Inovae Studios have announced an approximate Q3 target for Early Access release along with a Steam store page.

The devs have come a long way getting this game to this point with a meager $300K crowdfunding budget and the performance of the game even in its alpha state is superb.

@soulcake: I have a GTX 1060 and it runs well for me. The key for good performance is to have a minimum of 16Gb RAM and installed on an SSD. Save the goat sacrifices for the server gods. They are especially cruel at the moment :P

Once upon a time Valve decided to sell games and it was welcomed with torches and pitchforks the same way this store is. The real test will be how well Epic can innovate amongst the existing stores.

Temporary exclusivity is a smart move by Epic to get a foothold in the market. The devs and publishers are simply channeling customers through a better revenue stream and it cements some guaranteed funding for development of the storefront. However, they need to phase that practice out once the store client is updated with useful features. It is important they try to be a part of the competition and not try to stifle it with extended exclusivity.

That being said, any comparison to consoles or streaming services falls flat a bit because you literally have all the clients installed on one piece of hardware with no subscription model so there is no additional cost to access exclusive content (yet). I'm sure future game streaming services will be a different story.

Squadron 42 is scheduled for beta testing mid 2020 but expect that to slide a bit to later in the year. CIG's primary focus is on that game so more resources will get freed up for the MMO later. I would guess the MMO won't be fully realised until 2022 at the earliest.

Now that the NDA has officially lifted, for those that were able to get a key for their alpha signups what do you think of the game so far?

@adamxkuhn: The gameplay loops are still quite rough or barely existent so I would say give it a year for more of the 3.x content to be patched in. If you have created an RSI account and get the newsletter, there should be Free Flight events advertised during the year so you can try it out for free to see where it's at.

Anthem feels very much like a repeat of Andromeda's mistakes. Aside from the combat gameplay which seems to be engaging enough, the major flaw I see is that there is not enough of an establishing story to bring the player into the world. The writing and editing of the dialogue is very stilted and arbitrary. The whole reason Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc were all successful was because they provided an engaging entry ramp into the game and helped the player understand their place. This gave you impetus to explore and engage with the world around you.

All the pretty particle effects and shaders in the world aren't going to cover up the messy soul of a game and it doesn't look like there is any reason to care about this one. I hope Bioware Edmonton can break out of this obsession with cliched banal cash cow production and actually try to create something with an engaging story again.

I avoid those games for the same anxiety reasons. The problem I see that conflates the fear is the impostor syndrome you get with the perceived expectation of "getting good" to perform well enough. When you are at a casual level of experience coming into a game where there are people spending thousands of hours playing, it makes you feel useless in comparison.

The best counter to this fear is to find a group of like minded players that don't have those expectations of their team mates and simply want to participate in the game. Some small streamers will let you participate if you get involved in their channel for example and there are so many now that you are bound to find a group that is like-minded.
