E3 2014: We're Talking Over the Sony Press Conference

I really like these videos but I wish there was a way to mute just Alex. He is such a downer and everything that comes out of his mouth is negative.

I want new IP. The start of last gen they announced Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassins Creed, Gears, Uncharted, all these great looking new IP to get you excited for the new gen. This time it's just more of the same.

I think the winner here isn't Sony or Microsoft but both the PS4 and Xbox One. I'm excited for every game I saw on stage on both Microsoft and Sony and for the first time, the next-gen consoles feel like their existence is truly justified.

As a consumer, gamer, Microsoft and Sony have both won my heart today.

Yeah, I gotta say, I wasn't really expecting to be hyped for E3 at all this year, but both XBox and PS4 have shown things that are really making me think about grabbing a next gen console this year. Or at least upgrading my PC...

I love how Brad does his usual "No that can't be right" and gets it wrong twice in a row.

@sammo21: There's a marked difference between "shitting on something" and being "cautiously optimistic about something." I watched all of this, and found that they were largely positive and excited about the showing -- they just weren't drinking up all the marketing kool-aid. You can enjoy a thing and still be objective about it.

Of course, I didn't come to this expecting them to act like enthusiasts, so I didn't have any buzz for them to kill.

@masterrain: its the odd disconnect people have in films too. People are dying left and right but, "Oh no! Don't kill the dog!"

Did you watch the same Sony conference I did? There were loads of them in there.

They announced Grim Fandango so fuck everything else I guess.

@sammo21 I've played enough indie games to last me a while and to realize I didn't need a 400 dollar game console. It's called post sales remorse, and all they keep showing and giving away are these tiny project games that I have no interest in. Sure others might, but the fact remains that if they continue to shovel out bloatware like this, then what's the point in 'next gen' tech? Let's all just get an Ouya and call it a night.

I'm not saying there's no room for it, or it's not of interest...but when it takes up more than it's fair share and becomes almost continuously flowing, then I have to question why I bought the console so soon. 2015 apparently will have some great games...so I bought the console in 2013... I have to wait a year to two years to play a title that will utilize it? That just seems a little out of whack. That's a long time to ask your customer base to wait to feel like you've actually made a good purchase.

And all these rehashes...it's becoming laborious. I want something new and interesting to play on my console. UFC is looking all right... Destiny is kinda wearing thin after seeing some of the vids here...I don't think it's fair to say it's all negative and cynical when someone has a long history with digital entertainment and is tired of seeing the same BS year in and year out. And these indie titles don't seem to be bringing at a lot innovative ideas into the mix without it just seeming like a one trick pony type approach.

@sammo21: Yeah but thats because animals usually have no idea, opinion or impact on whats going on around them, which makes their deaths extra tragic. Also, elephants are among the most intelligent animals on earth and have a very developed emotional range. You'd have to be a REAL dick to hurt one, I think.

In real life I mean.

if the Arkham Knight just had those tanks manned, Batman would be powerless against them. Batman looks cool, but I'm honestly over the series by this point.

I'm not sure about the xbox services, the box hasn't even launched in most territories outside the US and Select european countries. And when it does, at least in my territory, it's confirmed that it will not launch with any of the flagship services.... so.. no, I personally find the services on the Sony side a lot more global.
Possibly In Australia Xbox will implement some of their cool stuff, but you guys still have data caps..and drop bears... it's crazy there.

About the conferences, I also feel they lacked a bit of power especially considering the punches thrown last year, but I'm pretty happy about most of them ( not you EA )

Also, it was obvious that fallout 4 wouldn't be there, and most sources clearly stated so. As Patrick said a while ago, bethesda doesn't really need a conference to announce their games (that I feel are criminally overrated).

Maaaannnn, that middle chunk of the conference, that was almost as boring as the presenters were awkward. They just hit hard at the end to convince people that the 2 hours was better than it actually was.

You'd think that multi-million dollar company like Sony could find someone who could help them edit and streamline their presentations. It isn't a mystery: as a regular spectator you can tell when it drags. That Powers section was the worst offender. Even with it looking like an interesting series etc, they found a way to make it boring as hell.

Plenty of good things in there. Just find a way to trim out ~20 minutes of fluffery and bullshit.

I took about half an hour out of the Sony conference so we can all relive the 2014 hype that wasn't quite there throughout the original 1 hour and 50 minute runtime.

If GTA V "was not that much fun to play" why did it get 5 stars? Seriously, guys.

I'm sure it was the enthralling "Powers" discussion that pushed them over the top. Either that, or their lack of commitment to Vita.

Jeez this one was boring. Microsoft was more consistent, I thought, though they didn't have any wow moments.

I think people are generally tired of seeing the same shit (the order is just a cover shooter, halo 5 just being another fps, the halo and TLoU remakes, and destiny being a glorified multiplayer fps) over and over again. I laughed at the ubi conference when the guy was going on and on about how assassin's creed is going to be different this year, like for reals guys. And it just turned out to be assassin's creed with friends.

I didn't spend 4-500 bucks on a console just to have the same experiences I've been having for the past seven years. If I'm getting kinda cynical when I've only been at this for about ten years, then I can understand why people like Jeff seem to feel the way they do when they have been seeing this same stuff for much longer. Every generation they say, hey people it's gonna be fuckin' wicked awesome. We are going to be able to do shit on this stuff that was not at all possible on the last gen stuff. Problem is, all that stuff ever seems to be is prettier graphics.

I am however quite interested in no mans sky. So long as it is as smooth and seamless as what they were showing in the presentation. That looks like something that truly wan't possible on last gen consoles. I want more of that.

Oh and if all I really remember of a press conference was the batshit boring part in the middle where they thought it was a good idea to push shit that really shouldn't be at a show about video games, they most certainly didn't 'knock it out of the park'. In fact, I don't think any of them did for the reasons stated above.

Far Cry 4 looked fun, but I'll wait to actually play it before I care. No Man's Sky on the other hand seems like it'll be the best thing in the fucking world -- even if all you're doing is exploring.

Loving the MST3K-like commentary. The only way this could be any better is if we had small silhouettes of the crew laid over the video at the bottom of the screen.

That conference could have been really, really strong if it had been edited more aggressively and the phrase "console debut" wasn't uttered about 10 times. The third party stuff looks great, but I didn't see a lot from Sony first party that really interested me. I feel kind of let down after how hyped up everyone on the internet was about this conference.
