Under Rated Games

Just a list of some of my favorite games that weren't appreciated at the time of release.

List items

  • Open, Oblivion-like world in a shooter... yeah I'm in. Absolutely gorgeous game that creates one of the more believable environments this side of Bio Shock.

  • I have a hard-on for anything turn based, but give me a game that's turn-based AND has destructible levels and I'm in love. The sequel was horrible, but the first game was bliss.

  • It's funny how many people bitch about the death of PC RPGs and yet haven't played NWN2. Yes, yes, I didn't like the first one either, but this one is awesome. More importantly, you control a full party of 4 and there's an actual reason to play a non-melee char. Great game and great story, more people should have played this.

  • I know a lot of people that liked Max Payne, but not the sequel (it generally scored lower reviews). Why? It's possibly one of the most engaging stories in a video game ever made.

  • I know I'm in the minority here, but Quake 2 is the finest game in the series. The multiplayer, while slower, was much more strategic and with mods like Q2RA2, was the pinnacle of online deathmatch.

  • This game got mostly bad reviews for it's lack of story and rushed release state. The mod community was able to patch it up pretty well and it remains the best interpretation of DnD that I've ever played.

  • As far as I'm concerned Blade Runner marked the end of the golden age of adventure gaming. It took the source material to heart and is the only license movie I can think of that has you playing through the timeline of the source material, but not as the main character. Very weird, very cool game.

  • Before rhythm mini-games became standard in almost any title, Indigo Prophecy had a game full of them, wrapped around a huge twister of a story.

  • AO had quite possibly the worst MMO launch that I can remember. The game was unplayable at release. Those that stuck with it though were treated to the first truly deep MMO. A good portion of the ideas that are common in games like WoW, started out in AO.

  • The fallout game everyone forgets about. Take the fallout theme and AP system and turn it into a pure level based TBS game and you have one of the few games I return to every year.

  • Recently started replaying this one and it's amazing how different this game is from most modern FPS games. From the setting, to the gun jams to the GPS system it's just an extremely ambitious title. I really think the Far Cry name hurt this one.

  • Yes, it's a pretty vanilla MP shooter. But it's also the most balanced class based shooter I've ever played. There, I said it. TF2 fans can kill me now.

It's good to know someone likes Fallout Tactics...  I wonder if I should give that game a chance (they're selling it at GOG for like 6 or 10 bucks, I think).

The kona played Anarchy Online a lot.  I played it a little bit.  It's a bit goofy, but it's an interestng interpretation of the old fantasy tropes.

And, ya know, Blade Runner.  You get all the endings?

You don't have any DoD:S achievements! Have you not played since the Palermo update or what?

I've got to agree with Far Cry 2 being on the list.

Loved brother hood of steel, one of my favorite games as well. dont feel like looking up if it was made by the same people as baldurs gate, but I seem to remember at least someone may have been involved, anyway loved it.

I still have the temple of elemental evil laying around in a shoe box i think, I picked it up while i was in the navy, so i didnt have tons of time for a game that bored me right out of the blocks, maybe I should try and find that and give it another try.

edit: btw I loved the first neverwinter nights, played that entire game as a spell caster and totally loved it, maybe it just crazy though. Never did pick up any of the expansion packs or the second one.

I agree completely with Max Payne 2 being on this list.  I never understood what the problem could have been, it took everything good about Max Payne and made it alot better.  Also and most importantly, the PC box art and packaging was spectacular for the time and is still one of my faves.

Totally agree with Max Payne II, Blade Runner and Stalker.  I was wondering why Clive Barker's Undying wasn't on there?

Quake 2 probably had the strongest single player of the series. But for me, Quake World and Quake 3's multiplayer dumped all over Quake 2's, I much prefer the faster paced crazyness.

I really enjoyed Far Cry 2, but it took me months of playing it on and off to really get hooked into it.

Stalker's an excellent game, I'd be tempted to say it's superior to Fallout 3 in many ways. I'd like to try Fallout tactics and Neverwinter Nights 2 now that I've seen them here, they've always been a couple of games I've been tempted by.

I appreciate your Far Cry 2 love; I was one of the few others who really had a good time with that one. Day of Defeat: Source is also an amazing title and arguably more balanced than TF2. It's is also a hell of a lot of fun.

I'm with you on Far Cry 2 dude, I loved the hell out of that game until some weird bug in it caused my save to fuck up and I was about 2/3 in so starting again from the beginning just seemed like too much work. I still enjoyed it however, and I don't honestly understand the amount of shit it gets.

Yeah man, Far Cry 2 is definitely underrated as is Silent Storm. I remember my roomate introducing me to Silent Storm not too long ago. I ran in to a glitch that prevented me from loading my save and I stopped playing it, but it was such an awesome game.

Yeah, I think Max Payne 2 is way better than the first.  Also, Far Cry 2 and Quake II are great as well.  I own all 3 of these games.

Stalker is one of my favorite games of all time, and a big reason for why I'm anticipating (and dreading) the release of Metro 2033.

Aw, man. Someone else that appreciates some good Anarchy Online. That game stole a few good months of my life. Most in-depth and satisfyingly-customizable MMO out there. It's all about the jump height.

Right there with you on Far Cry 2. The game had some weak parts, but the gunplay was awesome and there was a real sense of danger; will I be able to get through this fight? Is my gun in good shape? Have I got enough malaria meds, and how do I get to where I'm going efficiently without stirring up tons of shit?

Lots of games load you up with ease of use options, and that's a valid way to go, but you lose a sense of threat. In that FC2 is kind of similar to Dead Rising.

Definitely with you on STALKER. Especially with Oblivion Lost or LURK mods.

Have you ever played Silver or Urban Chaos?
In my opinion Silver was a beautiful looking RPG that was completely underrated. Though some of its more or less innovative concepts were partially flawed it was still a game worth playing.
Urban Chaos got some decent reviews, however it never seemed to have reached a lot of people. In my opinion it was GTA3 before there was GTA3.
And I totally agree with you on all the games I know on your list, especially Fahrenheit and Blade Runner.

Far Cry 2 didn't take with me when I've played it in the past, but I picked it up a few days ago on the Steam Summer Sale and I think I'm really getting into it this time.

You're tempting me to try out S.T.A.L.K.E.R. now.

Good job mentioning Far Cry 2; I played through that one three times over on all the difficulties (except the easiest; nobody plays Easy Mode) and I enjoyed it each time.

The inclusion of Max Payne 2 and additional commentary makes this list that much more legit.

Odd, I've played and liked (at least around their release) most of them.
The only one I haven't actually played at all is DoD: Source since I don't much like MP shooters.

Silent Storm definitely needs a remake without the stupid power armors. That game was near
perfect turn based strategy.

Absolutely agree with Blade Runner, a real lost treasure, and a genuinely unique take on point and click games, and lets face it one of the best uses of a movie license around. That said, I have'nt played it in a very long time, wonder how it holds up.

Such a great list of gems. As said earlier Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite games and deserved so much more praise when it came out. It holds up quite nicely even today. Still like to play trough it almost every year :)

I'm thrilled others share my fond, fond memories of the Blade Runner game, the first game my family ever had for the PC (my dad actually bought it). I actually played it before I'd seen the movie or read the book, it was my entry point into the world of Philip K Dick who I'd now regard as my favourite author. Even without knowing the source material I quickly got deeply absorbed in the story, thanks in no short part to the marvellous atmosphere of it all.
