Rockstar's pulled it off yet again. I think that this should take away any doubt that Rockstar is the king of open world games.

Did New York Times break the review embargo, or did they get special permission from Rockstar?

I could see R* wanting mainstream and respected press outlets to publish reviews before the usual gaming press.

No, cause publications already have reviews. I got my GI two days ago and that had a review. Games.tm had a review, as did Edge.

@DystopiaX: yeah, but the NYT review is the first internet-published review, that is why I am wondering.

"Some of the game’s most powerful moments are presented simply as white text on a black screen. In the context of a medium in which almost everything is displayed visually, these prose segments in the form of memories and dreams ignite the imagination and lend the overall experience a rare depth." Dude finds text exciting - why should I care what he thinks

Well as far as I know the NYT site is mainly stuff from the paper, so if they printed the review there I think it would just be standard policy for them to reprint it online.

Is the game worth $300 and Oscar worthy? Those are the real questions.

Something about a newspaper reviewing a video game seems strange.

That review tells me absolutely nothing about the game. "Oh, it's set in the Wild West and there are, like, choices and stuff" Well, whoop-de-fucking-doo, mister reviewer. I could've gotten more from the back of the fucking box.

@Icemael:  When it comes to movie, t.v, and game reviews, The New York Times tends to dwell over the themes of the product, and less about the technicalities.

Never once did he talk about gameplay, but it was still a good review, although not direct at all.

@DystopiaX: I just checked, they haven't published (via print) the review yet, further leading me to believe that R* gave the NYT some sort of special embargo.

Or the NYT just thinks they can publish things when they want.

They probably can. If a mainstream publication offers to review your game, you do it to maybe attract part of the casual market, so if they release the review early there's not much you can say cause you know you'd give them review copies of your next game anyway.

If you were R*, wouldn't you allow an outlet who claimed your claimed that your game "sets a new standard for sophistication and ambition in electronic gaming" break embargo, allowing potential buyers to read it before Tuesday?

It's not that. It's that it's a big publication. You wanna bet that IGN, Gamespot, etc. won't give RDR a good score either?

Movies and TV shows are different; they are their themes, stories, characters and aesthetics. Video game, however, aren't. They're interactive. You play them. If the camera is poor, or the controls are uncomfortable, or the level design is bad, that's a serious problem. If one of those aspects of the game is especially good, that's something that deserves praise.

If you're reviewing a video game the same way you review movies and TV shows, you're doing it wrong. Not mentioning anything about what a game plays like is like not mentioning anything about a movie's story or characters.
