Like most people have said/always say, less political crap. I want to learn about what the games are and their mechanics and if the story was good/ interesting, etc. Not all the terrible articles/tumblr blogs doing armchair storytelling with stuff like, "I think this character should've been a woman and this character should've been black, me me me me."

The market dictates that kind of stuff. You really think these big companies are purposely trying to lose money? No, they look at all the data and that's why there aren't more female protagonists and whatever else some people want. Nintendo released their Wii U eshop demographic data recently and it was 93% male, and that's on a freakin Nintendo platform. It's just really strange how this stuff has become the first question these "journalists" ask about a new game when most of the people that play games don't care about it at all.

I don't see what's wrong with "gamer." I mean, the word sounds kind of stupid but it makes sense that people use the label. To be a gamer you have to buy an expensive console or pc and buy expensive games. Games are also pretty long so you have to spend a lot of time playing them. You have to go out of your way to spend a lot of time and money.

The other forms of entertainment aren't really the same. Everyone grows up watching tv and movies.

I wonder if releasing a last gen version too is another consequence of this exclusivity deal, because of the XB1's tiny install base. Otherwise, why bother? Last gen sales have died and the next gen versions of new games(especially on ps4) have been outselling the last gen versions in NPD's every month.

It makes sense to make the game available to as many people as possible, though. There are still far more Xbox 360's and PS3's out there than Xbox One's or PS4's, and this will continue to be true for a long time to come. If there was a good chance that the last-gen versions wouldn't make any money, then Square Enix wouldn't be making it.

If development cost of a port is less than the projected revenue from the port's sales, then it makes sense to do it. This will probably continue for quite some time, look how long multiplatform games were still released for the Xbox and PS2 during the beginning of the last console generation.

Most of the people in those huge install bases aren't actively buying new games though. Going by NPD's and also some of Ubisoft's financial reports, which showed that 75% of Watch Dogs sales were on next gen, It just doesn't seem worth it to keep making these last gen ports. And these low numbers for last gen are for games from within 6 months of launch of the new consoles. It's gonna be even lower by the time this next Tomb Raider comes out in late 2015. Doesn't seem like a smart move.

So much surrounding this game seems like a bummer.

There was also Hellblade and The Tomorrow Children off the top of my head. And Bloodborne looks incredible. Pretty good showing.

@spaceinsomniac: Nice charts. The ps4 has so many more games coming out on a monthly basis it's crazy.

"Console exclusive! Timed exclusive! The video game industry has done a great disservice to the term exclusive, so much so that we're prone to disbelieve the phrase the moment it's uttered."

I don't understand what's wrong with those terms. If the xbox press release or Spencer would have actually used "timed exclusive" or "exclusive debut" or whatever, everyone would have known what they meant. The only really confusing phrasing I've seen was the way MS worded this deal specifically and it's good they're being called out by everyone.

Word going around that it's only a timed exclusive
