The sad fact is that single player games simply doesnt make sense for Valve anymore. All their success atm is with dota2 and csgo and we have games like destiny, anthem, overwatch and PUBG on the rise as the dominating forces. the big single player games only exist on consoles and its pretty clear that even there, alot of the big devs are eyeing multiplayer as the next big thing (just look at how Mass effect got shafted to make Anthem). Single player games are a flash in the pan and extremely hard to make. MP stays for years and years and build communities, tournaments etc. Its so much more valuable to Valve imo. Team fortress 3/L4D3 are alot more likely than HL3/Portal3 but i wouldnt even count on that.
7/10 being a bad score is total BS was never true in the UK when I grew up in the 90's.
I hear you, but its not the 90s anymore and a 7/10 given in the spirit of the game being mediocre shouldnt then be translated as "good" just because you personally think the scale should work different.
Im not here to defend the scale sliding the way it has. But its the system we got so why not just role with it? We get much more precise (aggregated) evaluation this way.
Having an aggregated score doesnt make any sense when theres no consensus on the "rules".
I've never wanted a company to be bought out more than Valve.
Ever since they launched Steam and DOTA 2. They've rested on their laurels and have consistently dipped in quality. Maybe a new owner would get that company back into shape. Or at the very least a new president. Gabe Newell appears to barely come into work as it is.
You can also look at Valve this way: They are currently running two of the biggest games on steam which attracts large tournaments with huge price pools and communities around them.
Because they are self owned they are one of the last truly independent big devs out there and can actually afford to make decisions for the benefit of the users and not shareholders. Would you feel better about them being owned by Tencent - the large mysterious chienese holding company thats buying up western devs atm ? because i can guarantee you that they dont give a flying **** about the end users. They currently own: Riot, Super Cell, part of Epic and part of activision Blizzard + they run the biggest shooter on the planet that you have never heard about but has 200m chinese users or something to that effect. Who the hell even knows what their long term plan is for those companies?
Valve may not always listen to peoples complaints but when they really screw up, they actually do (payed mods and gambling skins)
Be grateful that Valve doesnt have to "sell out" and that they actually can afford to have a conscience.
I dont think its simply about "hats" but rather the fact that its a lot more satisfying to create an online game that can stay relevant for years as opposed to a tight/short singleplayer experience thats over in a couple of hours. The bar for singleplayer games in terms of production value has also made these games alot more risky and they done generate that much revenue (and it would take atleast 3 years to make which is brutal if you can avoid it.).
I would expect a teamfortress 3 or similar mp game to combat overwatch as their next game if they decide to actually make games again :O
Disney has to stop this. If not, you will see lots of scammers (not fan projects) trying to take advantage of the Star Wars IP.. Sadly that is the world we live in.
