Giant Bombcast 10/08/2013

Vinny attempts to live out his solo crime saga while Jeff bangs his head against Grand Theft Auto V's online component. Meanwhile, Drew learns a valuable lesson about a different kind of automotive thievery. Brad buys a Wii U in preparation for the inevitable port of Valve's popular new touchscreen game, Dota 2.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I sure hope the government and the corporations enjoy watching me eat pizza and listen to Ace of Base all day long as much as I do.

@pyrodactyl: for me the story in GTA V was the thing i liked the least, it was good, but most of the fun came from things I did in the word, including the side stuff. But more than anything I LOVE the online, have played with a crew of 5 every night for the last week and had a blast, most fun i have had in a multiplier experience in a long while.

You guys should check out VR Cinema (https://share.oculusvr.com/app/vr-cinema) for the Oculus Rift. That puts you in a virtual environment to watch movies; not entirely unlike what existed in Playstation Home. Also there was a more ambitious project that failed it's crowdfunding goal (http://www.roadtovr.com/virtua-view-aka-virtual-lounge-for-oculus-rift-crowdfunding-campaign-now-launched/) but I think there's still a preview version floating around.

So far the experience in the Rift isn't as good as a dedicated movie viewer device (like the Sony HMZ-T series). But about the time you get 4K screens in there it will probably be good enough. And as some of you guys on the show mention, once you are in there there are no distractions which is pretty sweet.

@thecheese33: Yuuuuup. I mean just look at some of the other comments here...Brad mentions that a particular helicopter mission isn't very fun because all you have to do is fly straight ahead, and people IMMEDIATELY launch into "BRAD CAN'T PLAY VIDJAGAMES!!! HAHAAHAAHHAHAHAHAAH WHY HE NO GET CONTROLS!!!!??!?!!?"

@mrangryface: Right? I'm a big fan of the people who comment on this thread SPECIFICALLY to say they no longer listen to/enjoy the 2 1/2+ hours of podcast that they're getting for free...

I feel like everything I've heard GB say about GTA 5 has been negative and yet it got a 5 star rating.

thats because in the video game industry youll get shunned if you give a GTA game anything less than 5 stars or a 10/10

No, that's because they put the editor's name on a review for a reason and it isn't the entire staff's opinion. Also: they've heaped PLENTY of praise on it (I mean this is the fourth consecutive week they've spent a lot of time talking about it, and frankly I like the discussion about the thing FEWER people are talking about), it's just easier to hear things one disagrees with more loudly.

besides praising the story and characters, ive only really heard Jeff complain about things in GTAV. The pointlessness of all the side missions. The over-aggressive auto aim that makes combat pointless and the terrible manual aim. The pointlessness of money and buying things. If this were another open-world game these things would be huge negatives and over-shadow anything else.

Yeah...if it were any other game. Apparently he feels the narrative and characters are good enough to warrant 5-stars. That's, like, just his opinion, man. I'd have probably gone 4/5, but to suggest he gave it 5 stars because he was afraid of backlash is pretty disingenuous, duder. Particularly considering his history.

all IM saying duder is that the Illuminati are controlling game reviews and are going to kill us all. I was just joking about the backlash. Just suggesting that people are willing to overlook plenty of stuff, specifically in GTA, because of its story. GTAV would be a much better game if it were more linear, and that plenty of other open world games get destroyed for clunky controls and having side stuff that have no point to them. Lots of games get knocked and criticized for "overstaying their welcome" and for giving you too much to do but not giving you a compelling reason to do any of it, ala SR3. But for some reason people just seem to give GTA a pass.

aka ive gotten too cynical and am tired of hypocritical crap from everyone.

See, this is the problem with posting sarcasm on the internet: there are PLENTY of people who've posted stuff like that (along with my favorite: "OMG BRIBERY!!!!!) in all seriousness, even in this very thread, to just reflexively know whether or not someone is joking. There are plenty of people on the site who have no idea what "Kane and Lynch" has to do with the current existence of Giant Bomb, so WHOOPSIE DAISY on my non-grokking. I actually agree that a HUB-based GTA would probably be a much better experience (especially with the likes of inFamous and Saint's Row rethinking from the bottom up what an open-world game should be). I also find it pretty funny that you're willing to say, even jokingly, that you've gotten too cynical when that's what most people accuse the GB guys of. Having listened to the Podcast, I have to say they have PLENTY of good stuff to say about GTA even outside the story, it's just that the bad stuff stands out so much more because the rest of the game IS so great.

Man that flying giant stone head vomiting guns in Zardoz is such an insane & wonderful image. Great movie if you're in the mood for such future madness.

Edit-also in the states here & do own a tea kettle though use the microwave more for making tea & hot cocoa. Tea kettle has been used more lately in quick quesadilla (sp?) making where 2 of them are put on a frying pan & then putting the tea kettle on top of the folded tortillas for about a min then flip for another min & done once the stuff is heated up.

