No, this actually _is_ rocket science, thank you very much.

I just got to the part where you realize that you're on a collision course with the Mun. You can raise your orbit so its out of the Mun by burning away from the Mun. You can see it on your navball and maneuver node. Its that blue circle. They're called radial and anti-radial. Burning radial will raise your trajectory and anti-radial will decrease it.

Radial nodes can also help you make a circular orbit too. When you're roughly halfway between apoapsis and periapsis, burning radially will increase your apoapsis while simultaneously lowering your periapsis and vice versa. I might have those reversed actually, but just experiment.

You're gravity turn was so much better, you see how much fuel a gravity turn saves? You did it a little strangely with the whole 40 seconds thing, I usually just turn slowly until I point at the horizon and then cut off engines when I'm at the apoapsis I want. Then make a maneuver node to circularize at apoapsis. But hey, your way worked pretty well.

Hey guys, great episode. One tip: when you're planning re-entry to Kerbin, there's no need to have your path actually intersect the planet. Doing that will make you come in way faster than you need to. Instead, set your periapsis to about 20-30km, and the drag of the atmosphere will slow you down enough that gravity will pull you down to the surface naturally. So, next time just set your periapsis to 20-30km, eject your last stage so that you're only the pod and heat shield, point retrograde and take your hands off the controls. You won't need them again until time to deploy the chutes.

@monkeyking1969: no, watching Vinny try to learn space at our humor's expense is better than just about anything this site could put out.

Maybe they could try a series where Alex goes back and livestreams bad games he gave low reviews to after this, but for now this is gold.

This is everything I ever wished they would do with KSP. Back when they QL'd it and such, I was hoping they'd do some more, on UPF or whatever, but wow. This is the new "Load Our Last Souls" for me. They have to keep going. YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING! Until Dark Souls 3, then you can do that... As well.... :D

I love that even the game gave up.

I wonder what they'll do about Munshot Check Fuel Line.

Okay, time to call it. This needs one more show, then no matter what, they move on to other games.

I hope this series never ends.

Once a month I could see. But, there are other games that should be occupying this precious time slot after eight episodes. Its had its run in prime time, now its time for an Austin game.

This is the talk of a mad man.

I really hope the next episode isn't the last! =(

In the preview at 1:54:41 they have an orbit that's entirely within atmosphere, an under 30km periapsis, and the heat shield pointed in the right direction. Something really whacky would have to happen for that to not be successful from there.

I know that the next episode has been recorded already, so I'll give this advice to others playing along at home, struggling to make it back to Kerbin.

1 word: Aerobraking.

*edit: tldr description of aerobraking: Taking multiple shallow passes through the upper atmosphere (maybe 50-60km) will let you burn off almost all of your speed for free. Multiple shallow passes keeps you from building up too much heat at any given time, so you're much less likely to burn up.

What's with that talk in the middle about Scott Manley? Is he trying to duplicate your setup so he can take you to space school?

Also, that ending...

At least there was some hope in this one, good job Jack! ;)

Command module doesnt need a heatshield, its already fire resistant and made for reentry.

Time to apoapsis doesnt have to stay at 40sec all the time. Basicly you wanna complete your orbit around the time you hit the apoapsis or slightly after.

@monkeyking1969: I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree completely, this is the best series on GB. This video is one of my favorite GB videos to date, and I've been a premium sub for like 5 years now, I've seen like a billion hours of GB content.

this. numbers and physics and stuff got people confused and angry i guess

One tip on the Mun approach (although it didn't really matter): you were on that collision course- if you wanted to get in orbit, the maneuver should have been closer to your ship, not close to the Mun. The further you are away from an object, the more magnified your movements. Hopefully that made sense.

When leaving Mun you don't have to get into orbit, you can just aim for Kerbin, at least that's what training mode suggests.

After a successful Mun mission its clear what must happen next.

Create a ship that can make it to the sun and get stuck in a decaying orbit so they can re-enact Sentient.

Or a mission to the Kerban equivalent of Mars and see how long till the Kerbins all eat each other.

Hey guys, when returning to Kerbin, you want to enter the atmosphere as high and as a shallow an angle as possible without simply shooting off into space again. This will allow you to burn off more speed in the thinner upper atmosphere where you will experience less heating. As the atmosphere drops your speed you will fall into the lower, thicker atmosphere where you will lose speed even faster.

This means that you do not want to have you periapsis at somewhere between 30km and 50km, and *not* inside the planet. You might have been able to save yourselves by burning radially outwards when you were still on approach at 150km, but by the time you were down around 70, you were probably already doomed. Also, when staging on decent, I like to turn sideways and jettison the spent stage parallel to me, so there's no chance me crashing into it or having it land on me.

Also, when leaving the mun, you do not need to go up nearly as high as you are. The highest surface feature is something like 8km, so you should be safe orbiting at 10km. As long as you aren't right next to a mountain or something, you can turn horizontal and start burning immediately after taking off from the mun and it will be much more efficient.
