Quick Look: Aquaria

I got this game from one of the charity (pay as much as you want- get these games) things last year for christmas.

I didn't play it enough to get to the shooting part. It starts off really slow and its really confusing what your supposed to do. I may give it another shot at some point though.

Any chance this game gets a XBLA/PSN release? I don't know if my laptop could run it.

I got this from the Humble Indie Bundle and haven't played around with it yet. Maybe I should finally jump into it. It's just staring at me from Steam.

Don't get me wrong - Aquaria is awesome... but why are they doing a quick look for a game that's 4 years old?

Cool game! Right now I am playing Ctuthu (sp.I'm sure), Savior of the World, my great intro to a JRPG..least as close as I will eva get.

Vinny has had a consistently cheesy week when it comes to jokes. "Sea Loaf Green". I love Vinny.

I really don't get the love for this game. I found it utterly boring, and uninteresting. 

I have this game.  For some reason, at some point, the map got all crazy with parts overlapping on each other and then I got always lost. Maybe it's me, but I can't play a Metroid-like game without a good map.  Too bad because I was enjoying the game.

I love Giant Bomb. Where else can I get Quick Looks on Saturday mornings? Now if I only had some cereal...

I remember seeing previews of this a long ass time ago and wanting to play it.Looks alright, we don't get enough Metroidvania style games.

You can try their demo from the official Aquaria site. It ran fine on my ex-laptop which was an old piece of sea loaf.

This was out during the Potato Pack Sale pre-Portal 2. Didn't like it at all.

You can change forms by using the number keys. You can also use WASD for movement and then use your mouse to focus on fighting. Using this control scheme makes it so much better.

Hey, I totally own this game.  Got it for Christmas last year in a bundle of indie games my sister got me.  I also never checked the game out because I was too busy playing Braid.  Guess I should check this one out.

Vinny said he just picked it up off steam in the last podcast, that's why. And yeah, wasd is the way to control this game, only use the mouse in small specific parts, and obviously for shooting. I used the songs to change forms for like 75% of the game. It certainly is a lot easier in later parts to use the numbered hotkeys(almost required), but I think the game loses a little something when you never use the verse manually anymore. Still, with like 8 forms, that's hard to memorize and be able to call up as quick as you need it.

I keep forgetting to finish this game.

This game was fantastic when I played it a few years ago. Gorgeous visuals, great music, interesting story. If you like games in the Metroid, SoTN, and Shadow Complex style, Aquaria is definitely worth checking out.

I'm curious what the sales spike for this game from the quicklook looks likes, compared to the Humble Indie Bumble sale spike

I should get around to finishing this game, I really liked it.

I had this game in my steam library for quite a while now, I think it came with a humble bundle, ima give it a try.

I remember playing this game when it came out back when I was in college and it's worth the 20 bones. It's been on sale a LOT since it came out and at one point you could get it for a dollar in a pay-what-you-want charity thing as well as just being on sale on Steam a few times that I can remmeber. Glad to see this game still has some legs.

This reminds me that I should beat this game one day.

I used to visit the site of the Devs when this game came out - it was an IGF winner a long while back, and took a long time after that to come out. Still, to repeat everyone else's comments it's a really great Metroidvana / Castle-troid (Castroid!). Also the music is really excellent.

I recall Alec Holowka (the coder and musician) saying at some point they were going to try and get it on XBLA/PSN but I seriously doubt that'll happen now. Derek Yu (the artist) is doing his own thing (Spelunky) and Alec is running his own indie company and working on a game called Marian.

Considering how old Aquaria is, shouldn't this be called a Slow Look?

I tried to get into this games twice but always turn off by the art style. May be it's too artsy for me. Also for a metroidvania game not having a good or usable mini map is a deal breaker for me.

Aquaria's a pretty great game in the Metroidvania genre, and it's hugely impressive that it's the work of only two people. I still listen to the soundtrack on occasion to this day.

Why not?

Generally they name quick looks of older titles Quicklook Throwbacks, I don't see why they shouldn't make videos of older titles, but it's a bit odd that they didn't have Throwback in the title, so it's more searchable for people who want to check out QL:s of old games later on (I certainly have searched for QL throwbacks on occasion).

Oh it's that character is Super Meat Boy :D

This game is pretty old... watching them play it makes me want to play it again. I got very far into it, but never finished it. Boss battles late in the game are very brutal.
 
And yeah, the game is open source so you can get a compilation by some dudes for free probably. Go check it out!
