I will say though that I think they deserve some kind of pass here seeing as how Drew stated in the very first episode that these types of games aren't his thing and they just wanted a nice, relaxing breeze thru this game.
I love games like this, but I feel like this game in particular can sometimes be pretty brutal especially for newcomers to the genre. This is just my opinion, but I think they made the right call because otherwise, we'd be getting 2 hour episodes where 1 hour of that is Drew getting fucked up by the bosses, him clearly not having fun anymore, and people yelling at them in the comments.
I hope I'm clear when I say that I have no issue with the how he chose to play. "Ugh, why aren't you equipping X weapon" and that kind of stuff is dumb to get upset about. My point lies in not taking a moment to just get used to the literal mechanics/UI elements of a game, audience be damned. An easy thing to equate it to would be neither Dan nor Brad ever learning the Trespassing mechanic in Hitman. Instead they'd freak out, get killed, and complain about not knowing what to do in that situation.
If Drew wants to button-mash and wail on dudes till they explode, hey, rock on. It's when he gets agitated by the camera or not taking a moment to recognize that "blue" is a sort of key-color for what to do next that I start getting annoyed.
All of this is a moot point anyway, as they complete the game in a whopping 6 episodes and very clearly enjoy their time with it. It's also obvious that they came to this for the story, which is totally cool with me. There are just times when I think GB as a whole tends to get caught up in entertaining us first {a totally justifiable goal, to be sure).
The decision to go Easy coupled with "Eh, parrying isn't important" has ensured that they're getting the least satisfying experience out of this. I hate the "they're playing it wrong" conversation, but actively ignoring entire game mechanics/systems or never considering pausing to look at a Controls menu and find out how to lock-on just means they end up bewildered constantly. Drew's look of confusion every time his Sword Mode isn't in slow-mo/doesn't dismember is a prime example of this.
I love that they played through this, and the commentary is great as ever, but man is it a bummer seeing them miss out on the stuff that would make this a better overall gameplay experience.
Some deep Googling reveals that "Look! The people are like garbage," comes from the anime Castle In The Sky. It's a line spoken by the character Colonel Muska, voiced by Mark Hamill.
So Onlooking Boyfriend's claim is accurate; he could still be an ass, though.
I would be totally ok if this became the only video series on this site. I love DD so much. It's so awesome to get such a wide swath of video game history in a single place, especially with the addition of the guys' personal experience with each game and the people who appear in the behind the scenes/interviews/etc.
