I'm calling it: the Giant Bomb app for iPhone is now dead.

"It's a website about videogames...on your iPhone !" These kind words greet you after launching the official GB app on your iPhone. From there you could view news, videos, review, new releases and wiki pages. It was well made and easy to navigate, despite the video quality being horrible and some bugs with parsing your data. But people still loved it, the app letting you enjoy GB's dailey shenanigans on the go.

Sadly though, the app is now dead. Sure, you can still read news and look for wiki pages. But the video player seems to have been killed off. But we should have seen this coming. Jeff himself stated that the app was becoming pretty useless due to new technology, not bringing in any new income. Then the app went free (it used to be 2$) and started crashing often, especially during E3. Bugs started to appear, the app would often crash while you scrolled down to older videos. The release feature was also sort of messed up. All in all, it became more and more janky.

And thenthe news about a mobile site (m.giantbomb.com for members only) hit and that was the death sentence, my most used app became obsolete. The video player decided to die on me and the app lost all its appeal. But when you think about, this had to happen. What's one of the best features of the membership ? The mobile site ! The only way Giant Bomb could push everyone towards the membership is by killing off the app. Why pay for a membership when you can download a free app that gives you all the videos and wiki pages you could want on the go ? So I say is goodbye app, you'll be missed and hello awesome mobile site !

They changed the videos when the paid membership launched, so that's why the videos no longer work on the app. The app was too difficult to develop and maintain, and updates had to be approved by Apple. It's a process that they didn't like going through, but it was a necessary evil.

The only way they could finally kill the app was to launch the membership.

Dave answered a query about the app in this thread, which pretty much addresses why the app is the way it is:

" I just want a straight answer whether or not videos will continue to work on the GiantBomb iPhone app??  If they won't work in the future, I'll delete the app (even though I paid for it)  Thanks in advance guys! "

Straight answer. It is not a priority for the moment. We outsourced the app over a year and a half ago and recently changed the naming conventions of all our files. Once we get some time we'll look to see if it's something we change on the API side. If not, and it requires an actual code change in the app itself that needs to be submitted to apple, we likely won't fix it. It's why we opened the app to be free earlier this year, because we didn't have any engineers in house that could support it.

There's currently a superior mobile solution that goes along with subscriptions that is being supported daily by our team. There is no coincidence between the two events, we just changed a lot of engineering and the app problems were a result. You can choose to believe we won't support our current HTML5 offering but I'd look to my previous posts as to what went wrong with the Apple app and why we will never build anything directly for them ever again. We have 100% control over our new mobile efforts and as long as we're running, the mobile sites will run in relative parallel to the main sites.

The data and videos remain free and open to any third parties that would like to create free applications specific to Apple. There is a similar, well-built effort from the community on the Android side of things.

That's about as straight as I can get!

I don't really think it matters a whole lot seeing as the Premium mobile site is the successor to the GB app.

The mobile site is totally awesome. For something fresh out the gate it works super awesome. Also, they don't have to deal with Apple's app store either. I support m.giantbomb.com

It died when Jeff said they would stop supporting it back in January due to piracy, dealing with Apple on every little thing, and other circumstances.

@OtakuGamer: Well, you can get still working iOS-compatible videos even without a subscription, but they're not as easy to find. If someone wants to make a web app to make this easier, that would probably be useful.

The mobile site is pretty awesome. I have an Android phone, so having not to deal with an app lets everyone enjoy Giant Bomb on the go. Not just those fancy iPhone users.

The videos don't work in my Giant Bomb android app anymore, which is the main reason I bought a subscription.  That app was awesome though - watching the Railworks QL while I was riding the train home is a memory of the app that I will always savour.

I got the app when it was released and I did use pretty regularly. The new m.giantbomb is amazing compared to it. I'm pretty sure the the app will overhauled to cater to non subscribers and it should be so that they get the same amount of mobile access as subscribers do.

I have recently tested out the mobile and it's a great version of GB and the video quality real surprisingly good.

Oh, right. I was supposed to contact Harris so I could work on that. Thanks for the reminder, bro.

@LordAndrew: That's great to hear dude.  I really like how it laid the news and videos out for easy browsing.  I'll definitely keep an eye out for any future updates you make to the app.

I paid for the app specifically for video functionality...   Now they are asking me to give them more money for the same functionality.

At the time when I paid for that app I could not have been happier to give Giant Bomb my money.  The way they are jockeying for our money nowadays just completely bums me out.

As someone who doesn't have access to the mobile site, it sucks. But Whiskey Media is basically strictly catering to members now, so there's that.
