God of War III Review

4
  • PS3

Sony delivers a fittingly epic and savage PlayStation 3 debut for God of War, even if it does little to evolve the formula established by its predecessors.

Kratos. Son of Zeus. Ghost of Sparta. God of War. Pisces.
Kratos. Son of Zeus. Ghost of Sparta. God of War. Pisces.

Kratos is a man with serious anger-management issues--issues that he's been violently working out on the entire pantheon of Olympic gods over the course of the last two God of War games, dismembering, disfiguring, and disembowling every god, demi-god, and beast of myth that crosses his path. This hands-on approach to primal scream therapy continues with God of War III, the first in the series designed specifically for the PlayStation 3. God of War has always been a big graphical showcase for Sony, and to this end God of War III doesn't disappoint, using that extra horsepower to bring a phenomenal level of both detail and scale to the game's presentation. While the technology has advanced, the relative shortage of meaningful changes and refinements to God of War's vivisecting gameplay formula means that it's not quite as thrilling as the first (or second) go 'round. Some of these last-gen holdovers make the experience feel less cutting-edge than it might otherwise, though it's still plenty brutal enough to earn the God of War name.

Still playing fast and loose with Greek mythology, God of War III sees Kratos continue on his quest for vengeance against the gods of Olympus, now with his sights set squarely on dear old dad, Zeus. Of course, Kratos can't just walk right up to Zeus, gut him like a trout, and roll credits, so you'll spend most of the ten-or-so hours of God of War III trying to collect the mythical objects that Kratos believes he needs to finish the job. Of course, on the way, Kratos will face off with, and usually murder, whatever significant figures of Greek mythology he didn't already turn into a red smear in the first two games, all in the most unflinchingly graphic, Verhoeven-esque way possible.

It's called God of War, not God of Friendly Handshakes.
It's called God of War, not God of Friendly Handshakes.

If God of War III is your introduction to the series, there's a brief video that will basically catch you up to speed, though at this point, all you really need to know is that Kratos is an angry jerk, and pretty much everyone else he encounters is a vindictive, condescending, double-dealing jerk. His bottomless anger seemed justified in the beginning, but his continued insistence to pursue his vengeance at the cost of, basically, the entire known world makes it hard to conjure up much compassion, and makes him seem more like a petulant child than an unrelenting instrument of righteousness. The line between anti-hero and villain can be razor thin, and I occasionally found myself feeling more like I was the antagonist in someone else's story. Kratos is a consistently sadistic son of a bitch, and it's been his sole character trait for so long that certain turns in the story feel unearned. It's hard to tell exactly where the series will go from here--not to say that the ending is anticlimactic, but its gestures towards closure seem... tentative.

The gameplay experience that wraps around this revenge tour doesn't venture too far from the rhythms of the previous God of War games, focusing primarily on contained group fights, mixing it up with some traversal sequences, some lever-pulling and box-pushing puzzles, and some really huge boss fights, with plenty of quick time events to highlight the game's penchant for cinematic flair. The combat is agreeably fast-paced and intense, and I found the default difficulty level to be the almost perfect, providing a hearty challenge while rarely becoming teeth-gnashingly frustrating.

 Say
 Say "AAAHRGH!"

In addition to the standard-issue chain blades, you'll unlock a series of weapons and abilities as you progress through God of War III, all of which can be upgraded using the red orbs found inside both treasure chests, and your enemies' chests. I found it kind of odd that two of the alternate weapons you pick up are variations on the basic chain blade motif, which compelled me to pretty much ignore them in favor of the more distinctive Nemean Cestus, a massive pair of lion-headed gauntlets that favor impact over range. Regardless of your weapons of choice, success in battle in God of War III ultimately comes down to diligent use of Kratos' dodge and counter abilities, as well as knowing which of Kratos' plentiful attacks to use on specific enemies or in specific situations, with a certain eye towards crowd control.

Save for a handful of eye-catching sequences that make unique use of the Icarus wings, I found most of the traversal stuff not necessarily bad, but something to fill the downtime in between the administration of savage beatings. For as terrific as God of War III looks--and it is easily one of the best-looking PlayStation 3 games out there right now--there's something vaguely mechanical about the way Kratos shimmies along ledges and swings from his chains.

