This article/comment section is now a candidate for the 'Hottest Mess of the year'.

It's weird how few video game protagonists have a character arc of any kind. It's often the main character's friends or enemies that change through the course of a game, but rarely the protagonist itself. As you said, it's often a result of them starting as some sort of altruistic hero-type so there's really no place to go (but downhill, like the Spec Ops lead).

@mento:Is the XCX soundtrack produced by Charli-XCX? Real missed opportunity. Last time a British pop icon appeared in a JRPG (Leona Lewis FF13), things turned out so well.

@mento: Well, the Necrodancer soundtrack as a whole is pretty solid. But yeah, it's not as exciting as Disco Descent. They also love Danny B's musical style so it might just win.

You're right that GB's 'Best Music' award is in reality the 'Most memorable track of the year' award. Last year, I thought Transistor was easily the most consistently good soundtrack with many highlights but it wasn't enough to beat Luftrausers's one track.

My memory is a bit hazy but is the David Wise thing related to whole Donkey Kong fiasco, where someone played a track from youtube to convince the rest?

Thanks for the list. It gives me a lot more game music to explore.

I haven't played Undertale yet, but that track is very reminiscent of older JRPGs from the SNES era, without the 8/16-bit effect. It's very simplistic, so they probably had to come up with great melodies - it has me intrigued and also makes me feel nostalgic. My personal favorite track of the year is Disco Descent both with and w/o Shopkeeper vocals. Sadly, the rest of the album is not as stellar.

@ben_h: That's exciting to hear. If they follow up with Grid 2 level of DLC, this might be the definite rally game for a few years at least. Are Finland and Sweden already in there? The snow stages always feel so chaotic and fun. And Finland has some of the biggest jumps I can remember.

BTW that Polo car in dark blue really catches the eye. Those wheel arches make it look like a DTM (or maybe it's just a VW trademark look).

Pillars sounds like the game made for you! I got it in a recent steam sale but it's so daunting (time wise) to get started. Looks like you're in the same boat with Witcher 3 ?

@ben_h: I thought they were still adding a lot of content, like classic cars and stage layouts. Didn't they add the C4 and Ford RS only recently?

Is the game actually finished or will Codie continue to add cars and stages as DLC later on? Unlike the previous Dirt and McRae games, this one seems more sim like and as a result, I half-expect them to treat it like a base platform for future add-ons. A bit like rFactor or iRacing.
