Collectibles, writing and a Dead Island.

"Holy shit, leave me alone!" I shout hard enough to be heard across the street.

The man is unrelenting however and keeps moving forward, his eyes are filled with lust and madness.
"Shitshitshit" I mumble as I look around me for a means of escape.
Meanwhile, he growls and snarls at me as he makes his way towards me.
Looking back to him I can barely move in time to dodge the lead pipe he threw towards me and I bash into the wall.
"Pro tip: Don't walk into alleyways!" I curse towards myself as I see no other option but to fight.
The man seems to smile with whatever teeth he has left and then he lunges forward.
"Fuck off" I shout as I sidestep again and punch him on the back of his head as his momentum carries him past me.
I quickly grab the pipe he threw earlier from the ground and as he tries to rise from the floor I hit him.
The pipe makes contact and I feel his skull caving in.
He collapses with a sick gurgle and I pant to catch my breath, trying to wipe my hands on my jeans in an effort to wash away all the blood.
Futile, now my pants are as red as my hair and what good is fashion in a zombie infested world?
"Take a trip Tali, you look exhausted Tali, get away from all this nonsense Tali! That's what they told me so I did. But look at me now, in some half forgotten city fighting hordes of the fucking undead!"
My thoughts are disrupted when a pair of shrieks and cries are heard not far away, alerting me to the incoming presence of more zombies.
Infected, to be precise, and I take my stance right on time as the two mad men cut the corner and start dashing towards me.
As they walk into the pipe with dedication I absently wonder if I could make a profession out of this.

This is why I avoid alleys, usually.
This is why I avoid alleys, usually.
Then, I realize my time is up.
A low pitched growl echoes and another zombie appears at the edge of the alleyway.
He's big, like wouldn't fit in your door big, and he seems to be pretty angry.
But by all accounts he's a zombie, so probably bitten which sucks in the first place and to top things off he was either into some kinky shit or he escaped from the looney bin because I don't remember straightjackets being that common on tropical islands.
The big brute has had enough of my mind he decides and starts running towards me, with more precision than his previous comrades and probably four times the power so I quickly look for an exit.
No door has magically appeared in the wall of the alley but I spot a dumpster and I call the operator for a quick lesson on parkour, Matrix style!
Actually I don't and I just start to sprint as hard as I can towards it, climbing the metal object with the grace of a retarded monkey.
But, I'm alive still and on top (just how I like it!).
The zombie ran into the dumpster and is now surely a mental patient after that impact, his lust for blood only increasing from the impact and the fact he's not able to reach me probably makes him all the more pissed off.
Like most men it seems he doesn't like being bottom so I taunt faith and walk to the edge of the container.
I look down and place my heel between his eyes, he stumbles backwards and positively flips the fuck out.
Good, I'm satisfied with that, so I turn and climb the wall of the alleyway towards a rickety looking road of wooden planks and rusted metal walkways, sounds of madness diminishing as I leave the dreaded alley behind me.
See those rickety walkways up there? Totally safe right?
See those rickety walkways up there? Totally safe right?
I walk for a bit on the unstable makeshift high roads, trying to make myself believe I played enough Mirror's Edge to pull this off, and end up at a roof overlooking a small sidestreet.
I hear faint gurgles and cries so I quickly duck away and grab a big brick, ready to defend myself.
My horror quickly turns to laughter however as I see a zombie climb up the roof with even less grace than me climbing a dumpster.
He succeeds eventually and takes his first shambling steps towards me.
A thud is heard and teeth shatter in his mouth when I throw the brick at his face.
The weight of the stone versus the natural unbalance of a zombie makes for a spectacle as he backflips of the roof, disappearing into the nothingness he came from.
It's not the sunny ideal vacation I paid for but hell, I could get used to this.
But yeah, that's getting ahead of myself a little bit.
Someone wanted me to check out a water pump station and I've promised some people in a church I'd look for supplies, so I'll have to survive that first.
A glint catches my eye however and I turn to find a metallic chest staring at me (yes, chests have eyes now!), alluring me with the promise of hidden goodies.
I open the thing and find a pretty new shiny axe waiting for me.
Bingo!
I grab it with a grin and take a leap of the roof, nearly breaking my ankles and almost murdering myself by falling on the axe.
More gurgles and shouts are heard not far away and I clench the axe firmly in one hand.
This might not be what I expected it to be when I booked the trip but if there's one remedy for hating humankind its taking out a zombie apocalypse.

