Honestly, I don't understand it. It's fine for players to be able to blow other humans' heads off and run over their body parts while their character is using every curse word in the book, but God forbid you show two characters having sex, something that's natural to (most) human beings and necessary for the population to grow.
Anyone else confused by the controversies?
Why does sex in video games cause so much controversy?
I've no idea. Despite the number of these type of threads there's never a good answer that everyone can agree one. I do share your sentiment, it's just stupid altogether.
in all seriousness there should be no big deal as long as the games rating reflects the things that happen in the game
so i have no idea why people get there pan-tays in a twist
It's because we as a society freak out whenever we see skin revealed. Take that Justin Timberlake thing as an example, the controversy isn't only in games.
" Because skin is easily the single most offensive thing in this universe. "Your epidermis is showing.
I'd say it's because most people think that "Video Games are for kids", and "Only kids play Video Games."
Using their logic:
1- Video Games are for kids.
2- Only Kids play videogames.
3- A videogame has sex in it.
4- Kids, (and only kids), are playing this 'sex videogame'.
5- Report this information to Fox News.
6- Rage.
Also because people automatically think if sex is present in video games, then that sex must be playable, and the video game is a sex simulator. Hot Coffee didn't help that mess.
Two thoughts:
1. Video games are still thought of as a medium for kids and being primarily played by kids. Neither of these are true anymore of course.
2. In America at least, it's our throwback to being founded by some screwed up Puritans. Hating your imperfect self with a hatred of all but procreational sexuality being the underlying premise of those fucktwats and still today by most Christians.
Because we live in a extremely repressed society that still thinks sex is shameful and sinful. Also the mainstream media is always looking for a scapegoat so that parents can feel safe blaming someone else for how fucked up their kids are, and video games happen to be the most popular choice right now.

" @JackiJinx said:Porn itself the fairly controversial, though." Because it's controversial in every media outlet, minus porn, in America. "This. "
" @natetodamax: Totally. But I still wouldn't say that counts as everyone. "Well, you know what I mean :P
Well sure, WE know that, but this is a 'Videogame' we're talking about. Most people probably don't know or CARE that there is a rating system. All THEY know is that "Video Games are for kids", and "Only kids play Video Games.""Mass Effect had an M rating, so it was obviously targeted at adults."

Unfortunatly true, which means some game developers often remove any sexual content from their games when they're importing them to the U.S. therefore limiting the games potential.
" As most video game 'controversies', it stems from bad parenting. Don't want little Johnny seeing some dude get blown up or someone having sex in Mass Effect? Be a parent and don't let them play an M rated game. "I don't think it's bad parenting as much as it is kids being stupid. For example, I'm 14, and the majority of my games are rated M. I'm not going to grab some guns, take some pills, and go shoot up a school and rape girls. Parents don't unwillingly cause children to do that. It's the children themselves.

I was referring to the people who let their kids play M rated games and then complain that there kids play them in the first place because they are too violent or whatever their excuse may be.

And the reason my parents are fine with me playing M rated games is because my father also plays them. i.e. Call of Duty, Battlefield 1943
You have my vote, good sir. When I, hopefully, get into public office. I will dispel this myth, I will make it my lifelong mission if I have to. "
I too fail to understand this. Why are multiple decapitations more acceptable than a natural reproductive act. Are parents seriously more concerned with keeping their kids from seeing sexual acts than murders? What I get from that is that they'd rather have their children be murderers than sexually active individuals.