Wait, so just because something is free means you can't complain about it? Well then I wonder how many of the staff got GTA V for free and judging by the comments they seemed to complain about it a lot. EDIT: I'm being dumb and sarcastic here but you get my point.

I mean sure, there are some dumb hyperbole in the comments but there's nothing wrong with criticizing something that's free since time is more important to some people and two to three hours is a lot of time to listen to a podcast.

That wasn't my point, my main point was the people who continuously complain about the podcast after listening for multiple weeks. Considering the length of the podcast, I'd think they'd have given up by now, if I were listening to something that gave me no entertainment value and took multiple hours, I'm not sure I'd keep coming back to it. I was also trying (ineffectively) to call out the people who just log on here and complain without even listening to the podcast (IE: I haven't listened in weeks, but here's what I think about the Bombcast!)

Well, I finally got around to playing Syndicate. According to the internet I either got a bum copy of the game or my ps3 is about to die on me, cause a lot of the animations in that game appear to be super janky, and from videos I've seen and stuff I've read on forums, I seem to be the only one experiencing this. Pretty fun game otherwise.

The example of the military helicopter mission in GTAV was amusing to me because the claim was that "all you do is drive in, park next to the chopper and fly off in it". I ran all the way around the perimeter trying to find a way to sneak in, then I pointed a sniper rifle at the guard on duty, and as soon I did that the base alarms went off. I then had to run on foot through the base shooting every soldier who turned up. So what was dull for you was a white knuckle ride for me. Just goes to show.

So much complaining from commenters, geez. Vinny's breakfast talk alone made the entire show worth it, and there was a lot of good discussion. Just because the guys aren't thrilled with everything doesn't make their opinions irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure your fingerprints just "grow back" after you burn them off, unless you really scar them or something. I got some concentrated HCl or NaOH or something on my fingers when diluting it in chemistry one time (turns out you can tell this happens because your fingers feel "slippery," because your skin is melting), and it definitely smoothed out my skin, but didn't seem to last very long before the grippy little ridges of the fingerprints grew back.

To my knowledge this week's edition of the Bombcast (unless they're in the middle of the show) is advertisement-free. There weren't any last week, either. They said it would be a few weeks before they incorporate them again.

Ah, damn. I liked the ads !

If you don't have Celiac disease, there is no point to eating gluten-free. Well, unless you just need to advertise to the world that you subscribe to the latest does-nothing-for-you dietary fads. Gluten-free is a thing simply because putting it on the packaging helps sales... because everyone is under the false impression that it's healthy. We're sheep.

So true. My friend has Coeliac disease and he can't really eat wheat either. I remember when we used to go to the bars he'd get straight vodka, because he loved beer but couldn't drink it. Occasionally he'd say "fuck it" and drink shit-tons of beer and just deal with the horrible stomach pains or whatever (I didn't know a lot about it). He has tons of health issues, so it sucks to see all these people claiming they have gluten insensitivities all of a sudden.

This was a few years before the gluten-hate fad. The good thing about this is that the few people with real gluten insensitivities can now get decent pasta, pizza, and even beer. Of course, that'll be gone when the fad dies.

edit: Also, bring those ads back. They're great. If anything they improve the podcast, as long as Jeff is doing them.

GTA V is better than IV, but Rockstar still haven't made a game anywhere near as good as their trailers for it. I'm not sure why the shooting in V still feels a bit wonky despite them having created Max Payne 3 which felt pretty great in comparison.

The story wasn't even that good.

I don't understand why so many people have the misconception that the team that makes GTA is the team that made Max Payne 3.

They are two different development teams.

Because the game engine is identical and so is the animation system used. There was a gif doing the rounds that showed this, there's simply no good reason for it to control so poorly in comparison.

So now you know.

Regardless of the engine being the same it is still two entirely different dev teams that made the games.

I am not trying to defend the fact that the shooting is as poor as it is, frankly I don't really care much at all about GTA5. But all this talk about how R* did such a good job on the shooting in Max Payne 3 and how that should by default translate over to GTA5 is dumb.

Fuck you Brad (and I guess the rest of the 'cast) for being so dismissive of the Zelda chronology. For whatever reason, it seems acceptable to care about one series and not another, and assume everyone else holds the same view on the topic. I, for one, care about the Zelda universe. I don't much care if they thought it up after the Legend of Zelda - implying they've had a plan since for the dozens of games released is preposterous. Now that they know people care (enough to release a Historia) they'll stick to it - the LTTP 3DS game is set post LTTP and is meant to make the ties much clearer, as well as being a good stand-alone game. But I digress. Screw you guys for assuming no sane human being could possibly care.
