If anything, GamerGate has taught me that if a small and loud contingent of hateful people are part of a cause, no matter how righteous, it looses all legitimacy and actual power.
I agree that GamerGate began as a hate fuelled movement and that certain folks are using the "ethics in journalism" discussion to legitimise their shitty actions.
I will however say that the sheer noise that it has produced has allowed the ethics debate to actually receive the airtime it has so sorely needed, it's a shame it's attached at it's core to such Toxicity.
I myself have begun to shy away from GamerGate and have suggested to the folks contributing to my site GamesNosh to do the same, however we stand behind everything we have said previously. Please judge us on what we have said in the past and what we are saying and doing now, not because we have become attached to a hashtag.
I have admittedly used #gamergate to start a discussion about the ethics of gaming media and in a way, ended up providing a layer of legitimacy to some of the reprehensible actions of others.
It's a shame that sites like ours and people like Total Biscuit are being totally disregarded when trying to get our points across about games coverage, but I can understand why in this case, the baby is being thrown out with the bathwater.
