Have you thought about the PS1 Breath of Fire games?  A little old school and a bit tough to get your hands on, but you get to turn into a fucking dragon...

I think I like the characters in FF9 to be the best of any in the series.  Especially Vivi.
While Zidane does come off a little bit Naruto-ish I find it a bit better than the loner  "... It's not my problem" Cloud or Squall or the bitchy, whiny Tidus.  Then there's Vaan who you could really forget even exists...

Two shows I remember are Bump in the Night and Johnson & Friends.  Kids these days don't know what they're missing.

There were some golden quotes in Full Metal Jacket.
