Prototype Review
What’s Hot:
- Intense violence, providing a lot of satisfaction.
- Huge arsenal of abilities and moves.
- Lots of activities to do out with the main storyline. (i.e consume events)
- Varied missions that can be completed in many ways.
- Interesting storyline and protagonist.
- Good voice acting and background noises.
- Plenty of things to keep you busy for many hours.
- The best parts from The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Crackdown all mixed together to create a great sandbox.
- Power wheel is a great addition to help access abilities with ease.
What’s Not:
- Look of the city is extremely bland. - Constant radio chatter is off-putting.
- Fight scenes often too chaotic and put you off the main objective.
- Targeting system isn’t very accurate.
- Getting collectibles can be very tedious and hard to spot unless close.
- Activities don’t have much variety as opposed to the mission which have a bit more variety. - Combos unlocked later in the game are hard to execute.
- Graphics are very dated for the Xbox 360 and could be improved on greatly.
The Verdict - Buy
If you are a fan of Sandbox games then this game is for you . Although the graphics are sub-standard compared to other games on the market, the intense violence and action scenes make up for it. Alex Mercer has access to a wide range of devastating powers at his disposal to wreak havoc. There are 31 missions in total, most of the missions are varied and can all be approached in different ways, so it varies the mission structure depending on the player. There are countless side-activities that will keep you occupied for many hours, and trying to get the platinum times will prove challenging for some.
The game is not perfect though; in fact there are many flaws. The graphics aren’t anything to write home about like i mentioned above -- especially when getting up close and personal to buildings. Camera angles and targeting difficulties are prevalent throughout the whole game and are often quite off putting. Although there are many activities, they don’t vary much and get quite tedious after a while. As you progress through the game you unlock various combos, which become aggravating to execute and leave your hands exhausted.
Personally, I think that Prototype is a definite buy for anyone into unrelenting violence and brutal fight sequences. The game is almost an amalgamation of The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Crackdown and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. All the best parts from these games put into one. It will keep you entertained for a hours but a second playthrough is unlikely, due to the repetitive nature of the storyline and activities. If you are someone who is into games with stunning visuals then this isn’t the game for you, so be warned.