Similarly, the quick time events are implemented in such a way that I sometimes felt they were drawing my attention away from the flashy camera moves and gruesome acts they were intended to highlight. It's all the stuff that you expect from a God of War game, which I suspect is the very reason why parts of the game feel kind of perfunctory. It's like the developers had a mechanical understanding of the beats they were expected to hit, and focused more on nailing that stuff than pushing the experience somewhere new.

Fighting a Titan is like fighting a mountain that hates you.
Fighting a Titan is like fighting a mountain that hates you.

These issues, however, hardly define the experience of God of War III. No, God of War, as always, is all about vividly grotesque ways in which Kratos fells his enemies, and an incredible sense of scale as you take down one impossibly leviathanic enemy after another. Aside from the flight sequences I mentioned earlier, the most amazing moments in God of War III for me revolved around the Titans, the huge, primitive elder gods that preceded the Olympians. Acting as both enemy and environment, the Titans are the best example of God of War III's capacity to make you feel simultaneously powerful and insignificant, as the camera zooms out from a standard third-person view of Kratos to a perspective that makes him look like a flea on the Titan's back, all in real-time, and all of it looking incredibly sharp. Kratos himself features an impressive level of detail, both during gameplay but particularly in cutscenes, to the point that the other characters can look a little crude by comparison--which, really, says more about how good Kratos looks than anything else.

The beautiful rendering of Kratos' ugliness is what made God of War III a compelling experience for me, despite of the bits that felt unnecessarily slavish to the God of War formula. Even if it's not the best God of War game, it's unequivocally the best-looking God of War to date, and it makes for a wicked showpiece for the PlayStation 3.

Respect for this review Ryan. Happy to see you dont feel you have to give it a 5 like everyone else does. It's a great game but it doesn't do much different than before.

There were sections in this that literally had me playing with my jaw open throughout their duration. However, I really feel that there seem to be some discrepancies in the quality level throughout the game (the titan fights have clearly been lavished with a lot more polish than some of the game, in particular a few of the rather dull corridor run battle sections).

It's a great showpiece for what the PS3 can do but, as a game, it's just God of War. The combat has been refined (the grappling in particular stands out, as does the new L1 circle combo which I feel demonstrates that the developers really knew what worked and what didn't in prior games) and it's definitely a step above the last games in the series but the design philosophy and gameplay those were built upon is starting to show its age. Damn it can look good though (a couple of the boss fights look better than the CG from the first 2 games - both in scale and execution).

Also: Kratos is a real dick. This and Heavy Rain are one of few games that make me whince and feel genuinely uncomfortable at points but for slightly different reasons.

I agree with Ryan's written reviews, but I think the scores are usually too harsh. Does God of War 3 bring anything new to the table? No, but the game takes existing concepts and mechanics and executes them so well that it's still a close-to-perfect game. Uncharted 2 was the same way but it still managed to earn that 5... from Brad.

This pattern I'm seeing in Ryan's reviews is made even odder by the fact that I'm pretty sure I've heard Ryan state more than once that innovation is overrated(I think they were discussing Darksiders on the Bombcast). Sometimes it's enough to just make a damn good game, regardless of whether or not it's gaming's newest revolution.

Pretty good written review Ryan, I just have a problem with one part.

You criticize the combat to being too much like God of War 1 & 2 and not evolved enough.

I don't want to single you out, but this is starting to get on my nerves.  I see game reviewers say things like "it didn't live up to my expectations."  But what exactly are those expectations?  You need to list how the combat could be evolved instead of just saying well, it wasn't evolved enough for me, but I have no idea how to make it better!

Sorry for the rant, but I think it needs to be said.

While I do respect Ryans opinions, I beat god of war 3 and I think that its very worthy of 5 stars.  The game excelled in many aspects that make it far greater than anything else out there and people are complaining about minor things just to have something to complain about.  But peoples opinions are their owns and I can't complain about that.

