EXCITING HOUR TRUE STORY:

I was pretty young when I saw Mat Mania (Exciting Hour) in the arcade and hadn't quite mastered reading yet. I always thought "Insane Warrior" was actually named "Ultimate Warrior," and used that name as my "I'm a little kid and I'm gonna be a wrestler" name.

A year later, some guy in facepaint debuted in the WWF and ruined my plan.

Back in my video game-making class in college, the first game I ever programmed was a straight ripoff of Crazy Climber, except I simplified the controls and made the birds planes that dropped bombs. I couldn't tell you what possessed me to do this.

Hell yeah a Pocky & Rocky mention. Today is a good day.

I really enjoyed Rygar on the PS2.

Good stuff. Dan and Jeff make a good combo on these. Also Rygar on the Lynx was awesome, stop scoffing!

As soon as I heard Jeff say "I'll perform this service," I knew he was doomed.

I couldnt get past the first 2 minutes. i know a lot of people love this stuff, but as someone who has been there from the start(yes, im old) i have no nostalgic feelings. I seen the weird of yesterday, show me the weird today.

Mighty Bomb Jack is actually way more complex than Bomb Jack, it's more of an adventure platformer. It was super ambitious for the time, but almost impossibly difficult. (Jeff might be thinking they're the same because Mighty Bomb Jack has interlude stages that are pretty much exactly like Bomb Jack, except that getting all the lit bombs doesn't just give you a point bonus, it lets you skip levels in the game.)

There's a Gamecenter CX for Mighty Bomb Jack, it's one of my favorite episodes. Highly recommended.

Edit: Wow, someone in the crowd in Exciting Hour is wearing an Einstürzende Neubauten shirt, that's pretty awesome

May Mania takes me back. We had a local ice cream shop that had several arcade cabinets in addition to Mat Mania when I was a kid. My buddies and I would get jacked up on sugar and spend all of our quarters on that game. Coco Savage was a beast in Mat Mania, I could never bet him.

OK, Ninja Kun didn't seem like a great game, but that level start screen with the sunrise looked fantastic.

My corner store had Bomb Jack, Rygar and Wonder Boy at different times as the arcade machine in the corner. I put so many coins into those damn games.

Jeff Gerstmann: Weak vs. Skylanders and overpriced arcade ports. Does not tolerate Yoshi.

That entire game is ripped off in The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare. The second half the "Bartzilla" dream is basically a short version of this, complete with "Marge-mothra" flybys and Homer Kong at the end...

I played waaaaaaaaaaay more of that game than I should have...

@undeadpool: Woah, thanks for the scoops! I played more Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare than I should have as well, though don't recall what you're talking about. Will have to check out some Youtube gameplay videos.

I want to see a gritty reboot starring Bomb Jack and the bucket from Kaboom trying to stop a completely power mad Bomberman from blowing up the last of the arcades. Obviously it ends darkly and Bomberman wins.

The stage starts with a city rampage, then you get shrunk down for part 2. It's a very, VERY bad game that I go back to every few years for some reason...

Got all the way up to B+ once...

I saw Superman, Stevie Wonder and all three members of ZZ Top in the Exciting Hour crowd as well as the others mentioned.

Yeah, California is horrible on the tax front. If I'm paying 8 for a sandwich, it's a big fucking sandwich. With chicken tenders.

I really wanna know what that game in between Bomb Jack and Wonder Boy is, the one with the thumbnail art that's simultaneously ripping off the covers for Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.

EDIT: Also, I played the shit out of Adventure Island 2 as a kid despite absolutely sucking at it, and would like to see them make a new one. It would probably end up being a character action game about a caveman beating evil snails to death with a stone hatchet, and I'm strangely okay with that.
