Best Games of 1999

The year of the thinking-person philosophy games like System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment, and Persona 2. Also, the year that multiplayer games took as step forward in quality (Quake 3, UT).

But this year was also a year of missed opportunities on the RPG front. Chrono Cross was a sequel yet not a sequel, a mess thematically, and suffered from Suikoden syndrome with too many characters. I only wish this was a better follow-up to one of the best games of all time; there was so much promise too with the great music, graphics, and gameplay.

Then there was another lackluster follow-up with Final Fantasy VIII, which had its boring as fuck beginning, awfully developed love story and unforgivably bad last half of a plot. All of this alongside a terrible magic draw system and one of the worst dream sequences in the history of video games, if not all modern media. But the game did have some fantastic music, great set pieces (Timber mission, assassinating the Sorceress, why the fuck are we in space again oh who cares this looks great), and the sweet Triple Triad card game.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin was the closest to a satisfying RPG despite its adolescent understanding of symbolism and meh gameplay. In fact, it may have been forward thinking for examining how the information age can lead to people believing in rumors/opinions so much that they become true. That said, the story leaned too heavily on the same character tropes for nearly every character: my parents mistreated/didn't pay attention/wanted a different future for me. Also, the fusion system was too complicated and the dungeons were bad.

Bottom line, though, this year will be remembered for the best games not involving a lot of thinking other than just jam out to music and have a good time - RollerCoaster Tycoon, Tony Hawk, Crazy Taxi and the trio of great racing/kart games (CTR, Rush 2049, Star Wars Racer).

List items

  • System Shock 2 is probably the "correct" answer for best game of the year based on its innovation, but I just had so much fun playing RollerCoaster Tycoon that I can't help myself. This game has its flaws

  • I like "Alien" more than "Aliens." I also liked the old Metroid games quite a bit for their atmosphere. So, it makes sense that this creepy as fuck survival game spoke to me as much as it did. But, I still hated the inventory management and the shooting/controls did not feel as fluid as Half-Life.

  • A fantastic strategy game that had some wild difficulty swings. I'm glad this one has stood the test of time. For me, this should almost be required playing in history classes and I think many more kids would care.

  • I have a softer spot in my heart for Red/Blue but I'm willing to recognize that Gold/Silver were better games. The use of a day/night cycle was slightly annoying and the feeling that I'd played this game already with a different coat of paint did cross my mind frequently.

  • Just before the 90's end, Tony Hawk provides the quintessential 90's feel in a video game ever. The music, the style, and a worthy replication of a misunderstood teen sport was better than it had any right to be.

  • This was the city-builder I fell in love with. I'm sure people have more affinity for 2000 or Sim City 4, but 3000 came out at the perfect time for me. Sure, laying pipes wasn't my favorite thing to do, but watching the city grow, then smashing it with all those disasters was very satisfying.

  • I have played this game so many times and had so much fun. Just play it, listen to Offspring, and have a good night. Not much more you can ask from a game.

  • This is probably the last game I liked with poor controls. It also had dinosaurs, some outrageous boss battles, and a better female lead than Lara Croft.
