Try Rick Dangerous for the Amiga: great, modern feeling platform game with completely unfair level design. Moonstone is a charming and extremely violent action adventure. Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck is a cute platformer, in the style of a linear Super Mario World.

Personally, I'm very excited about Battle Squadron, a really well-implemented vertically scrolling shooter.

Some of the lesser known but interesting games are Backlash (similar to Battlezone), and Psyborg, a really strange digital-control racing / puzzle (reminds me of Super Hexagon).

I am a pretty staunch skeptic and very critical of anything with even a whiff of pseudo-science, but there was a point in my life where my tinnitus was just taking over everything. I couldn't think of anything other than the constant ringing inside my head. I'm atheist and I prayed to god to help me. I'm a skeptic and I was buying herbal remedy/homeopathy bullshit. I'm saying I get the 'I need to know' feeling. I was willing to try anything at all.

Nothing helped. Just getting over a stressful period was what eventually allowed me to let the ringing noise take a back seat to other things. It's ringing right now and will continue to do so until I am dead.

I wish there was something like those glasses, but for tinnitus. I really miss silence.

I have a friend with tinnitus and it has deeply impacted his love and passion of music as well as working with video cameras for productions. Hearing this and experiencing first hand how it impacted his life truly makes me feel sympathy for people who have lost a part of their lives or deal with a lingering issue on their day-to-day lives that truly put them in discomfort.

I really wish I could find ways to help people other than offering support or "my thoughts and prayers" line, but I just don't know what I can do. I feel for you, and everyone else suffering from problems like this. We all have problems of course, but some are far more severe than others.

This in combination with Jeff's color blindness really makes me appreciate the fact I don't have any real problems with me at all. I'm a lucky one in comparison to what's out there.

But in a lighter note, thank you Jeff for producing such great content from the site regularly in this lull and holiday break.

Just went through GTA 4 a month ago, and I agree 100% with Jeff. People (Brad in particular) is very vocal about Niko being this guy trying to get out yet constantly killing people and doing dirty work at the drop of a hat must have been rampaging through liberty city like crazy. I was like jeff and besides stealing cars, I feel the need to cause chaos. I specifically made sure to focus on Niko as a character as I went through and there are definitely places where he does do things that seem out of character, but as a whole he is very reactive person. Seriously go through that game and you'll see Rockstar did a phenomenal job shaping a story where he is a man put in fucked up situations doing what he can to survive.

Why not rip the cast from Twitch recording and post it? Ok it wont be in 720P but it is better than nothing. Will people bitch that the video not in 720p even if it's a bunch of SNES or NES Japanese games?

But Jeff: Your interest and experience especially, with the multitudes of old games, kinda makes you a default expert per se. A scholar of this medium isn't a stretch imo. Because of that curiosity and your incredible memory of so many games makes you an expert at least(as a professional game reviewer over the years too of course)and as you go back and repeatedly play old games, and the many systems you own and have aquired, makes you a historian at least in some respect in terms of video games. Who else shall hold the mantle of video game scholar then if it is not to be you? :))

That and save your eyes for screens that really matter, lol. ;)

This video is a great reminder as to just how much Jeff's expression is in his eyes. Those glasses weren't distracting per say, but it was weirding me out with the lack of eye contact.

The whole time, I felt like I was watching Wayne's World 2 where Mike Myers talks to Jim Morrison in his dreams. The scene is nowhere to be found in English, so enjoy this Spanish version instead.

My main problem with GTAIV was that you could cut out an entire back third of the game's missions and really lose nothing. That and the excessive scripting was insane (when you repeat certain missions, you'll notice that the traffic you encounter is identical every time), which really went against the spirit of an open-world game; not allowing randomness to occur.

That said, still an amazing game. I never had a problem with the driving or base mechanics in general either (though the cellphone could have been handled so much better). The perfect scores seemed a bit much though for a very good but partially flawed game. I kinda felt like I was set up for a better game than they had actually delivered on, and I think that was the moment where reviews stopped mattering to me in general.

Vice City though, that's where it is. The tone, the music, the general atmosphere. It left a much bigger impact on me than San Andreas.

STOP ASKING HIM REVIEW SCORE QUESTIONS.

Every Jar Time ends up being 50% about review scores. Is there ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR LIVES THAT YOU CARE ABOUT? You get a dialogue with a guy who knows a shit ton about games history, the inner workings of the industry, and a repository of incredible stories, and instead you grill him because you don't like that some game has a score you don't like? GODDAMMIT.

Nah, it's just the simple fact that none of the games were designed with the Amiga in mind. Turrican 1 was developed on the C64 and later ported, Turrican 2 was developed more or less in tandem, but the C64 was still the lead platform, handled by creator Manfred Trenz. Mega Turrican was made for the Megadrive and ported to the Amiga later on as Turrican 3.

The first two games lose the impact of the sheer amount of stuff and technical excellence crammed into such a small machine, and the third game is just a poorer version.

I listen to this in the background and occasionally switch over to it again, and every time I do, the Blues Brother staring back at me catches me off guard. That's not a dig at the rad glasses, it's just unexpected.
Content: An article I read about glasses of this sort said the lenses make other color combinations hard to distinguish while the ones you don't normally see are more emphasized. I'm not sure if that means you get one of the other variations of color blindness as a trade-off, or if it's all a step up, so to say.

I'm with Brad and others. In lots of modern open world games there's this disconnect. Good guy in bad situation story, but watching them murder hundreds of people over the course of the game. I don't care who you are, murdering that many people has an impact, and doing so as so-called "good guy" trying to do right makes him look like a psychopath. Red Dead and GTAIV in particular really jarring in the snap between the character in cutscenes and the murderous mission guy. Take Drive, pretty much the best example of good guy forced into some terrible situations and decisions of the last decade. His violence is terrifying, but is limited and all makes sense in the story, wrapped up in need and revenge. Games have just too much mindless killing to do the same thing.

Sleeping Dogs was the game that finally made me see the harm it has on the game. You've got an interesting undercover cop story, trying to infilitrate the gangs without crossing the line, shocked with killing and seeing it all honestly affect him. He can limit himself to non-lethal fights and the "cop" leveling encouraged you to keep it under control and play as a good guy. Then the latter half of the game comes along, you get guns, and you end up murdering dozens of people every other mission. Completely ruined the narrative for me.

I enjoyed hearing you talk about the review tilt thing, I remember when I was 12 years old ( a long time ago.. ) I e-mailed in to gamespot asking why two reviews that looked like they should have the same score didn't, and you wrote back saying that tilt was the reason. I only really remember it because at the time I was shocked that I even got a response, since you were one of the biggest gaming sites on the web at the time so young me just assumed you must get a million messages. Something I always kept with me and a small reason why I continued to stick with Gamespot and eventually through to GB.

Also, keep the specs on whenever possible. Wicked texas hold-em shades.
