Thumbs up for a captivating albeit somewhat cheesy game

Second Sight follows a patient who wakes up in a medical facility with complete memory loss. It isn't long until he discovers that he has psychic abilities, and that there may have been a good reason for him being locked up tightly. Soon after his memory starts to come back, and reveals a storyline filled with mad scientists, Russians and a shady organization that may be behind it all.

    Story

First and foremost, what makes this game good is the story and the characters - the gameplay switches back and forth between the 'now' and 6 months ago, which helps build up the suspense, and keeps the plot from running dry.
The main characters themselves are detailed enough to make them seem believable, and although some of them, such as the cigar-chomping Colonel with the badass image, may seem a bit caricatured, it does not detract much from the overall experience.
Even though the backstory of a mission to Siberia in search of an infamous Russian scientist is interesting enough, it seems to stumble towards the end of the game, resulting in a somewhat unsatisfying end, which is a disappointment. Conversely it is the gameplay in the "present" which carries the game. The tale of how the protagonist, John Vattic, searches for the answers as to why he was locked up, and what had happened to him is filled with suspense worthy of any decent thriller. The present also takes place in the urban U.S., which also helps it to feel much more alive than running around deserted villages in Siberia!

The gameplay is mainly action-based and pretty much gives you the choice of either using your psychic powers or classic weaponry in order to deal with enemies. Some levels even make room for stealth-based action although the somewhat buggy camera really can make sneaking around a pain in the ass.

    Graphics and sound

As for graphics, the game is very similar to other Free Radical games such as TimeSplitters, with characters not appearing angular in any way, but at the same time not looking awesome. The animation, though, is top-notch - especially in the cutscenes, where people move fluently and when they talk their expressions really shine through.
The environments are bland at best - sure, the medical facility looks like a medical facility etc., but you won't be stopping up to admire the view anytime soon - especially not in Siberia.
There is one thing about the environment that I have to applaud, though, and that is the way you interact with computers - when you find a computer you get to use the mouse to navigate a dumbed down OS, which is actually pretty fun, especially when there are also materials you can find, which are not directly linked to your quest. An exaple: In the first chapter of the game, you at one point end up killing a guard who was using a computer - if you afterwards use the computer, you find that he had been chatting with his girlfriend, who's still online. The scenario is pretty hilarious and helps to add some in-game atmosphere.

The music in the game is dark and ambient electronic - sometimes it features a bit too prominent, but most of the time it just stays out of the way, so it's not much of a problem. The sound effects and voice acting also get their respective jobs done.

    Conclusion

To sum up, Second Sight is an enjoyable game which I have been playing several times - the replay value is pretty much none-existent, but the interesting story and characters mean that you'll want to try it out again once you've forgotten your first play-through. An enjoyable, well-done game, but certainly no milestone of gaming.

A good effort, but comes up short 0

This game is one of those that I just happened to have around, and didn't really have high expectations for it, but was disappointed nonetheless for a few reasons.  The story was cliche and predictable, but tried to complicate things with psychic powers. The camera is placed much too far away from John Vaddic the whole game, and gets very finicky near walls and such. About 2/3 of the way through the game, SS just gets very monotonous. You have access to all the powers, and a few selection of  g...
