I find the ridiculous over the top action and direction of Kill La Kill and similarly Gurren Lagann to be really obnoxious.

And I don’t really think this game looks all that visually impressive. Maybe it’s just my dislike of the art style but the 3D models look kinda bad at times.

I do not watch any ecchi anime, generally stay away from all that kind of thing, but Kill la Kill was an exception for me. It is kind of like nudity and overt sexualization is its own character in it. A lot of the plot and subtext revolves around the absurdity of fashion and "sexiness" and the will to overthrow that by simply being nude. There's even a faction who are called "nudist beach" because they despise the weaponized fashions that everyone is clamoring for.

I mean, maybe I just got duped into watching a porny creep fest by good writing and decent comedy bits, but its a heck of a well produced porny creep fest and if you are a fan of Gurren Lagann you will prob like it too.

@splodge: I'm a fan of Gurren and found Kill la Kill obnoxious in a way that surprised me. I kind of could not get over the whole "we are subverting the genre, while still actively being the genre" approach. Everything that I found fun and silly in Gurren, like the repeated animations of the heads chomping each other during transformation, I found really tiring in Kill la Kill as I once again had to see the closeup of these butts and the bouncing breasts. Not sure what it is but I simply could not get on board.

This series is one of the most intelligent most unique and artistic takes on societal norms, rebellion, leadership, or fascism I have ever had the pleasure to watch.

Look, I'm going to preface this long-winded diatribe by saying if you like Kill la Kill, you do you. If the flashy visuals or over-the-top character designs "speak to you" even at a superficial level, don't let my post in any way stop you from finding joy in this Sisyphean Torment we call "life." Again, you do you. Don't let a barely passable amateur blogger like myself disturb your chi.

What I can say, from the bottom of my heart, is Kill la Kill is one of the worst AAA budget animes I have ever seen my entire life. In fact, the show is one of many examples of Trigger not being able to graft their creative ideas to a full-fledged show. Kill la Kill's pacing is atrocious; it loses steam by its sixth episode; Ryuko Matoi is a bland and boring character; it never knows what it wants to be; everything about Ragyo Kiryuin in the story is gross; the late-season plot twist is dumb; the humor is totally out of place; there are entire episodes which are a waste of your goddamned time; it ends in a cavalcade of hot nonsense.

And the worst part is, most of the show feels less like a cohesive story and more a series of vignettes from Trigger's "playbook." When you stop and think about it, the show is creatively bankrupt. To illustrate, it has a tournament arc in the middle of its only season, because that's the only way Trigger could think of to pit Matoi against the student council. Kill la Kill's finale is so obviously their attempt at emulating the ending of Gurren Lagann it's laughable. Seriously, if Kill la Kill were a music artist, it would DJ Khaled. All it does is assemble a bunch of good ideas from other shows and applies a shiny coat of paint and filters so they cannot get sued.

It's a TRAVESTY this show won our community "Anime of the Year" award, something TWICE! And I didn't even talk about the internet zeitgeist when the show first came out, and everyone was saying it was "going to save anime." Yeah, about that. Last year, Trigger made the worst anime of 2018! YOU BOUGHT SNAKE OIL, YOU FOOLS!

Kill la Kill is actually one of my favorite anime. It's just super great, Gamagoori is probably one of my favorite characters too. His height being just 'bigger than you' is hilarious and fantastic, he'll always be the biggest character on the screen no matter what. So much style, the music is great, the action is great just everything is great. And if it helps in some way, the men wear just as little clothing as the women (if not more so?).

Bit bummed they skipped the cutscenes, I was actually really curious if they kept Nui's different animation style in the game.

@zombiepie: Gridman was a great show though :( Darling in the Franxx they only had a small hand in, mecha designs and stuff like that along with some parts of the first few episodes. Most of that show was A-1 Studios, I believe. I'd still say that show was solid until the last two episodes though.

I'm not a fan of Gridman. That show spends too much of its time faffing about and not moving the story forward. Also, the way Rikka, and most of the female characters in the show is shot to place extra emphasis on her butt or chest is gross.

Slight addendum to the video, but there are 10 characters, not 6. You unlock Ragyo and Nui, and then also there are dual-wield variations of Satsuki and Ryuko.

And, yeah, this series falls in a weird spot where despite its incredibly offputting exterior it’s very easy to read its theming as very positive/empowering. Very much a personal taste thing, though. Normally any amount of fan service kills my interest in watching an anime, but something about Kill la Kill’s vibe kept me bought in and I came out the other end loving the show. It gives you every reason to walk away on first impression, though, so I 100% understand why anyone would.

And of course even watching its entire run you could still feel that it doesn’t earn its bizarre aesthetic and you’d have a very strong argument.

Kinda falls in a similar space as Bayonetta where I know it may not come from a purely great place but it still works with a more charitable/empowering read for me.

I do kind of wish somebody on the quick look had a working knowledge of Kill la Kill, though I guess one of the problems with that anime is that you kind of have to watch half of it before all the satire becomes fully clear. It's kind of continually walking a thin line between mocking fan-service and becoming fan-service. I'm sure people disagree on which side it ends up falling on.

But it's a property I have enjoyed and that really goes some odd places with its plot. It's a thing that definitely knows what it's doing, even if it may or may not succeed, but is not just a weird skin/porn thing.

@robertspeedwagon: I pretty much agree with this interpretation. I'm not going to full-throatedly defend the show, but I found it surprisingly not gross after the first few episodes and it has a kind of relentless positivity and respect for its characters that make satisfying counter-readings pretty easy. It's one of those things that's so initially in your face and takes enough time to get into that it's hard to recommend to people who find the aesthetic deeply off-putting though.

On principle, I want to hate this game. Kill La Kill is easily the worst anime I've ever seen. The animation is awful, the characters are obnoxious, and the story is nonsensical and full of plot twists that seem to have been thrown in just for the sake of plot twists.

And yet, this seems like a perfectly competent fighting game. Good on the developers for making a decent game out of this garbage 5 years after the fact.
