Mailbag: Giant Bomb Mailbag: Not for Girls Edition

Canadian candy is weird. Actually, Canada in general is weird.

What's in the mail? Is it an old T-shirt? A lunchbox full of rusty knives? Video game treasures? Canadian energy drinks?

I always thought those candies were popular North American wide, it's good to see other Canadian listeners.

Yorkie bars are fantastic.  I especially recommend the Raisin and Biscuit variety.  And no Jeff, there isn't a direct counterpart.  Though as someone mentioned, the Galaxy bar is marketed towards women more than men.  The Mirage bar sounds like an Aero, and those Humpty Dumpty things are clearly Hula Hoops.  To fully appreciate them, put as many as you can onto your fingers and pretend you're an English chav.

So a Yorkie bar is apparently from Britain, not Canada, which leads me to ponder why no one has sent in some spotted dick from Britain yet. And for those of you who do not know what it is, look it up, it's like a raisin pastry.. thing.

Mmm...Coffee Crisps are good. I used to find them at the Dollar Tree occasionally.

It was ok for me to watch the video, right? It's just the weirdo chocolate bar that's not for girls? Men's Pocky is silly like that too.

No... Smarties aren't very good in many peoples opinions. It's not just Ryan not liking anything. :P

Weird... coulda sworn they were called Rockets down there when I bought those, but maybe I'm getting mixed-up memories. Thanks for clarifying, though! "
Ryan hates on a LOT of things, and many people like Smarties.

According to Wikipedia, what the USA call Smarties, Canada call Rockets and England calls Fizzers.

We have Yorkie bars in the UK and there isn't a female counterpart. It's kind of a joke behind it really is that it's only for manly men because it's chunky. With that said, I do remember a limited edition where they changed the packaging to pink and as someone else said, the raisan and biscuit ones are awesome, they come in a purpley type packaging from what I remember.

The crisps(potato chips) look a lot like hula hoops to me which is where that you said they're like pringles as in the UK they're curved.

Smarties in the UK are also called Smarties. They're similar to m&ms I guess but bigger and I don't find the chocolate in them as nice nor the sugar coating.

That would explain why the Yorkie wrapper only appeared to have English writing on it. Pretty sure it's the law that food products have both English and French on their packaging. I've seen plenty of imported foods here with a French ingredients sticker smacked on the back... in a city where no one speaks French...

Maybe I'm wrong and they just do it out of courtesy, though.

Its law in Canada that everything be bilingual =P Heres the kicker though: In Quebec they have their own provincial laws forbidding any english on buildings and shops. So all the stores have french names and streets are only in french. Most shops get around this by hanging english signs in the windows.. but still. They are dickish about it.

Also the Humpty dumpty brand is a resturaunt chain I believe, they also make chips and shit that I have never seen in stores, but always find their way into kids halloween candy bags.

Mirage/Yorkie are UK chocolate bars. I have never seen a yorkie ever, I may have seen a mirage. But then again? (I get the irony in their name haha.)

NOW, Things I need some 'splainin for:

USA doesn't have Coffee crisp? MISSING OUT! They are awesome :)
What are their smarties exactly? I assumed thats what they were like for everyone o_o?

Jeff is such a dick towards us Canadians hahaha. Moose sex. Colours. =P Shuddap!

ALSO, Anyone else notice Jeff opens the chocolate bars weird? The ends are serrated to tear easily?

Thats messed up, I enjoy non american style smarties because they have that soft crunch when you bite through the shell. Rockets are ok.. Pretty boring =P

Crazy that they have the same name.. Is it the same company? Seems like a weird conspiracy.. they should get smarties down there and call them Rockets.

Why has canada stolen all of our stuff?

First you open a giant bag of hula hoops
Then some kind of whisper/Aero chocolate bar
Smarties, that is all.
And then...a Yorkie bar.

I found this video funny! As a Canadian, I have never ever seen a Yorkie, the chip brand Humpty Dumpty. Smarties are gross, M&M's are a million times better! Mirage is a like a Areo chocolate bar, super good, and the BEST thing in there was the Coffee Crisp! How does America not have Coffee Crisp?

The not for girls stuff was part of there big advertising campaign here in the UK and possibly Canada as well? I think its because the chocolate chunks are preety damn tough to bite into and so "its not for girls" kinda thing. The ads were actually preety funny.
