Finally. A high-profile game critic offers a scathing review of a Kojima game. Most of this review could be applied to any Kojima game since Metal Gear Solid 2. I've felt like I was taking crazy pills for decades. Finally... Someone sees his work for what it is: A big blustery mess.
Personally I love this game's combination of survival and stealth. It feels truly tense and oppressive for a long time, but eventually I started to feel at home. Remarkably, as soon as I got comfortable, everything changed and it was super-tense again, but as it turned out the game was nearly over at that point...
What I'm getting at is, I just wish there was more of it. More ruins, more horrible jungle full of spiders, anything.
Considering there's a whole tier of upgrades not obtainable yet, there must be something coming, but for now there's not really anything left for me to do.
Edit: Mind you, this is after 40+ hours of playing.
Agree. I'm continuing to enjoy it after about 40 hours of play time. The coop is fun. The events have been decent. Hoping for more in the future, but I got my $40 out of it. I completely understand why this game would turn a lot of people off, but it's going to hook some folks. Count me in.
I've never cared for the Metal Gear Solid series. Kojima is the most over-rated "auteur" in the game industry.
Loved Platinum's take with Revengeance and the Metal Gear Acid! games. This one is appealing to me too. I'm enjoying it after a handful of hours, but I do like the survival genre. It takes WAY TOO LONG to get to where the game gets legs and becomes more interesting, but after making it there it's a good ride. The loop of gathering stuff, crafting stuff, and then building on to your base is compelling. Forget about the Metal Gear prefix and it's fun.
Agreed. There must be a name for the psychological effect of not picking the obvious winner. It happens all the time. "Well... Violet is clearly the best ballerina here, so let's give the award to Susan."
I loved the look of this game and its design goals, so I bought into the Early Access some months ago. There were numerous game breaking bugs at the time. I posted a few messages on the Steam forums and the devs were GREAT. They quickly responded and the issues I reported were fixed in subsequent releases. I was impressed.
