So Final Fantasy XIII Just Killed My PS3...

Hey, have you ever read something really silly and dumb and kinda just wrote it off like no big deal?
Or in this case kinda got really annoyed by it, like let's say, a class-action law-suit against both Sony and Square-Enix because somebody's PS3 froze while playing it.

I mean, that has to be bullshit right? Perhaps you have played, and beaten the game on PS3, and had no problems. I know I've played a bunch of games that apparently spelled death for certain people. I mean, anyone would try to get anything for a buck. Class-action law-suit sounds crazy...

So, I haven't been playing Final Fantasy XIII for a few months, I decided to jump back into the fray and loaded it up a few days ago.

I knew something was weird when the music stopped playing...
Then the battle kinda just...hanged....after I finished a fight without any battle results.
Really freaking strange.

So I reset the machine, and kinda got a bit concerned that the PS3 now couldn't see the Final Fantasy XIII disk.
I stuck in another disk, can't read that either.
I've tried every disk I can think of, doesn't read anything.

I did a database recovery...nothing. I'm not sure I want to do a system factory restore, because I don't want to lose all my save data.

I remembered that 'stupid' article I wrote off several weeks ago and I decided to research the problem.
I came across this video and I started feeling really ridiculous a few minutes in: This is an actual problem people.

A quick youtube search brought up a series of videos of people, all seeming incredibly not-crazy, apparently having the same problem. To say that I'm freaked out would be an understatement. Reasons vary from game overheating the disk laser, to defective disks.

Yeah -_-

I don't know what to do, I'm probably going to have to send it in. I own a 60 Gig PS3, I'm annoyed of having to pay to get it fixed, but having a working backward compatible machine is kinda important for me.

Shit, just having a working PS3 is kinda important for me.

Is this karma for this?

So yeah, I'm pretty freaked out by this.
If I can accomplish anything here, I hope I can spread the word out a little bit.  If your game starts freezing: Get that sucker out of your PS3 pronto!

FXIII is well known to destroy consoles. Your PS3 obviously did not complete his L'cie focus.

In all seriousnes, I've finished FF13 on my PS3 and didn't have a single technical problem whatsoever.

Wait, is it Sony's problem or Square's problem? I've the 360 version, and it works perfectly.

I think one of Joystiq's writers had a PS3 freezing while playing FFXIII.

I honestly doubt the game just killed your PS3. Its just like the MW2 scenario where millions of copies were sold and a number of people had their consoles crashed when they were playing it. Mind you that some people play MW2 for hours, this can be the same case with FFXIII considering its length (though to be honest that would a borefest to me... I still need to finish the game).

It's probably an act of mercy. I am on my second stretch of FFXIII gaming, trying desperately to finish it but that game frustrates me to no end.

So I'm assuming that it's Square's problem? Also, can we officially retire the following :P?

Played through FFXIII with no problems. However, I had this exact same thing happen to me on Valkyria Chronicles. I also have the 60 gig. So I know how annoying it is. That will be 150 dollars sir. From what I read it was a laser issue with the system. I had it fixed about a year ago, I have had no problems since. I doubt it has anything to do with it, but just in case I never watch movies on the ps3 anymore.

It's probally too graphically demanding on the ps3's meager 7800GTX 256mb gpu. It overheats, that's why you get freezing. Then when you shut it off from the back of the console, you fry your blue ray lazer. Happens to alot of ppl before as i've remembered, everything from call of duty 4 to gta4. Then you might ask, why doesn't ps3 exclusives freeze? Well it's simply not completely using the gpu. Only for polygons, all those effects are from the cpu, that's why. I mean I was surprised how graphically nice FFXIII looked on the ps3, I thought I was playing a pc game for a second. Also another thing about these games freezing is ppl spend alot of time on it. Call of duty 4's multiplayer, gta4's story campainge, FFXIII grinding. Not good for the gpu, it's best to take breaks and it affects mostly the 60 gig sku for most of these ppl belive it or not. I seen alot of ps3's break from various forums, it's always 90% the 60 gig ps3 sku. Guess what, that happened to me before.