For now at least, I get bored so easily!

Each of these roofs could hold a collectible. And probably will.
Each of these roofs could hold a collectible. And probably will.
On a non zombie note did I tell you how much I hate time sinks with terrible rewards?
I don't mind collectibles but unless they're done in the style of The Darkness (one or two per level, hidden but not completely invisible or unreachable) or they at least offer you something for your time.
I fail to see the fun in collecting Assassin's Creed 1/2's flags/feathers, the rewards barely worth the time and more than likely the collectibles will be the last thing you do in a game anyway.
This same thing happened to me when I finished Darksiders 2 earlier today, noticing I missed around 30 stones and 10 relics.
Now that's not a huge number and I'm sure I could get them in a day but there's the point.
Am I going to sit in my room for a day, guide in hand, scavenging through every dungeon/nook/cranny again to check if I have collected this particular item?
I wish the game would somehow mark them on your map when collected or perhaps even allow you to buy a collectible radar on your second playthrough for like a million coins because I see no reason to walk through all of this again.
That's not to say it can't be fun and that there's people out there who don't like doing this kind of stuff but I've enough games to play and I don't feel that strongly about another 10-50G on my gamerscore.
The silly part is that I absolutely love MMO's and have leveled my fair share of characters, classes and crafting professions through the years.
Sometimes it just needs the right dressing I guess?
Props to the people who do 100% their games however, I only do it for the games I adore and if they offer me enough incentive too.
So I'll be stuck with two s-ranks forever (ME1 and ME2, ME3's ending burned all will to do my insanity playthrough) but that's life for ya.
Become an adventurer, meet interesting people and fascinating beasts, then kill them for loot.
Become an adventurer, meet interesting people and fascinating beasts, then kill them for loot.
So, Guild Wars 2.
I played the beta and was surprised by the smooth combat and fantastic world, not to mention the fun classes and skills that change per weapons!
I still think the Charr look like retarded hunchbacked Tauren but ah well.
Upon sorting through my wallet and finding 25 cent, 12 receipts for all kinds of stuff and a whole load of dust I came across two coupons for my local game store worth a whopping 46 and 26 euro's!
Alright that's 72 euro's combined and since I had nothing to buy with it I decided to  pre-order Guild Wars 2 and also get a present for my little brother's upcoming birthday.
I'm sure he'll appreciate Fallout New Vegas since he's literally not stopped playing Fallout 3 since it came out and I'll be losing a lot of time that could (should) be spend writing but alas.
Looking forward to playing a MMO that doesn't want me to pay per month while still offering a experience and options for me to enjoy from start to finish.
At least that's what the forums and the information tells me, if that all turns out to be true is for a later blog.
Not sure about the level scaling when you run around lower areas or how limited my bank space is going to be but we'll see.
I'm sure I can find 54 euro's of entertainment by just leveling a few characters and classes with this smooth combat system.
And I can log in whenever I want instead of paying monthly and feeling like I'm missing out/could have been grinding/instancing/all the other things that make MMO's so fun yet so time consuming!

Writing sucks, did you guys know? Because it does.
Sure its fucking ecstatic when you are writing your stories and sometimes you feel as if you just won a race or something upon completing a story or a particular scene but man does it ever suck the life out of you at times!
I'm currently working on the last few chapters of a novel and I'm feeling terrorized by it every time I try to tackle it.
To give you a basic rundown I'm currently in a situation where 4 major players collide, revelations all around as secrets get spilled and patterns recognized but the kicker here is that not all 4 players like each other and there's a lot of things going on at the same time.
Player 1 is working with P2 to get P3 but P2 has a hidden agenda which P1 and P3 know nothing off but oh dear here comes P4 out of the blue (not really, but kinda) and P2's on the verge of reflex murdering P4 so P1 has to prevent that while also keeping an eye on P3 because P3 has stuff she needs...or something.
Fuck! See? Things happening everywhere and while I got the situation, motives and story down writing the scene itself is a challenge!
I like it a lot however and I'm enjoying the despair it gives me, it's like the writer's version of a dungeon boss.
I'll get it down eventually, hopefully tomorrow before Guild Wars 2 launches Tuesday, so I can take a breather and edit/rewrite it later.

