I will never understand the appeal of Bullet Hell games. They're all the same.

1 billion purple and blue dots coming at you in intricate patterns? Check.

Weird combination of anime chicks and industrial/scifi themes? Check.

I watch these QLs of these games and I don't even know what to look at, mostly because I can't even make out what I'm looking at.

There's some neat system in place in Akai Katana that makes it a lot more than just avoiding bullets if you really wanna get the big points. I can't remember what it is, but it's what pop out those golden G's. It comes up in that "How to play" thing that pops up if you wait on the titel screen.

It's actually really interesting that Cave's games are somewhat easy to "play wrong" by just creditfeeding and mashing off the bombs, since it's not just about getting to the end.

If you think the enemy bullets are too easy to spot in the action, look up Battle Garegga and lose your mind. Screw that game.
 
 
This game meanwhile didn't go very well in Japan's arcades. I personally think it's because it was horizontal, a welcome change, but the writing's on the wall is that it was too easy to achieve the maximum possible scores.
 
Then their just months old arcade release shipped it's first load of PCBs with a lockup bug on stage 4..

Umm... or I said they all look the same because all the ones I've seen look the same. It's not really a huge genre like the other things you've listed.

The slowdown is definitely intentional. Apparently one of the major things people used to complain about in shmup ports was the slowdow being removed.