Beatles Rock Band is a better game than God of War. I don't even like God of War, but yeah, after Bayonetta I found that incredibly odd. Ryan loves giving out them 4 stars lately

Ultimately, it is just a sequel to a fun video game franchise. Unless a game radically retunes the formula of its predecessors and establishes itself as being just as, if not stronger than that which originally defined it, it can only really be called just an upscaled, current-gen sequel that's good for those who needed a fix of their franchise. Hi.

Wow. This sounds like the year of "not what I expected" games. Yes I meant that towards Ryan's review. Something I noticed with everyone. But one thing I have to admit, there's something about this game that seems like they pushed it too far. I can't put my finger on it, but when I do, I'll let everyone know.

@Snipes424:  For a franchise that's been carrying around the same combos / combat system for the past 5 years, I think it's "allowed" to point out that it hasn't evolved much, cause really, it hasn't.  And I don't really think it's Ryan's job to try and come up with ideas on how to change it.  This review gives you a very good idea as to what to expect from this game, explains what changed and what didn't, and his opinion of the game.
I don't see anything wrong with this review.

Played it. First 20 minutes are maybe the best 20 minutes I've ever seen in an action game. The rest of the game felt like playing another game that tried to do as good but never realy succeeded.
You don't start the show with a show stopper !

Obviously you haven't played the rest of the game because there is a boss that starts with crow and ends with nose that is waaaay better than the first boss.

Like you say it's YOUR opinion and I respect it but don't say that I "obviously" did not play the game simply because you disagree with MY opinion. Even if some boss fights were as good as the first one, everything between bosses is boring for me. I just did not have fun playing this game. Is this allowed ?

Yeah, people seem to love predicting how people will comment and say some sarcastic remark that adds nothing.  I don't know if people want to be seen as psychics for predicting any backlash, but it happens to absolutely every big game review. Whenever I look at comments on any game site, it's always this same shit. "Oh man, I'm getting in before the Sony shitstorm" or some other nonsense.

The fact that people aren't calling out Ryan's credibility or acting as if he thinks his opinion is fact is truly awesome, but we don't need to have the preemptive unfunny sarcasm.

Modern Warfare 2 totally deserved that score at launch, back when the campaign was mind-blowingly ridiculous and the multiplayer was fresh.  You know, back before all the bugs and glitches were discovered, and everyone spent all of their time running around with Akimbo 1887s and grenade launchers?   Whether or not it *still* deserves what it got is questionable, but I've not really ever heard of an outlet retroactively scoring games.  I'm not sure I ever WANT to hear of something like that.  Also, Jeff reviewed Modern Warfare 2.  If it were Ryan it could have scored differently.  I really wish people would take this crap into account.

That being said, did you actually read the review, or did you just get so hung up over the score presented to you prior to the start of the text that you didn't even bother?  What's written is what's important, though I doubt no amount of arguing will ever convince you of that.

Kind of short review, no? I agree for the most part. But I will never understand people's complaints about a sequel not changing enough. Especially with one like God of War. If it was different, it wouldn't be God of War now would it?

As for the score, I'm fine with 4/5. That's what I'd give the first two games as well.

In all seriousness, I think this seems like a fair score. Especially with regards to Kratos with his undying hatred of everything starting to feel really pretty dull nowadays.

"
They're not just going to change his character like that because it feels 'dull' that he'll go through anything for vengeance. They have to make him stick to his motives otherwise he'll feel completely out of character. I don't want Kratos to suddenly be compassionate about ever living creature then only kill Zeus. I want him to fuck everyone up because that's his character.

No need to get so worked up over one person's opinion.  A person's personal taste in games and bias will always affect their opinion, I don't care how "professional" of a journalist they claim to be.  Ryan (and Brad for that matter), and most reviewers are affected by this.  If you enjoy the game who cares what Ryan thinks, who (as some people seem to miss), is just some dude who doesn't like certain games.

Because Jeff liked MW2 more than Ryan liked GOW3.  It's really simple actually, and it's why it's hard for me to take just one person's (or website's), opinion seriously.

