FIFA = Corruption

Now this rant is not much more than a vent of pure frustration; mostly for that wonderfully corrupt association that the world knows as FIFA. Now, some people may assume that this rant came about because of the frustrating World Cup 2022 announcement a few days ago, and you would be correct in assuming this.

You see, the thing is that much of the footballing world already pretty much knows that FIFA is an organisation that is corrupt; proof, I have none, but the rumours and whispers have been circulating for years, and even the BBC released a documentary (that was quite damning) last week, which claimed to show and prove the allegations that have been circulating for years.

The problem is, any time these allegations make an appearance they disappear just as quickly than when they appeared. Even before this week's World Cup announcement, there were rumblings and mumblings in the football world, mainly regarding Qatar and its bid to host the Cup. Now, under normal circumstances, I wouldn't mind a nation from the Middle East hosting the Cup, but the thing is, I am pretty positive (as is the whole football world) that Qatar basically PAID for the privelege to host the 2022 World Cup; seriously, it is quite a joke.

But my anger lays not with Qatar; but with FIFA: an old boy's club that relies on secretive ballots, and seems to be a shadowy organisation. The one thing that angered the Australians, and the Americans and British, was that prior to the announcement the EX Com (executive committee) that votes in the secret ballot (which in itself is a joke: seriously, a secret ballot?) are alleged to have made promises to Australia and Britain in particular, that they were going to vote for those two nations; as it turned out in the end, the USA, Australia, and Britain had a COMBINED TOTAL OF 6 VOTES! A joke if there ever was one; Australia received just ONE vote (according to sources in Zurich) even though they were assured that they would have at least 4 votes from people including Beckenbauer, and Platini.

Now, Platini is somebody I thought would be at least an honourable man, and the fact that these supposedly "assured" vote were given verbally to the Australian delegation, this then leads to the question of whether corruption has taken place. I mean, if these people ALL just happened to vote for Qatar (in a SECRET BALLOT, remember?) then the question really does need to be asked.

I, for one, have an inkling that millions of dollars must have been exchanged somewhere along the line; politics in football is ruining the game, as is the astronomical amounts of dollars being exchanged. I may have a biased opinion, being in Australia and all that jazz, and admittedly, the Australian presentation to the delegates and essentially, the world, was shocking.

Seriously, the presentation video that was shown to FIFA, and the world, was a shallow attempt at a hybrid of marketing and tourism; a bloody Kangaroo being chased by Mad Max who just actually turns out to be Paul Hogan, is such a joke that the whole football community of Australia should be ashamed. In this sense ,Australia seems to be a one trick pony; kangaroos and Crocodile Dundee, that is all we seem to have on offer to the world. Why the Australian Football Federation went for this shallow attempt at presenting Australia as a football loving nation, is beyond my comprehension; the presentation did NOT SELL Australia as a footballing nation, and rather than using footage of football, and great footballing moments, the youth system, and various facts that include that football in Australia is the most widely played sport, with more kids and youths playing the game for clubs (actual players for clubs, not including school soccer) than the native AFL football.

Obviously, the video presentation (directed by Philip Noyce) was a waste of taxpayers money, and the millions of dollars wasted on it would have been better spent on selling the fact that Australia is a sports mad country; seriously, I could have come up with a better presentation than the rubbish that we came up with.
It must be said that the presentation alone would not have mattered, not much at all, especially when the suspected outcome was already set in stone from the very beginning.

* EDIT - there, is that better for your eyes?

Lol, the insanity from the English is hilarious. Grow up, england isn't the best at soccer, and soccer is a world sport.

You guys couldn't even beat us in the world cup!

Just try again in 4 years and love the sport.

Yeah, England isn't the greatest international team for football. Looking at it as someone who does not enjoy the sport, I can tell this. Regardless, much of the hate from the British comes from the fact that it was where the sport was founded, and it has been neglected despite being the birthplace of the sport. If you thought the vuvuzelas were bad in South Africa, wait till you hear the Kalashnikovs in Russia.