That's it for now, thanks for reading (again)!
Time to close off with something deep and artsy.

I just use collectibles in games as an excuse to throw on a bombcast and just chill. If you don't over stress about it finding collectibles can actually be rewarding in games. The trick is never to focus on the game too much. Just let the dulcet tones of Vinny Caravella take you away to a land.

@Chop: Not really... I was unemployeed for the first few months this year as I got laid off and had tons of time. I found my self bored to death. Granted that gave me the time I needed to completly demolish every piece of content in FFXIII-2 which was cool but still... ugh... bored.

@Demoskinos: I can't, really.
Its either full attention or not at all, I do it for the immersion!

@Video_Game_King: You should get a medal for that, seriously.
Its a achievement for sure. Or a sickness.

@Chop: I laughed at that, its terrible what we sometimes do in the moment right? I still have mixed feelings of proudness and shame about my mount collection in World of Warcraft.
Or the fact I finished Mass Effect 1 26 times.
And I wasn't even jobless back then, just insane-ier.

I'm siding with sickness. It doesn't help that I type out all that formatting when I could probably save it somewhere and load it up each time I write a blog.

@Demoskinos: Yep, I can totally get that. I used to read books inbetween instancing in World of Warcraft back when you had to set up groups without the help of the instance finder and had to walk there.
I do admit to listening a sickening amount of music while playing WoW however, but it often got me way to hyper to keep playing, the slow combat not living up to my power metal.
Pvp fixed that a little, but not enough.

@TaliciaDragonsong: I never really liked Dead Island, the combat felt off and the structure was extremely repetitive for me, to the point where it felt like a single player MMO(Yeah, i played on single player.). Speaking about MMO's, does Guild Wars 2 lives up to it's promise? It's the first MMO i'm interested since ever. If the combat is fun, the world feels alive and the community is great, i may give it a go, i hope you write more about it.
And finally, you write really well, so i'm curious about your novel.

Given that this game is chronologically sandwiched between Borderlands and Xenoblade Chronicles, we may be on the verge of a single player MMO renaissance. In fact, I'm calling it now: after modern military FPSes fade out, single player MMOs will be the new trend. SO SAYETH THE KING.

Fine. I could use the practice, and you've no clue what you're messing with.

I'll bring the RISK board, you better prepare yourself.

Perhaps one day you could collect all your blogs and print them.

The book shall be called "Vague Video Game Ramblings and Videos about Hatsune Miku", since that's probably the best way to describe my blogs.

Works for me!

@Barrock: That's why I'm not bothering, I like it how it is now :P

@MikeGosot: I've no clue, I'll tell you when I get it tuesday.
Only the very early pre orders got this early access stuff that's been happening, meaning not me, my 54 euro's aren't as valuable it seems.
I like the city part of Dead Island best, zombies never seem to stop spawning there and I find myself chased across roofs, through alleys and just about anywhere.
There's something to be said for the annoying back and forth questing though, but I won't say it, got enough to do and bashing heads is fun for now.

Also, did my topic just birth a new genre? Great.
I got a little scared when it said 16 replies to your blog but it was just you two mostly.

@TaliciaDragonsong: I never got to the city. I remember the game making me frustrated and bored at some point, and i listened to the Catherine OST while playing, but even that didn't hold my attention for too long. Please tell me about Guild Wars 2 when you have the opportunity... And make a redhead Norn that turns into a Bear at some point.
And i'm seriously thinking about researching about "MSOs" to see if they're really a thing.

I made up the name, but I suspect that it's an actual trend. Phantasy Star Online had a single player mode, and there was that SMT MMO for the Xbox that ended up being a single player action RPG thing nobody really cares about.

@Video_Game_King: Do you? Now I'm all itchy for some PSO though, time to connect my Gamecube again.

@MikeGosot: Sorry to disappoint but I was going for the Wolf totem, not Bear!
I really liked the beginning of Dead Island but it got old fast...quests everywhere, no real pattern in them and they send you all over the island...it felt very much like a MMO at one point where it wants you to go to a very fucking far place on the map...doing that reminded me of MMO's and I nearly quit.
But the city is fun, worth the price I paid for it alone! xD

I'm just jealous you all are writing this much of anything.

