Having a deep coverage of a game, should exclude them from giving a purchasing advice to their audience. The advantage of that coverage is that people can make up their own minds if they want to purchase that game. Journalists can back whatever they want in Kickstarter, but they should restrain themselves from advocating for that product to the wide public. Its a big controversy because the community is calling a woman a liar. It seems that this is a big no no and everyone went to arms to defend any woman that has opposition to her views. What is the difference between Jack Thompson and Anita?
@wilshere: Patreon backers are public so there's no issue at all here. Asking to a journalist to be unbiased is asking him to be a robot. I say that as a journalist.
So they shouldn't provide coverage or review of that product. Just like GB not reviewing Bastion.
@strohfist: Nope. They're obviously trying to downplay it, along with the rest of the gaming press.
Patrick did a blog IIRC, but it basically was exactly what you said. "Ugh this is bad, but stop treating Zoey Quinn like this".
That sucks. While I guess I see a certain merit in some instances to the adage "not feeding the trolls" I think in this particular case it would be immensely helpful for for the GB staff to take a stand, especially in light of some of the attitudes that are present even on this site. Really sad that this topic - one that definitely merits further discussion, is not a sticky or at least at the top of the forum at all times.
I think for GB is best to stay away from this mess. They are not involved in it. Making a stand will only agitate one or the other side of the community.
Nothing wrong with being angry. It just means that you care and want to improve at a certain task. The problem comes when you lose control over it. Years ago i punched through the bottom of a wooden chair aheha and threw stuff across the room. Now i just grunt and moan while trying to figure out how can i improve my approach in the game.
If we didn't get angry, we'd be still in the stone age.
Also, as a general aside, I can understand why the gaming press would find it annoying to listen to complaints about journalistic ethics considering that most of the people complaining about it probably have no real formal training on what those ethics are. Would you like to be told you are doing your job wrong by people who don't understand how your job works?
Most of them don't have a journalism degree. Even the ones that do have one, don't see an issue with overlooking basic ethics.
@gnoltac: You usually have comedians like Jon Stewart and John Oliver who call out right wing propaganda or flat out false reporting. And it made me wonder, do they receive violent threats like Totalbiscuit has received?
Jon Stewart does false reporting of his own. The last example is the shooting in Ferguson.
I really hate that news has become "my politics and agenda vs yours". I wish they were just reporting the facts as they happened.
There is barely any privacy on the street, let alone on the internet. Interesting thought, right now NSA agents are swapping naked pictures of strangers to one another.
