I agree with your criticisms but I'm generally willing to let that shit go because hey it's a movie I'm willing to be entertained by it on its own terms. My only big gripes are the fact that they changed an Indian-American character, Venkat Kapoor, to a "half-Indian" but basically African-American character, Vincent Kapoor, and Mindy Park inexplicably went from being Korean-American to being some white lady.
If they could have squeezed anything else in from the books I would have liked to see Kate Mara explain Johanssen's "survival plan", but of course that would be way too fucked up for a mainstream film. Also yeah fuck that Iron Man shit that was garbaaaaaaaage.
Honestly this is one of my favorite things about the game. It always gives you the information you need to get to where you're going, but always presents it within the context of the world. One sequence comes to mind where you listen to a log that tells you exactly what to do and a map that shows you exactly where to do it, but because it's just a passing comment and there is no big blinky dot on the map, every LPer I've seen just wanders around for 30+ minutes with no idea.
The game really wants you to engage with the world and inhabit it, so I'd recommend trying to do so. Of course, if it's really getting in the way of your ability to enjoy this game, just use a walk through or something. There's no shame in that. I used one a couple times because I can't handle scary stuff and sometimes it just got too intense for me to play without some sort of guidance.
Yo, high-level Pokemon is fucking complex spreadsheet madness.
That said, as a devout evangelist of Suikoden 1&2, I'm pretty much right on board with all of your thoughts. Of course, because the way I play games means I am focused on keeping all playable characters at around the equivalent level, I often had to wrangle with extremely sub-optimal parties which kept combat pretty challenging throughout.
I really appreciated your bit about Silverberg. Unlike most games, the protag in (the good) Suikoden games is really just a cog in a a significantly larger world-changing machine, and Silverberg really exemplifies that. I'm really excited to hear your thoughts about Suikoden 2 because that game is amaaaaaaaaaaazing. The strategists in Suikoden games made me want to write a story where the strategist is the main character. Strategists are the best!
Also yeah, Pahn can totally beat Teo if you've been keeping him decently leveled and geared. And that opens up the possibility of reviving Gremio seriously how did you beat the game without reviving Gremio ahhhhhh!!!!!
@hassun: K, I wasn't sure if she just didn't know or was having trouble accessing the knowledge in the moment. Seems like she's decided just to not talk nearly as much now.
