@Dookysharpgun: I may have purchased both. In my defense, I'm pretty sure there was also a sweet Fei Long costume in that Able pack. That was my reason for getting it. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

I was thinking about Skyrim at work the other day, as I often do, and it occurred to me that it's pretty remarkable that they've fit that game on one disc. Mass Effect 2 came on multiple discs as have other games like Blue Dragon (yawn) etc, so I'm wondering, did they use magic?
I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the technical aspects of game development, but does anybody smarter then me actually know the reason why a massive game like Skyrim is one disc while others don't seem to fit? If nobody else knows I'm gonna assume it's magic.

@Dookysharpgun: Yeah i get what you're saying for sure. I just think pubs and devs are trying to do their best to come up with a business model that really works while trying to cut the used sales as much as possible. They say online pass is for server upkeep etc, and while I'm sure money goes towards that, we all know its to try to cut the legs out of Gamestop, they should just come out and say it.
I buy 99% of my games new cause I wanna support the devs and if I did buy used I wouldn't have a problem with the extra $10 to get online. I think DLC is getting a lot better, I do my best to just try to buy the stuff that's good (although to be honest I'm guilty of the occasional stupid purchase ie. Street Fighter costumes...sigh). That's really all I can do.

I don't buy used games. I don't like the fact that they have been opened before by someone other than me.

I'll go with this, plus, I want to support developers and buying new games are more and effective way to do just that.

Both of these, especially the second. I really wanna support developers. Gamestop not so much.

SILENCE CHILDREN, this is the deal. You come to me, give me your money. In return I will teach you diciplin and how to abandon your materialism that makes you feel so depressed. Basically I'm going to turn you into a buddhist monk. You have to give me everything you own even you clothes, because in order to abandon materialism you TRULY need to abandon it. After that I will show you where to find the best mushrooms and how to smoke them....deal?

I gotta say this is the most round-about way someones ever taken to try to get me naked. You could have just asked.

I think the SOPA issue is more worrying then the other stuff. It could have some pretty unfortunate ramifications if it goes through. My opinion on the other stuff you mentioned is kinda a meh. I don't like a lot of it but it's kinda the nature of the industry right now. Everyone's still trying to figure this stuff out and the only way stuff like online passes and shady DLC practices will change is if people vote with their wallet.

I'd say the bigger problem with it was it was undersold. When you go up against a Rockstar game you're in trouble. People apparently enjoyed Red Dead. I loved the crap outta Alan Wake, I'd totally be up for more.

It's a 2D sidescroller with a 60 dollar sticker price going up against the biggest titles of the year. No shit it flopped.

Funny how you could've said the same thing about New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Donkey Kong Country Returns, both of which sold incredibly well.

Of course, the major difference is that Nintendo advertised those games and Ubisoft couldn't've been bothered with Rayman.

You can't really compare those, you're talking huge brand awareness and release on a console hurting for games. I can't remember when they were released but I doubt it was nearly as bad as Raymans release date. Ubisoft sent this out to die and that's really sad.

Of course you can compare them. They were released at the exact same time as Rayman Origins (albeit with the usual Nintendo Sunday release date) and while there's way more brand awareness for Mario and Donkey Kong (though consider that it had been 14 years between DKC3 and DKCR, and that Jungle Beat, the last Donkey Kong platformer, didn't do particularly well), Rayman has done well over the years between Rayman 2 and the Rabbids games. Also, this is a game that was released on all consoles--including the Wii.

I'm not saying Rayman hasn't had some popularity but Mario games are in another class. Everybody knows who Mario is, I guarantee the majority of the mass market don't know who Rayman is apart from maybe seeing him in the Rabbids games. Those two franchises aren't comparable when it comes to mass market brand awareness and appeal. Do you really think Rayman is a big franchise in Japan, anywhere near what Mario is?
Yes they're comparable when it comes to genre, they're both platformers, but that's pretty much it.

EDIT: Did some quick googling, SMBWii sold over 900, 000 units in japan in its first four days alone. There's no comparison between that franchise and Rayman.