Also, a useful abbreviation for you all:

F: From
A: Applicants

I don't believe either of the above statements, but they entertain me greatly.

The whole system is ridiculous. Should be decided by solid numbers, facilities, infrastructure, not by 22 politically biased and corrupt old men.

@KaosAngel I agree they're just butt hurt because its not being hosted in their country who already hosted it in the last 50 years so chances of them getting a green light were almost non existent

Don't see why the English are angry. You've already hosted the World Cup.
The Holland/Belgium bid getting 4 votes in the first round and suddenly only 2 votes in the second round shows that the proces was already set in stone.
Russia was going to get it one way or the other.

<Enter RANT-mode>
Holland has the 2nd  best  national team in the world, is located in one the most reachable parts of Europe and, together with Belgium, has the facilities, the national interest and the economy to support it. Who the hell cares about football in freaking Russia?!

Guess we'll just to win it if we ever want a chance of hosting it.

They feel that they're entitled to everything.  It's hilarious to see them act like this.  Their club teams don't even have the best players from the UK, and most of the players aren't even made up of Brits.  England couldn't even beat us in the world cup and got kicked out in the same spot we did!

Let's be honest here, England is just as good as USA in soccer, and the World Cup proved it.

Just man up and let it go, try again in four years.

With respect, the England bid for 2018 was fantastic, and when people promise to vote for you, and then don't, you're allowed to feel a little angry. As a nation we do not feel entitled to everything, we tried hard to win the 2018 bid, we didn't rest on our laurels. Please don't assume.

Regarding the english football team - we are playing poorly, that is true. Do not read too much into World Cup results, because New Zealand is certainly not as good as Italy. Remember that result?

The way I see it is if FIFA is so corrupt and so terrible at its job. Then why are clubs and nations still supporting and participating in its tournaments?

It's like protesting against a game company but then going out and buying a product they developed/published. Makes no sense to me to complain in the first place if you're not actually going to nut up and do something about it.

The clear choice was Spain and Portugal, and they didn't get it, why the fuck should England of all places host it, or Australia?

I was seriously shocked when the Spain-Portugal bid didn't win. They already have finished stadiums, while Russia still has to build most of them. Hotels and tourism are surely better in Spain-Portugal, and they're both nations that have football as their main sport. The only thing that was against that bid was that Spain had already hosted the World Cup in 1982, but by 2018, it would have been over thirty years since it was hosted there, so I don't think it would have mattered much (Mexico hosted the World Cup twice in 16 years). I agree that choosing Russia over Spain-Portugal was a complete rip-off for the world of football.

As for Qatar, I wouldn't be surprised if the mascot were a camel. I just want to see how they'll manage to deal with the burning-as-hell weather they have.

@Hamz: With all due respect, comparing the FIFA to a game publisher is idiotic.
If you want to compare the FIFA with anything, compare it to.... the ESRB. You are basicly forced to work with them and if you do not, you can't publish your game (inside the US).

If you want to change anything within the Fifa, there are so many people/organisations needed to change even the littlest thing. Combine that with people who benefit from the status-quo working against you and it's impossible.

The FIFA as a concept it excellent, but in practice it can be very sinister.

I don't think the clear choice was Spain and Portugal, but I wouldn't say 'of all places' when talking about their bid. Increadibly bizarre statement. What do you have against England? I personally beleive Australia would've hosted a great World Cup. There's some really crazy anti-english/australian stuff coming out here.

The point of the world cup is to help boom the economy of other countries.  Last I checked, England wasn't having trouble with their economy...hell your tax payers are willing to pay millions for a silly wedding.

Russia needs it because they're not a fully developed country just yet, and the influx of jobs and crap will help them out.

