I think Doom Eternal is fantastic. I really didn't understand the negativity towards it last year. Doom 2016 obviously had the surprise factor and the story was better, but I thought Doom Eternal was mostly an improvement.
I absolutely love the game, it has one of the best flow states I have ever felt in a game. However it also suffers so badly when that flow state falters that its jarring and horrible. Is that a fault of the game or of the high-highs it reaches? I'm still not sure, doing more to assist this could break what is already there.
Its going to divide opinion because it forces you to play in a certain way, it is not a traditional FPS because you must respect its combat chess rules or you will fail. These rules are what creates the flow from enemy to enemy, the split-second decision making just to stay alive, but they are still massive constraints on how you play the game. You can't just run through entirely with a certain weapon you enjoy, each weapon is a counter to a specific enemy.
Learning these rules also makes the first few hours of the game hell (no pun intended)
Really interested to try the new crosshair out, there are so many things to juggle that an on screen prompt could really help me out
Spiritfarer is such an important game for this year, while I have thankfully not suffered loss, its helped me come to terms with the scale of loss to our society. The stories it has to tell have left a real lasting impact on me, especially Stanley and Alice.
Also trigger warning on Spirit farer, as I think they handle dementia very poorly in one specific quest.
I would be really interested to hear yours or others takes on why that character was badly handled or badly written. I thought it was incredibly touching, maybe my emotions blinded me to something bad.
Edit- actually I think I can see why it could be seen as bad when I replay it in my head, the final 'journey' was non-consensual. The ethics are a bit different to me because the everdoor isn't specifically codified as euthanasia or death, but it is passing on from that world. Thanks for making me think about it!
