Quick Look: BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger

Looks like what MUGEN would be like had it been updated for 2009. Looks like they took an design cues from the archetypes populating your average ADV Sci-fi Japanese point and click games.

Jeff, ugh, don't ever heard of going to into button configurations to set your controller or to see what button is assigned to what..ugh..Jeff....I thought you were better at figuring out those sort of things.

Two things. The "S" button defaults to L1 on ps3 and left bumper on 360. Secondly, you CAN back out of the character select screen by pressing the SELECT button (or back on 360). This quick look kind of made me sad because you guys usually give niche games a chance. This whole quick look was just making fun of its uniqueness and blaming it for poor design because you couldn't look up the controls.

This looks awesome. Totally trying this.

The game definitely looks great, especially the high frame rate 2D animation, but I do have to say that the actual drawing of the characters during gameplay is only mediocre (judging from the HD videos I've watched of the game in action).

Also concerning the controls, why use A, B, C, D, etc. when you can use A, B, X, Y (which directly correspond to the 360 controller). I understand that the manual explains the button mappings, but why tell the player to press it the "S" button when you can just say "press the LB button?"

This game, like most other anime things I see, looks like shit.

Thank God they explained that the "tips" were not part of the main storyline.  Otherwise, I might have gotten confused.

I thought the fighting in the game looked awesome. The story mode is weird and that last bit was completely a WTF moment.

Jeff gave MK vs DC a five star.

That's something I just can't get past when he talks about a fighting game, especially one like BlazBlue, which is vastly superior to MK vs DC in every feasible category.  I like you Jeff, but your opinions on fighters are complete bunk.

I'm surprised at all the arguing in these comments.  The last 5 minutes of this quick look had me in tears.  One of the funniest quick looks ever in my opinion. 

That ending sold me on it; this influx of Japanese absurdist humor in games is one I'd be glad to fund.

The last 4 minutes of this confused the hell out of me to no end...

This QL disappointed me actually. I was never a fan of Guilty Gear, and Anime stuff is ok but never a fan of over the top stuff.

I purchased this game on a whim because I am a big fan of fighters, and heard a lot about this. This QL focused more on the design, and less on the gameplay. That is not good guys. You really did not give this game a chance. It almost looked like you guys jumped on it because of the design alone.

Giantbomb I would honestly suggest for people to give this game a chance. The gameplay is actually very very solid. There is a lot of stuff going, but it is controlled chaos. The game is a lot easier to play than Guilty Gear, the engine is extremely refined, and the game is pretty balanced. There ARE intro characters (the gun wielding girl named NOEL. She is the KEN of this series...flow chart tactics and all could be assigned).

I could go on, but I do not want to type too much on the comment. Anyone who enjoys fighters should at least give this a rent. Even if you hate the design you have to appreciate the fighting engine. The style is...just their thing.  This is one of those games that you could tell the programmers put a lot of effort into. I can sincerely say this is the best fighter (even you hate the design or not) that is out there now. On gameplay, tactics, and possible advance play alone.

It's actually the best $60 I've spent in ages, it's the single most unique, well balanced, overall ingenious and progressive videogame in what's seen as a static genre to come out in the last few years. It's downright redefined the possible scope of fighting games. I just want to see it get more press over crap like tekken 6 and street fighter 4, the kind of rote and derivative garbage that seems to have everyone flipping shits over being able to play 10 different shades of ryu's moveset along with a few joke characters. This game is genuinely breathing new life into the fighting genre, and has set the bar for general enjoaybility and overall uniqueness. Giving every character their own mechanics to work with (rachel's control of wind, etc.) is only a precursory glimpse of how deep the rabbit hole goes, and for once there's a fighting game out that manages depth while still having only 4 input buttons, one of which is an automatic "do cool shit as often as you press it" one.But yes, I am fanboying over this. I generally don't fanboy over things, but this is the biggest goddamn excitement I've run into since the first time I picked up a KOF game. "

The background art is amazing

Got the game and it's awesome...4/5 Stars lots of content for 60$

art style is freaken amazing.

nice QL, though I'm not feeling this game at the moment the more i look into the game the more interesting it sounds but when i look at the game play it just doesn't look all that great to me, when it comes out over in the UK (IF it does i cant find a release date anywhere for it) I'll give it a rent and see how it is

Jeff and Ryan were hard on this game, somewhat unfairly I'd say. But it's opinions I guess!

You guys are right though, way to much happening at once, can't focus on one thing without wondering "what the heck does that do!?"

Well thank God they're showing some respect for the Blaz Blue canon. As I understand it, a poorly animated Evangelion knock-off happened, and now people must wear impractical clothing and fight. Okay. Game's pretty, and it could be fun, but it makes no damn sense.

this game looks awesome... but I dunno if I want this, I'm afraid that if I paid full price I might not like it.

People rag on the absurdity of Blazblue's story, but since when have SF and KOF been stone faced outlooks on the human condition? I really don't see why people think this is so insane, it all makes sense when you play it.

am i like the only 1 who can watch the whole thing?=/