The largest text output I've had lately has been writing contracts and emails, my fiction and blogging has been suffered badly.

@TaliciaDragonsong: I've actually never played an MMO in my life, don't like the idea of making monthly payments for a game....and I hate grinding, which is also why I'm not a big fan of RPG games....so i tend to pick games that won't require a ton of grinding to 100%

@Tim_the_Corsair: Ride the wave mr Corsair, write down even the tiniest idea and it might blossom into something beautiful!
Or just play videogames, drop the controller in shock when you realize you're having a moment of inspiration in the middle of being eaten by zombies and rush over to your computer to type it all down (and continue like nothing happened after).
One of my motto's (I have too many) is: Write write write!
It's all practice.

@Guided_By_Tigers: That might be for the best then, those games can break your spirit, trust me! :P
At some point in time you will have to realize you can't watch every movie, read every book or play every game.
But we sure as hell gotta try to spend times with the things we love doing.

@TaliciaDragonsong I'm hoping the release of the anthology with my first publish in it will spark the creative juices again, as waiting for that thing to come out (and the subsequent critical and commercial reaction) is giving me a real Sword of Damocles vibe these last couple of months.

I've gotten past the block for my next publish as well, which is good, but haven't written anything..."new"... In ages, despite rolling in ideas. Tis the problem with trying to do this as work, I guess.

Cheers for the advice, though; I must admit that I chuckled a little at it, considering its the exact same that I often give to others :P if nothing else, you just made me realise that I'm in here whining like every other writer ever is wont to do.

By the way, I have heaps of mottos too, such as: "never edit a chapter more than once when writing new material", "let the rivers run red with the blood of my enemies, "KILL! MAIM! BURN", and "never drop your pants at a primary school, regardless of whether you have a good reason (such as a deadly Redback spider crawling up your pants leg)"

If i liked the combat more, i would give it a try again. Also, i don't think you understand how awesome Bears are. They're Bears. THAT'S how awesome they are. But damn, i got close to guessing, huh? I think the reason for that is... That's basically what my character is going to look like if end up playing the game(Except for the hair color).
Also, have you played APB? I had more fun with the editor of that thing than with the rest of that shit.

I'm amazed at the amount of writers on there seems to be on this site. That is honestly something I've never ever wanted to do , so it's interesting to encounter so many writers and aspiring writers.

You guys have my respect, I'm far too lazy to do what you do. Plus when I have done so I tend to agonize over every word, it's not uncommon for me to proofread even a blog of mine 4 times before publishing it. So I don't envy your passion.

Once again you wrote something awesome. You made me want to play Dead Island which seemed unimaginable a mere hour ago. I am beyond sick of Zombies, imo they have more overused than even Ninjas were in the 90's. You've got a great Gonzo fictional journalism vibe going in the first part of this piece. The use of the word "lust" was a particularly artful misdirect after your last open. You're good at playing with your readers' expectations. That's a very good thing imo.

As for the endless pursuit of shinies (aka collectibles). I'm not sure I "enjoy" it, but I can't help myself. the completionist in me is compelled to at least attempt it everytime. I absolutely agree though the reward is almost always not worth the time investment. FWIWI used to have an occupation that actually required me to do something similar in real life. If you think not having fast travel in games is bad, try hoofing it on your own feet for 10 hours a day. At least I got paid for that.

As for getting your writing done b4 GW2 launches- Wow not setting the bar too high I hope? That sounds really tough to do in that window, especially if you have a 9-5 job....

Well Best of luck!

@Tim_the_Corsair: I know that feeling but its important nonetheless to just write, even if its a few sentences!
I started writing with the idea I want to write novels but now I write everyday...and all sorts of things!

My writing partner tells me to shut up and stop worrying and just write like 3 times per day...funny how we always know these things but never listen to it ourselves right?

@MikeGosot: Sorry, I don't dislike bears but we never seem to get along. Wolves are just bad ass.
I've tried APB for a bit, creator was fun but the game was terrible so I didn't spend that much time with it sadly.
From the beta I know I'll have a lot of fun with GW2's char editor however, I'm a sucker for those!