And honestly, yes, it's extremely inconsistent.  GOW3 gets a lower score because it's not very original, and MW2 is plagued by unoriginality, considering the absolute over flooding of shooters in this market.  *goes to metacritic*

lol at the internet rage. As expected.  This game deserves a 4/5 for sure. It is just God of War 2 in a higher resolution (was going to say HD, but God of War 2 was in HD). Sure, the game is awesome, but it doesn't do anything new.

And for those idiots who are comparing it to the MW2 review: fuck off. Really, are we going to go through this same stupid arguments? Different genres, different games, different audiences, different reviewers, different review scores. Really, comparing a shooter to a button masher in terms of score is ridiculous.   And all this is coming from me -- someone who doesn't like Ryan that much.  Great review, Ryan. Keep them coming, and keep them honest. Very few websites actually review a game and tell us how they feel; rather, they just appeal to the fanboys.

Meh. More reason for me to stop trusting GB reviews because they seem to masturbate the tastes and opinions of the reviewers rather than give a objective review of the game. Well except for Brad, he gives very good objective reviews. Now I know why Gamespot fired Jeff.

Man I respect Ryan's opinion and all but come on.  I played through this game and its definietly a 5 in my opinion.  For people saying the combats the same, look at mw1.5, battlefield 1000 and the rest of fps', you shoot in all of them, nothing original, but they get great reviews.  God of war's combat was fun, if it ain't broke why fix it, but gow3's combat was tweaked a bit and it felt better, and if was too short for you, play it on a harder difficulry.  But even if that wasn't its strong point the graphics are some of the best around, the whole game is epic, and its just a lot of fun to play.  Sorry Ryan but I really think this one deserved a 5.

Somebody doesn't quite know what a review is. This is the reviewers opinion of the game, masturbating their tastes is kind of the point. We want to know what they think of the game and how they rate it.

A truly objective review would go something like this:

God of War is published by Sony. It has X levels and runs at about 9 hours long. Blah blah blah about the story. The game runs in 1080p. It features only an English audiotrack, but provides subtitiles in English, Spanish and French.

There's your objective review, do you now see how dense you are? Good. Go read the the back of your cereal boxes now. I think those are on par with your level of capable thought.

@aurahack:  Agreed. Remember ACII? That was 4/5, and that was my third favorite game of the year, behind Uncharted and Batman. I thought The Hurt Locker was the best movie of the year, but my favorite was a tie between District 9 and Inglorious Basterds. Different strokes for different folks, peeps!

" There were sections in this that literally had me playing with my jaw open throughout their duration. "
The entire Chronos battle......  Holy fucking donkey shit man. I mean, JESUS.

Thank god somebody told it like it is.  The game is good I'm sure - but based on the demo it doesn't do a single thing different than the previous two.  No innovation, no 5 star rating.  This is why I love Giant Bomb - its nice to see dudes who don't fellate games simply because of its rep or hype.

Why would anyone be angry at the review score. Ryan is just a pessimistic guy by nature so a 4/5 from him is a very good score.

Also from what I gather he's pretty crappy at these sorts of games anyway so I can see why he wouldn't get a 5/5 sort of experience from it.

Ha that is a little funny considering his complaints here apply almost exactly to MW2. Releasing a highly polished, best in genre experience but not evolving on your previous efforts. Check and check.

Are you guys just brainless or is their really something in your minds that makes you completely oblivous to the fact that Jeff review MW2. Ryan and Jeff are NOT the same person. Morons.

Nice review. Looking forward to this game, good to see it get a favourable score. The amount of weapons that seem like different skins of the blades of chaos put me off a bit, but it still sounds interesting.

No need for your rudeness, they are entitled to their view, namely that the site should have some sort of standard. Innovation should either matter or not matter across the board, no matter who reviews what.

It's too bad, but this really was the most predictable review ever, once everyone found out Ryan was reviewing it. It's kind of hilarious.

Also, there's a lot of "fuck off"s and ridiculous things from both sides, too, and that's also kind of hilarious. Take it easy. It's a late review, possibly held back until the weekend because everyone knew something under a 5 would make some people upset. So....cut it out.
