Dan, PLEASE show Drew that he can use a knife to pick up mushrooms, snakes, rats, etc without wasting ammo and silencer.

I think you should think what advice you'd give if you were both playing for the first time together. If you see that he didn't read a text you read, for example the info about being able to reuse the mousetraps, then point it out...

At the very goddamn least, have him take off the silencer.

I really hope that, despite hating it now (under the pressure of recording content), Drew comes around on a second and third playthrough, when he has time to sit down and analyse the game. I hope it's his Dark Souls that he comes to appreciate it. I hate to think that he comes out of the MGScanlon series (past and future) hating Metal Gear simply because it didn't "click" for him.

Nothing Drew has said, in person at PAX or in site content, has led me to believe that he "hates" the game/series. Frustration at some of the series' idiosyncrasies, sure. But he seems to fully intend to play through MGS4 and maybe Peace Walker for the site, and maybe MGS5 on his own.

Besides, if he hated the game, he'd have stopped way earlier. As long as he hates MGS less than say, Mario Party, he'll be fine.

Maybe "hate" is a strong word, but he's definitely "hostile". He might have said, "I'll fight this game all the way!" jokingly, but he sure is doing exactly that.

Just as I thought "I'm surprised Dan doesn't have a story about being stabbed in the dick" he goes and tells a story about having a tick on his balls. Damn it, Dan! XD

RadioShack went out of business? I should go tell all the employees at my local RadioShack... They won't be happy to hear that.

Sorry brahs, they already know. It's a penny stock now.

"We sell the stuff you need to make the electronics you buy work the way it is supposed to work."

That's about as good a quote as the name RadioShack would imply... >_<

I don't get why you can't tell Drew HOW to play the game.

...

The fact is that Kojima crams a lot of peculiar mechanics into his games that are difficult to grasp with "gaming intuition". It's almost REQUIRED to have someone reinforce the basics for you when you're a beginner. I used to find MGS frustrating too until I watched Youtube videos of people who know how to play.

I don't get why you can't even acknowledge the existence of instruction manuals and instruction manga. and everything else developers do to teach their game mechanics. Particularly Kojima. Let's count.

  1. Loading the MGSHD PS3 disc, the game select screens say press triangle to view scans of the instruction manuals. MGS3 goes for 77 pages, from the manga to how Transfarring works. If you buy a game digitally there is another way to view manuals, often still in the dashboard.
  2. Inside the game title, there is a poorly hidden section under Special > Basic Actions. This includes video footage of literally every technique you need to succeed.
  3. Playing the game, the codecs are well known for breaking the 4th wall describing painstaking details about how to perform actions, when they are needed.
  4. Would you like to buy the strategy guide?

Putting youtube or GameFAQs or a backseat driver ahead of any of these must be some kind of ADHD issue for gamers, I dunno. Instruction manuals are now a thing of the past, and modern games are designed differently. Ignoring them on older games is wilful ignorance, and it wouldn't take Drew half an hour to read it while rendering videos.

Ocelot really did start off as a whiney idiot before he became cool. The problem with the game is that it never really explains anything; I can understand why Drew would be frustrated by it, even if this is frankly less frustrating than both MGS1 and 2.

Bummed they missed the most important codec conversation with Eva where it basically confirms who Ocelot mother is.

I think my favourite thing about this episode is Dan making Drew backtrack all that way to get an item that you can pick up in the warehouse and don't really need it until then.

I've played the game for the first time when I was 15 and had no problem with the controls in the first playthrough. So I don't get the frustration with controls, being caught etc at all.^^

This is my sole complaint with this game: the bosses (besides Volgin and the Boss) are SEEEEEERIOUSLY underdeveloped compared to the other three core titles. They're also some of the weirdest and most interesting, so that's always a disappointment on these playthroughs.

Keep it up guys, I'm loving the series.

Sometimes Dan expresses opinions that I realize I relate to and then I feel stupid whenever I hear him verbalize them. In a way, Dan is helping me improve myself.

@deusx: Dan has been doing what I call his "rude cackle" since the beginning of this series. I'm not certain what Dan brings to the table here. The first one, he knew everything about the game, the rest, not so much.

Agree that Drew should spend time, even off camera if it's too boring to film, learning about the game. He is playing as a first time player and most first time players would go to the guides or tutorial if they had as much trouble as Drew has been having.

Also.Agree that he needs to understand that old games expected people to look at tutorials more than modern games.

I'm watching these for entertainment because I'm not feeling well and they are doing the trick. I wouldnt have kept on watching otherwise.

I feel the series goes the best and produces the best content when Drew is confident, has an idea what to do next instead of running in circles, and is more relaxed so he can respond to Dan's blather.

I respect Drew for not quitting. These obviously aren't the games he enjoys playing.

@falling_fast: thanks for the welcome to the forum!

Dan has said several times in these videos that he reads the comments and cares about them. Dan laughing at Drew seems rude. When they are both laughing at some ridiculous thing that happens, its different.

I have noticed that Dan is really good at taking advice on board, thinking about it and deciding if he wants to change. Sometimes he's too defensive, but overall he tries to listen.

I believe that Dan would not intentionally be rude to Drew and he may not be aware how he comes across to some people.

Man, these are really fun to watch, but I got so good at this game, I played it so many times I get itchy at all the shit he should do, or that he should pick up, but doesn't, ahah.

He's always hungry, and there's so much shit you can eat in the environments, hell just look up to almost any tree and shoot some fruit down and eat it, even those crocodiles are edible, ahah.

Also, in the beginning of the game they said they'd use the codec a lot cos there's really fun convos... proceeds to never ever use the codec, not even once, 3 episodes in. :P

In all the times I've played MGS3, I don't think I ever knew about destroying the food storage and it actually having an impact on enemies. That's pretty cool.

For anyone who is curious, I believe this is what Drew was talking about when he mentioned the German secret police (Stasi) disguise guide. You can search this on Google. I think the guy on the far right is specifically what he was referring to (Western Tourist).

It's really good to see the series bouncing back from the nadir of Sons of Liberty. I don't have a problem with Raiden, or the Rose conversations, it's just that the Big Shell was a terribly uninteresting setting, and the narrative's astounding pretentiousness gets in the way of telling its own story. This is a much more straightforward story, just a very, very weird one, like the original MGS, and the game is so much the better for it. I just wish Drew would take the time to enjoy more of the hilariously intricate lore hidden away in the radio conversations.

I'm with Drew, backtracking is no fun, and Dan having him do so to get items he missed is just poor planning. If they were that important, Dan should have reviewed a guide beforehand and been prepared to point them out when Drew was near them.
