I was very skeptic about Mario Maker (saying this will get boring after a couple of hours), but after seeing these GB Mario Maker sessions I must admit I was wrong: this is fucking amazing. Such a quality product.

A lot of Mario Maker's problems would be solved by requiring creators to beat a level three times in succession without any deaths, or perhaps clear it three times with three lives, before they can be included in the 100 Mario Challenge.

I've yet to complete a single run of Expert due to the number of levels which are basically impossible beat without complete random chance, because the creator has infinite attempts and the randomness only has to work in their favor one time.

Outside of the 100 Mario Challenge, I have no problem with people uploading and sharing those sorts of levels—it's been a lot of fun beating Dan's levels because I know they will be difficult, but possible to beat for a skilled Mario player. However the current structure of the 100 Mario Challenge and the lack of proper search/tagging/filtering options has really ruined a lot of the experience for me—and I bought a Wii U just for this game.

@dan_citi: Its because they are grumpy old people.

Long explanation: Mario maker is a great game, but the reason they get so much out of it is because of the nostalgia they have for these first few games they played such a long time ago. So while the new one looks amazing, its not giving them the nostalgia shot they crave, they NEED.

All the Patrick talk and the shirt made this truly great, even though the level seems a bit more tame than the last one.

Certainly wouldn't mind another one of these streams. (But please also finally continue Ranking of Fighters! @jeff@unastrike)

Yup, I can't play the whole game stylus in hand and I'm not gonna reattach it to the gamepad only to need it again 15 seconds later.

I had the same thing happen with my Gamepad, it started off with a hitch here and there but eventually got much worse. It got to the point to where if I moved the pad more than 4 or 5 feet away from the console it would completely lose connection. I researched it a bit and though other people posted suggestions that helped them, nothing worked for me.

Nintendo's inclusion of the Hand of God (or cat, etc.) seems pointless until videos like this are made. Viewers being able to slightly predict the input is so important.

He's clearly parodying those types of people and like almost everything. Sometimes it's obnoxious, but sometimes it hits. I felt like him calling Patrick "some youtuber" while wearing a fucking Patrick themed shirt was pretty hilarious.

Spent quite a while to beat this level blind.

I'm watching this video now to see why they ended up making the stand on POW block to enter door puzzle...I got stuck on that for a decent number of attempts, and ended up looking for secret blocks etc.

EDIT: Joke's on them. I totally brought the shoe into the underground and got the fire flowers every time, because you can "yoshi" the shoe to get back up. That POW block respawns.

EDIT2: *and* you can get out of the Koopa Party by stacking the trampolines. Never tried going down that last pipe though.

@00: it'd probably be simpler to disqualify levels with fewer than 10% completion rate after 200 plays, or whatever, from being in the 100 Mario Challenge. Maybe even make a harder difficulty explicitly for those unfair levels.

Next time on Giantbomb Makes Mario you guys should really incorporate the word "CHEMTRAILS", spelled out in cloud blocks, somewhere into the level for some good old GB-endorsed conspiracy-wank.

I wholeheartedly endorse CHEMTRAILS as a logical successor, or even addition, to POLICE STATE.

This is my favorite thing this site has ever done, bar none. As others have said, seeing Jeff be genuinely, un-ironically smiling despite himself is worth the price of admission itself.

That being said, one thing I would like to see in future installments is thematic consistency within a level. Or using some of the qualities of the original themes - for example, this time is an airship, but it would have worked just as well with any other background as a palette-swap. I'd be interested to see them try to stick at least a little closer to the themes of the backgrounds. Maybe I'm alone there, I dunno.

Fuckin' keep up the good work, tho, watching Patrick's soul get crushed is just Entertaining with a capital "E".

Honestly, <10% is much too broad to exclude. In fact, sub-10% clear rate is basically what MM's Expert mode already is. You can use the level-browsing filters to tell that each rating goes roughly 0-10 (Expert), 10-30 (Normal), 30-100 (Easy), with some variation and overlap around the edges of those ranges. If you want to play a 100-challenge that you should expect to beat, then the math alone says you shouldn't be playing Expert in the first place.

The bigger problem with Expert is that there's an absolutely massive gap between something with even a 5% clear rate and something like Dan's levels that sit below 1 or 2 percent, where you could spend all 100 lives and then still maybe not clear it. People in general are shockingly bad at playing old Mario games (for example, if you include anything that might require spin-attacking or spin-jumping or even fireballs, you're going to have a horribly low clear rate unless you add a section of the level to explicitly remind people that spinning/shooting exists), so even a lot of levels intended to be in the style of a relatively hard level from real Mario will still end up being 5-10% clears, unless they avoid giving the player much opportunity to actually die.

A lot of expert levels (probably most of them, at the moment) are Dan-style superhard levels or fuck-you-over levels or just plain bad levels that should be getting filtered out, but plenty of things in the <10% range are also what Expert was intended to be - that is, reasonable levels for people who actually know what Mario is capable of and won't get stumped by something like full momentum jumps or spin-bouncing on otherwise un-bouncable enemies (or sometimes just good levels that happen to be really long, and are hurt by lack of checkpoints). Unfortunately since it's also where all the crap gets sent, they're mixed in with loads of near-unbeatable nonsense.

I think the best solution would just be for them to add in an Ultra Hard or Super Expert or Impossible difficulty, or whatever they want to call it, maybe with infinite lives, so that somebody could find nothing but the most incredibly fucked levels if they felt like it. Probably for <3% or so.
