Collection: NES

Many games in my NES collection are missing manuals and boxes, because most of them were bought by my dad who questioned why I "wanted to keep the packaging".

The only games that we had the boxes for were TMNT2 and Probotector (with the Konami code written down on the inside flap as is appropriate), Ironsword, Super Mario Bros. 1 and Robo Warrior. The boxes for TMNT2 and Probotector ended up getting lost while moving house, my original copy of SMB1 ended up getting stolen, and my cartridge for Ironsword ended up disappearing (not stolen by the same guy) but I still had the box.

As such, it's easy to see which games were bought later (or re-purchased). Out of the "complete" games all boxes are in great condition except for Robo Warrior, which is in really poor condition.

List items

  • [PAL]

    • Two controllers. One controller needs to be replaced because the B button is basically unresponsive due to heavy use (the harder you push the faster you run = FAX.) • RF switch needs to be replaced, one of the um... thingamajigs is a bit bent.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Fuck the reaper.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • One of my fondest memories of this game was when I played it at my grandma's house when she was babysitting me. I was having trouble on the snow level against the spiders and she asked why I didn't just jump on the spiders and I was like 'that doesn't work'. She was like 'but you haven't tried'. Well, I tried and it totally worked.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Some of my favorite music on the NES. • Unlicensed Terminator game.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • Maybe the best music on the NES. • Probably one of the best games ever made and certainly top 3 NES games. • European box art looks better in person.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Justin Bailey. • Made back when outrage culture wasn't a thing and you could reward the player with a bikini ending if they did well.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Objectively better than Contra. • Fond memories playing it cooperatively with my dad. • Beating the game without using the Konami code is still something I look back on as one of my biggest achievements.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • Originally borrowed it from a neighbor and fell in love (in the game, not the neighbor). • It's probably my favorite puzzle game of all time. • Might be the first game I experienced video game addiction to. • Ended up buying a copy of my own.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • It's an awful game with timer based, trial & error game play. • My grampa bought it for me as a graduation gift in like third grade or something.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • One of the games in my collection that I enjoy the least. • If your parents got you a game, it was the one you played because it was the one you had.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • Fondest memories include playing it with my stepsister (who died against the first goomba the first time she played it) and with my dad. • Fuck hammer bros. • Fuck repeating castles. • Repurchased in 2019, the original copy having been stolen by a friend (ex friend because of it) when we were kids.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Super Princess Peach 1. • They should make a New Super Mario Bros. 2.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • One of my favorite (and one of the best) games of all time. • Remember playing it with my dad and step sister, and also remember playing the combat portion of the game against my grandma.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Very fond memories playing this with my dad. • I had to choose between getting this game and a bike when I was a kid. Guess which one I picked? Zero regrets.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • Basically 8-bit Nier:Automata. • Made by 'Compile' which would later end up as Compile Heart and help develop games like Hyperdimension Neptunia which makes perfect sense since you basically play as a bikini-wearing robot in this game. • Nice mix of genres. • Extremely underrated. • Easily my favorite box art on the NES.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • I remember being blown away because of the fact that you could save your game and you didn't have to keep your NES powered all night when you went to sleep in order to continue playing the next day. • The golden cartridge is still the coolest shit ever.

  • [Cartridge Only]

    • Awesome game, but having your sub-weapon on Select is just awful.

  • [Complete With Box and Manual]

    • Back in the day, I mostly just watched while my dad played it. • Repurchased in 2019.
