Free weekend also if you want to just try it first.
Really, really great game. Doesn't have huge longevity but at $2, why complain? Gorgeous art style and charming sense of humour, thoroughly recommended.
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released Aug 31, 2011

DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO
Get it and build nothing but death valleys populated entirely by elephants, you won't regret it.
I imagine the developer would disagree with me, but yeah, certain units seem broken as fuck, while others are near useless. The top tier war elephants are amazing (thanks random YouTube video that taught me that), but the cows are a waste of money. Catapults and war balloons are also pretty good. And then towers and fans only exist to fortify choke points where you've already spammed a bunch of the aforementioned units.
Anyway, I noticed that the devs patched the game recently:
Product Update - Valve
Updates to Rock of Ages have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:
-Removed ‘found games’ window. Custom match now creates a lobby if no games are found.
-Identified and fixed some connection errors.
-Improved invites and internal matchmaking flow.
Which is good on them, but kind of a little sad. I just don't see the free weekend and the sale doing that much to boost the number of online players. Look, you're the same guys who made Zeno Clash. You don't make games with broad appeal. You made a weird rolling/tower defense game with a weird campaign, and while it technically has multiplayer, I think most people are buying it to mess around with the campaign, and pretty much be done with it. The multiplayer is fun against friends, I guess, but it's not the sort of thing I'm ever going to want to hit "Quick Match" in and play against some random guy who is completely savage at the game.

But... I could give this homeless dude the 2 dollars so he can buy booze...
What booze is he gonna get for 2$? Should of given him a 50.

Giving a homeless dude $2 and playing Rock of Ages are fairly similar experiences. Toss a coin.
I really loved the rolling parts; the tower placing, for the most part, seemed like pointless busywork =(

There's some strategy to it, but it mostly comes down to building stuff on areas of the course where your opponent will be rolling uphill, or where there is a sharp corner. In both situations they will have decelerated, making it easier for all of your catapults/war elephants/war balloons to hit them.
And then some maps don't have uphill sections or sharp corners, and I just have no idea how to reasonably stop or slow down the opponent, so on those I barely win by the skin of my teeth.

Acually don't because it is terrible.
why is it terrible? because I couldn't disagree more
All of the tower placement is pointless. You can jump over them or go around and that just leaves the game as a ball rolling down the hill simulator. The cutscenes are kind of funny but you can watch them on Youtube. I played this game for free and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Oh and the bosses are fucking awful
I agree . A very solid , fun game . Got it free on PS+ a few months back... I'd say it's worth at least $5 .

The bosses are fine and a nice change of pace. None of them are particularly frustrating and they all look great visually.
And I wouldn't say that the tower placement is pointless. Try a mission where you don't build any defences and see how quickly you lose. There is some skill to it, although it's not particularly deep.
I played this game for what must be nearly 100 hours or so, mostly multiplayer with a friend. The multiplayer part of this game is fucking great and you can go more in depths for a long time. While improving you just keep rediscovering cool new techniques etc. and it's great fun.
That said, it also makes you really, really angry at times. When you feel like nothing does what you fucking want it to ... you can lose your shit.
This is one of those games that makes me remember that there are only ever going to be a few dozen games each year that attract any sort of consistent and healthy multiplayer community. And they're almost always big budget games, with rare indie exceptions like Minecraft and Day Z. But the thing is, even those have multiplayer with easily understood broad appeal, whereas something like Rock of Ages is weird enough that it is a much harder sell for people to stick with. It makes me sad when devs put a bunch of thought and effort into multiplayer that only a few thousand people ever appreciate.I played this game for what must be nearly 100 hours or so, mostly multiplayer with a friend. @Mr_Misery: The game was designed to be accommodating for both tower defense players and Super Monkey Ball players. Proper tower placement and predicting player action can completely ruin a SMB player; and vice-versa: good SMB play can entirely bypass some poorly thought-out tower defense play.
This game is one of the most special little downloadable experiences I've had this generation; but I understand: it isn't for everyone.
