Quick Look: Daytona USA

DO BUY A RACING WHEEL!

Anyone else played this in the arcades and memorized the shift-patterns to drift through turns? Amazing game!!

BEST. QUICK. LOOK. EVER!

I'm having such a hard time not instantly buying this now...

I've given so many quarters to this game in the arcades. Ahh I wish arcades were still around, and I don't mean the Dave & busters type.

I love that this game is getting some love. But no way can I play it in more than twenty-five cent chunks. I probably played more SF Rush anyway. Apparently my university arcade is getting back the cabinet of Wangan Midnight they so shamefully traded to a bar, so now I can finish off my cards on that sucker. The Initial D 4 machine they replaced it with SUCKS. ID5 is where its at! Lookin' at you Sunnyvale Arcade!

Just so everyone knows my comment about Patrick wasn't negative. I've just been noticing he's been appearing in more and more quick looks, especially with Ryan his new ER partner.

No wonder you don't "get" this game, you aren't even TRYING to play it right. So annoying to watch.

It's an arcade game so it is all about the gameplay and challenge, if you are just mindlessly bouncing off the corners it will become dull very quick.

The game review business seems to be inherently broken, as game reviewers become swamped with titles they need to play and finish.. and anything that is either too deep or too niche will get left behind, misunderstood.

Well, at least they put in a fucking rewind feature. Geez. And that's Scud Race you're supposed to be remembering. Aren't you guys paid to be into videogames?

The Model 3 racer patrick asked about was scud racer, althought they did release one of the tracks as an added bonus for outrun on the old xbox.

I just heard the guys say that for them, the Beginner track IS daytona as far as their concerned.

I have a question... Is it just me? or did anyone else play the advanced track, and consider advanced as the only track in Daytona. Choosing manual, and shifting gears on the corners to force the drift. Was this just a local Melbourne, Australia thing?

It's just a shame, you know. Everything about GiantBomb is awesome, and I love the production of their QL's.. but without genuine enthousiasm or (in a case of a classic title like Daytona) some reverence, it just falls flat on its face. As if they can't wait to stop recording and go play Call of Duty. Maybe the crew need a vacation?

This is one of those games I think about when I look at racing wheels and get annoyed they don't have a stick shift. 4th gear to 2nd gear to take turns, that's the way to do it while maintaining your speed!

@kuran: Now you're more reasonable, but I think you just like this game very much, and people... well, it's an old game. Don't expect much attention. Especially from reviewers, they don't have the time to play old games.

Daytona was when I was out of money waiting to be picked up from the arcade. You sit in the cabinet watching the game, and pressing the camera view buttons pretending to drive. The game itself was a little too slutty constantly giving herself up for a few quarters so even though she's legal, I'm still going to stay away.

I love the voice modulation.

I played this game so much it was awesome.

Considering all of the cars and tracks that were added to the Dreamcast version of the game, the only version I've played, this port of the original is too much of a step back for me to buy.

I didn't know it was possible to miss so many points in such quick succession. (and oh no, Patrick forgot about Scud Race? The game that instantly pops into everybody's head when somebody says "video games"? Burn Whiskey Media!)

I worked at an Arcade for a year and we had eight machines of this...The song still haunts my dreams.

How about over time people just don't really give a shit anymore? Not everyone gets a boner for Daytona USA. In fact, this killed a lot of my nostalgia, the game looks boring as fuck now.

This brings back memories. First grade, family trip to Las Vegas. Dad took me to an arcade. The arcade had one section dedicated to a 8 player setup of Daytona. Actually learned manual and knew when to brake on that sharper corner in the oval track. Didnt know that there was a drifting mechanic till now though :O

Daytona is one of the only racing games where I've always chosen manual transmission. Jamming it straight from 4th to 2nd to start a powerslide without hitting the break was awesome.

I remember when they first got this in my town awesome - man arcade games where so much better than what you could play at home on your Megadrive or whatever. Scud Race was the follow up to this BTW

I remember playing this at GameWorks, when it was brand new. I'm old.

Also, we really have run out of legitimate things to complain about if Patrick is getting hate heaped on him.

Do we have GB awards for every year? I want to nominate this for best QL

This definitely seems like it needs the racing wheel for that authentic arcade experience.