Yeah, it seems that the Blu Ray drive on that 60 gig model breaks easily. I had the same happen with MGS4 two years ago, PS3 just wouldn't read discs.

Wow, black people play Square games?? Aaaawww I'm just kidding. Anyways, I haven't had any problems and I have a launch PS3. I've played every single major game and some minor games on this system and haven't had any problems. Even with after that update that made the PS3 freeze after playing Uncharted. So, I'm going to take one for the team. I still have my launch PS3. It has been awhile since I played FF XIII because I've already beaten it. I'm gonna pop it in and see what happens. Wish me luck everyone.

Are we sure this isn't just a case of  a lot of people playing the game, and ps3's breaking naturally?

More people playing a game = more chances of the console breaking whilst playing it. This happens for every big game it seems. I'm willing to bet all this kerfuffle with  FF13 is no different

@HitmanAgent47:@Suikoden: I already knew half the comments were going to be other people proclaiming that they didn't have a problem. Here are two really great replies that can give me hope, and are applicable to the situation. Both of you, thanks a bunch.

Suikoden, how similar was this to your situation?

If anything I feel like I'm in a pickle.
Sending in the machine is something I can do, although I'm concerned that it might happen again.  It's all very infuriating.

Agreed. Happened with MW2 for PS3, one of my earlier threads. Nothing to trip about. Using the console more will obviously cause it to wear down (mostly fat PS3s which have been in use longer)

I would not think it has anything to do with many people playing at once, as I was playing Valkyria Chronicles at the time. I wouldn't think more than 47 people were also playing it at that time. I wish a few hundred thousand people were playing that game at once for the franchise sake. I think it has to do with the older 60g models, specifically the laser or eye. It does not seem to be an extremely common error, and with all the 360 failure rates Sony sure isnt going to comment on it. I am afraid you have to bite the bullet and send it in. I am sure you can find self fix videos on youtube if you do not mind voiding your warrenty and are tech savvy. Of course I would not recommend that. There are other places that fix PS3s and 360s online for cheaper. I do not know how well they work though. Safest bet is to send to Sony. It is not fair in the least. 150 is too much. I think. I would almost rather just buy a new system if it was not such a pain in the dick to transer everything.  At least Microsoft fixed my system for free......thrice .

this is why you don't play FF13. Not only it's bad (no, really!) it also kills your PS3.

@Catolf:@niamahai: Allow me to end this end not and have some sort of control over my blog from over a week ago. Having random people bumping it at this point is pretty unnecessary:

My PS3 was shipped to Sony a few days ago.
The anxiety of what has transpired still rings loudly, more specifically, anxiety of whether or not this same incident will happen again. I bit-the-bullet and spent almost $200 to get it fixed.

Regarding the question of "whether or not the actual game caused the machine from bricking": I have yet to make a conclusion.
More snooping and research online reveals a broader problem with the 60 gigs, while there are other examples online of being with people able to reproduce the error with Final Fantasy XIII. I can't legitimately throw complete opinion to one side or the other.

Best advice at this point is be happy if the game works on whatever-iteration-of-hardware you have, and if you even see a hint of a problem get that sucker outta-there.
Simple, but you don't want to risk the repercussions.

Don't start. Really.. Don't. And if you want too, then not here.

@Catolf: Don't worry about that, and like I said my warranty apparently expired.

When you send in your information to Sony they are very thorough in their preparation process in sending a machine in. A lot comes down to what you have to do, specifically getting all your personal information and saves onto an external harddrive. It's far more work than just detaching a 360 HD. Reformatting of the machine, I kid you not, took over three hours.

I'm curious if my warranty will be renewed after my system is shipped, or if there's a warranty plan I can get into.
