Game Designers Who "Get It"

Alphabetical order:

List items

  • Making a stupid game that's actually fun to play can't be an easy task, but with games like Twisted Metal and God of War, David Jaffe has done just that. His games usually play like you would expect a heavy metal album cover would, and it also helps that Jaffe has a brash, balls-to-the-wall, outspoken attitude to go with it.

  • Thief, System Shock 2, Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite. Ken Levine has made his mark as a designer who likes to take a known gaming convention and turn it sideways. If you like your games with a large dose of existentialism, Mr. Levine's your kind of game designer.

  • Hideo Kojima is a man with a vision; Mr. Metal Gear. He has the oddest and quirkiest games designs on the planet, with a single-minded focus to see those designs made real. Those designs might be wrapped within a 30 minute cutscene or a gameplay mechanic as obtuse as pounding the X button for an excruciatingly long time, but he's a man who often spits in the face of conventional game expectations. Some hate, some love him, I respect him.

  • ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and (hopefully) The Last Guardian. Fumito Ueda has, closer than anyone has until this point, injected something into gaming that has eluded the industry for a long time, real emotion. There are super strong moments within both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus that a lot of games either can't, or won't, go after. If you liked the fantastic elements of a game like 'Journey', you need to thank Ueda for laying the groundwork.
