I think Blacklist is supremely entertaining. It has great single player and the co op is also great fun. There is a ton of content here.

@brewmaster_andy: It doesn't sound like you NEED to play it for Dark Souls II, but I think it would help to get your mind around the way the combat works and just the general feel of the game.

If you can turn to human at the Lower Blighttown bonfire, you will be invaded by Maneater Mildred and she is easy to take out. She will then be summonable right before you go into fight Quelaag. She is a helpful distraction and can do some extra damage as well.