@Slag: I've had that Dead Island story from the same day I wrote my 'rant' but I felt so insecure about it I deleted it.
Then later I recovered it from the garbage bin and here it is! xD
Zombies are alright, but them being main stage is a time gone by, its usually the big zomboss behind them or the story around it that's more interesting.
Thanks though, good to see you picked up on my redirection!

The line has to be drawn when games get turned into work.
I don't mind working for something but its terrible when you find yourself calculating a schedule so you can grind enough reputation so you can...fly another colour dragon? Bah, not worth it anymore.
Collectibles are fun but missing the load of em and having to backtrack through the entire game sucks.
Wish there was more ingame incentive to do these things as well, Metroid Prime basically told you to scan the shit out of everything but you did so for story as well as 100%, only missing a few things probably in tense combat situations.
I don't mind not having fast travel but areas need to be saturated.
Having to walk like 10 minutes straight (that's skipping zombies) from one quest hub to a a (1, just 1) quest's location is very unrewarding...especially when the quest sends you to another far away place...and back.

I've actually put down some notes for my GW2 blog, like "what do I expect right now, and did this turn out to be true after playing it?" and with any luck I'll get a basic draft of the novel's ending out today.
*Looks at laundry, empty fridge and hungry housemates* If I can find time inbetween house chores that is.

@Hizang: Any reason to do that in Sleeping Dogs? I never bothered in Saint's Row 2 because there was no real incentive, Saint's 3 did it better with giving you more info about how and what. It didn't take eons to collect it either.

There are those Lockbox's and those shrines and those statues to be on the lookout for, not just collectables but there are quite a few distractions in that game.

I like it when games just go ahead and tell you where all the collectibles are in the game itself. I think GTA IV did that, and I know Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Saints Row the Third did. I still rarely collect everything though, because it's just not fun to me. Only game I did that for was Brohood. I collected crap and listened to music during the commercials when watching football games. (Oh, and Banjo Kazooie, but that was because my niece and nephew kept visiting and wanting to play the game so eventually between the three of us we'd picked up almost everything and I just decided to finish it off and get the S-rank. It was my first S-rank)

I very much intend to go back and get the final 2 achievements in Mass Effect 2 though (Insanity run and Shadow Broker on hardcore are all that I have left). And I keep considering getting the final Mass Effect achievements, although getting one of my level 51 characters up to level 60 would require maybe 3 more playthroughs, no? That's the one that's keeping me from attempting it.

And writing is evil. I hate it almost as much as it seems to hate me. Grrr.

I tend to only want to write words if I think there's an audience. It's not like music where the act of playing or listening to composition has the same intrinsic rewards. Well, maybe that's more a personal thing. Writing words is fun because there's far more power and control than you get with music.

@Hizang: I don't got the game but I'll believe ya! Happy hunting!

@pyromagnestir: It certainly helps to have a tracker or radar of sorts, some games are just too big or longwinded to run through again.
Even with music or tv.
Mass Effect's great though since it allows you to import your character, that helps a lot! And its entirely possible to finish achievements in only two playthroughs, which happens a lot anyway due to the choices.

@Brodehouse: There's always an audience however, you just need to find them!
I find writing to be insanely rewarding in itself, if its later read and loved as well that's just bonus and extra incentive to do it again, but generally I really love the act itself as well.
I once wrote a piece on that, but in Dutch so I can't put it here because translating is effort, that writing is a journey for me, a trip through my own wonderlond!

Once again, a nice write-up. I wish I had more constructive things to say about Dead Island or Guild Wars 2, but I don't; I simply found the combat in Dead Island unsatisfying, so the rest of the package fell apart. As for GW2, I have done zero follow-up, though I'm glad people seem to agree that it's pretty damned good.

@TaliciaDragonsong: So in Mass Effect can I make it from level 51 to 60 in one play through? It would be an insanity run as well, I guess, since I'd need to do that anyway and I'm under the impression that on insanity you get more experience. When I tried to find that out on the internet it sounded like most people were saying it takes 2+ play throughs to make it from 50 to 60, and that's why I decided not to do it. Seems you'd know, having played through the game 26? (god damn!) times and all.
