounds awkward. Maybe it makes sense in the story? "

Sort of, I guess.  The problem is that the story isn't really about anything but intertwining made-up names, which pretty much sums up every videogame story ever.  The cutscenes were really pretty though.

I'm curious if people who haven't played Super Metroid will be into this game.  I'm pretty sure the main reason I loved it was because the whole game was a love letter to Samus' epic adventure on SNES with some neat innovations.  Anybody have any feedback of Other M from Metroid virgins?

It caught my eye from a sale rack at the back wall.  I told myself I'd pick it up when it got cheap enough and sure enough it's damn cheap now.   I feel like 39.99 is an absolute  BARGAIN for this game.  Oh my god is it fun and the music spine-chillingly good.   All three consoles were the same price but the strange part is the stand-alone turntable was still 59.99 but the version with the game is 39.99... not sure what that's about.  Go buy this game I can't imagine it will be around much longer at that price!

Maybe I don't have a leg to stand on since I'm a dude, but it seems an awful lot like complaining about sexism in Super Mario Brothers but you could make a far greater argument for sexism in Mario.

Beck

My favorite albums in order:

1) The Information
2) Odelay
3) Sea Change
4) Midnite Vultures
5) Guero
6) Mutations
7) Modern Guilt
8) Mellow Gold
9) One Foot in the Grave
10) Stereopathic Soul Manure

There are moments I like Guerolito more than Guero but since it's a remix album I don't think it counts :)
