Giant Bombcast 03/17/2015

As St. Patrick scourges the land, we hunker down in our bunker to discuss adventures in civic planning, the glut of dumb cop-show games, Final Fantasies of all stripes, Ori and the Delightful Difficulty, the return (?) of Joe Montana, further uses for liquid cocaine, D&D death rituals, and more!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

In the UK, we don't pronounce the "L". It makes me wonder why Brad's way isn't the correct way though. Silent letters are weird.

@humanity: Great story with divisive gameplay. I personally thought the gameplay was fantastic. I enjoy stealth games and I thought the gameplay fit the world/story perfectly.

I understand how some people wouldn't like that sort of gameplay. Drew said he just ran ahead and died to figure out where to go next. But I thought it was super immersive and great.

@danryckert@unastrike If you want to watch Tales from the Krypt or Mr. Show they're on Youtube in their entirety. It's NBD no one is fighting for the rights, I've watched both shows as well as all of Dragonball(original) with no hassle.

More Jason content is always welcome. I have almost zero overlap with the genres he seems to favor but the man is full of reason and humor.

And he's done a great job on quick looks chiming in when the guys miss something that seems obvious.

I'm amazed how many people talk about being fans of the Nintendo era Final Fantasies who then became disenchanted in the PS1 era. For a long time, Final Fantasy 7 seemed like everyone's first time playing, and I was the odd one out in thinking the series used to be more consistent.

All things being equal, I'd rather the series continued to be amazing rather than what happened.

@epicopter: I also like stealth games which is why I didn't think the gameplay part was the great in Last of Us. In a less cheeky answer I just thought it was really lackluster stealth and the game world didn't abide by it's own rules most of the time i.e. not being able to loot ammo from gun wielding foes or enemies never running out of bullets. It's a videogame, I get ya, but then don't impose a whole bunch of realistic limitations on the player if you're not going to follow through with the rest of the world.

Jason actually plays games and can speak intelligently about them, so it's a damn travesty he's not a regular.

First with the L in yolk and then the L in Suffolk... and just to top it off there is an audible L in 'talk' at the end of the show. The thing that gets me the most about all of this is he pronounces the L in these words yet doesn't pronounce the L in solder... WTF is sodder?? The idiosyncrasies of Brad's speech make no sense to me.

Ok, seriously, am I the only one who has noticed that Brad always- ALWAYS- pronounces the L in "talk" so it sounds like "tawlk"? There was zero chance he was going to pronounce "yolk" correctly.

Just listen to Brad tawlk for a hhwhhile. To his credit, more than anyone else on the show I can always understand what he's saying even if the emphasis occasionally gets extreme.

It's almost like language is extremely fluid when spread over large distances and develops regional characteristics over time. Try pronouncing "solder" like it's spelled anywhere in the US and then wonder why everybody looks at you weird.

@cale: I've never heard anyone pronounce the L in solder. Ever. Seems like it's the idiosyncrasies in English is what you have a problem with. Here's some that are even crazier for ya:

The bandage was wound around the wound.

A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

The dove dove into the bushes

The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

The buck does funny things when does are present.

My favorite thing about all the FFX-2 talk is how someone on Gaf went back and quoted Brad's glowing review of it from its release. Which got me thinking about how Dan says he "hates Monster Hunter" in this podcast, and gave MH Tri a 7/10 for Game Informer; game reviews are often just completely full of shit, aren't they?

@marokai: Well, Brad didn't really say much about the game, just that he didn't remember anything about it. Which is probably fair.

Also, I'm not sure about GI, but GS back in the day used to give scores that often were not really reflective of the reviewer's opinion in order to try to look more "objective". Jeff's Majora's Mask review is a perfect example of that. I wouldn't be surprised if GI is the same.

I do however pronounce the Ls in Talk, Yolk, and Folk. Come at me.

Oddly enough, though I didn't enjoy FF7 as much as VI, I still found it an enjoyable game. FF8 was the beginning of the end for me. That's when it seemed like they had little idea of how to proceed after having a massive hit. Ah, well. What could have been.

This is the third or fourth time they've said that Cities: Skylines is related to the Cities XL franchise, and said that it's made by a different developer but by the same publisher - but Cities XL/XXL is published by Focus Home Interactive, and Cities: Skylines by Paradox Interactive. I'm pretty sure the name is more of a callback to Cities in Motion which was also published by Paradox (and made by the same developer, which they did mention but apparently never saw the name connection with).

I'm pretty sure Cities: Skylines has no relation at all to Cities XL other than the generic name, which Focus Home Interactive probably couldn't trademark.

The others I can at least acknowledge as being localized incidences of linguistic madness, there's just something about solder becoming sodder that will never be make sense to me.

I'll tell you what, you put the L back in solder and we'll drop the U from colour. Fair deal if you ask me. I'll even sweeten the pot by changing centre to center, you get that one for free -- just 3 easy payments and an apology letter to the queen is all we require.

Funny story about green beer: it's much more likely to be the dicey stuff that the bar's not sure about. Instead of throwing it out, toss in some green dye cause it's not like anyone's going to be wondering about the taste or why they're feeling so queasy after their tenth pint...

I really enjoyed having Jason on the Bombcast. It's nice to get more perspectives in on the discussions, and I think he compliments the others quite well. Great counter to Dan's bullshit too :)

@brad @danryckert Actually, your both right and wrong. Pronouncing yolk as "yohk" is most common (example 1, example 2). But dictionary.com does include "yohlk" as a derivative. So it's acceptable, but much less common. English is weird :) Also Brad, you do know that not every word is pronounced like it's spelled, right?

The NBA2K games have had a dumb fake Twitter since NBA2K11 -- MyPlayer mode uses it to give you secondary goals for each game, like "get 10 rebounds" for example. But of course, the game can't just say "get 10 rebounds" like a normal video game... No, you have to go to fake Twitter and read Donatas Motiejunas's tweet calling you out: "Yo @MyPlayerGuy, bet you can't get ten rebounds against me! I'm shutting you down tonight! #ShutYouDown"

The dumbest part is, even if you score 55 points, get 12 assists, 9 rebounds and win the game by thirty, after the game he'll still tweet "Told you @MyPlayerGuy couldn't get ten rebounds against me! I totally shut him down tonight! Suck it @MyPlayerGuy!" Like, you can practically see the if / then statement in the body of their fake tweets, it's really fucking dumb.