I'm not for Qatar in 2022, as an Arab American there is no god damn way I want the world cup in the middle east as a shit storm will always come out.  America should've won that, as we proved our place in soccer earlier this year, plus it would help with the lesser cities here as we could've hosted it in the north east.

EDIT:  Qatar used blood money to pay for their bid, and that's a fact.

@KaosAngel:  If proving your place with football results gets you these things, Spain (this years winner and Ranked Nr.1) /Portugal or Holland (this years runner up, Ranked nr.2) /Belgium would've gotten it.

Sadly, 90% of the people allowed voting do not care about such trivial matters.

Gerrard? Lampard? Rooney? Cole? Terry? All the best British players play in the UK. The National team has been mediocre for decades but the domestic league has some of the best teams and players in the world. English feel like they should have got the world cup because they have some of the best facilities in the world (Russia plays on plastic pitches ffs,)  good infrastructure, etc, not becuase they're the best in the world.

See!  It's entitlement like that, who cares if Russia plays like that.  If it helps soccer grow into a bigger world sport, then so be it!  The world cup will help their economy grow, and spread a better word of soccer around.

They'll spend money to make it better.

The point of the World Cup is to host a global tournament showcasing the best in international football, not to boost the economy of a country. However, you're right that it seems to be the case post 2006.

And Englands economy, just like most other western ones at the moment, is not fine. For the life of me I don't know why we voted in a government who are making cuts all over the place, but we did. Public spending is down, education fees are going up and we're we're only just out of a recession, which let's not forget all started when American banks went a bit funny. And that's not an Anti American statement, I like the USA, I've been there a few times. Also, we are not paying for the wedding, we're paying for secuirty. Which I don't think we should be, as a matter of fact.

Dude, the OP is Australian...

I'm Scottish, so I definitely don't feel an obligation to defend England, but I will say their team is FAR better than the US team (bar some poor managing and shoddy mis-haps, of course).

Your post reaks of ignorance: No one is really discussing England here, least of all what they're entitled to. The problem lies with FIFA and their decision-making processes.

I'm with Gosu, though: Seeing Holland host the World Cup would be pretty great.

The Russians will build the proper stadium with their money, and they'll get some funding from sponsors and whatnot.  Russia has eight years to do it, and I trust that they won't screw it up.  Hell, Brazil has it in 2014 and that place is a worse hole than Russia (no offense), they'll turn out alright.

It shall be fine, sure the games will be a bit colder, but Russia can totally build five or six stadiums in 8 years.  That's only a stadium a year.

No no I've got nothing against England but bids aside, England has already hosted a world cup (yes ok in 66 but compared to Spain which has never been a host it's a world of difference) whereas Spain and Portugal haven't and Spain being the world champion and all I think it makes more sense.

Who cares if Brazil is a 'hole' as you put it; Brazil's national religion might as well be football, and as such, they will most likely throw the best World Cup party in many years.

And as for all you people that complain about "wall of text", seriously, do you guys complain about the "wall of text" when you read books? Or you don't read books...

And I heard a rumour that one of the reasons that Holland/Belgium didn't get it was that they only have 3 or 4 stadiums that have a capacity seating of 50,000 or more; most World Cup grounds require ALL stadiums to have a minimum of 50,000 capacity. As I said, this was a rumour, and I am not sure if it is entirely true, all I'm saying is that is what I heard. But then again, Russia does have to build them from scratch...

@Tsoglani: The NL/BE bid included the (financially supported) plans to build a new stadium for 80k in Rotterdam (there will be one still, but smaller now that the bid failed), and a bunch of new stadiums in Belgium. The entire point of going to NL/BE was, according to the bid, the fact that so many large stadiums are at a relative stonethrow from eachother.

As for the wall of text complaints, they were well founded. I read lots of books and your original post was still unreadable before the edit. People put spacing in long texts for a reason.

I don't know enough about FIFA to really say what their deal is one way or the other.  I figure that the BBC had a vested interest in having the World Cup in England, so I'd take their documentary with a grain of salt.
