Sheesh, continuing the watch the QL, the complaints just keep mounting.

"Well that was an unfortunate quest bug."
"The voice acting isn't good."
"That lockup right there is kind of ghetto."
"Some of the game looks kind of rough."
"The AI in this game is awful."
"The combat isn't very fun."
"The inventory is a drag."

I'm beginning to feel like you can only really like this game if you already have an appreciation for Deus Ex. What exactly is the appeal, here?

This game is full of references to the internet/nerd culture. There's a computer desk covered in stickynotes with memes written on them, a wall with Dopefish spraypainted on it, etc.

Man, I thought I'd missed a good section of the live quick look, but it turns out I somehow managed to tune in exactly at the start, which means I have nothing new to watch right now.

Wish the quicklook wasn't so far into the game, I don't want to spoil myself.

In any event, loving the game so far.  Nine hours in according to Steam but still in the first hub.  Most of the things people are complaining about don't really bother me and the upsides are epic.  It really feels like a 2000 era PC game with better graphics, which I never thought I would see again.  The area could be bigger, but other than that it's about perfect.

Yeah it's not really representative of the game. Jeff may even like it - at least that's what he said occasionally among the flurry of complaints but I'm not really sure. Listening to him talking about this game in this QL and on the Bombcast makes you think it's a 2/5 game.

I had a dream last night that my local gas station was selling this for 5 bucks I guess that means wait for the price drop hate to say it but the game just doesn't look that fun to play so if the story and environment is the selling point I probably could just watch a walk through of this game and save money.

The only right way to play this is at Give Me Deus Ex.. and at least three playthroughs of it, because that's what you need. You can go combat, you can go non-lethal, you can go without taking down anybody or being detected by anybody or anything. I pity the poor folks who think it's over after they run through it and skip the cutscenes and fast forward the chatter.

Despite the 'complaints,' Patrick straight up said, "I'm glad this game is not crap."

You can comment about the little things and still think something is good.  The original Deus Ex is amazing, but I don't think anyone liked the Hong Kong accents.

I get the strong impression that Jeff's comment "this is not a shooter" is totally accurate. Finding interesting ways to get around the combat seems like it should be your first priority. That appeals to me, as plenty of full-on action games exist. Having something a bit different is totally worthwhile.

It's a shame that they put boss fights in it that totally go against that concept. What a poor choice.

@Marokai: I like watching quick looks of games I've already beaten, and hearing their negative opinions really makes me feel like they understand the little problems I have with games. I'm more interested in watching them play a game for an hour and tear up facets that deserve it than I would be seeing them play for an hour and repeatedly say how awesome everything is forever.

That being said, I agree, they skew negative a lot, but I think it's just them being journalists, and trying to start conversations or spark mini-debates with each other. I just don't take their comments during a quick look very deeply to heart, at least not as much as I do the game they're actually playing. I usually internalize the points they bring up and discuss them with my friends when we're playing games.

I also think Quick Looks are the best Goddamned thing to happen to game journalism in a long time. There's something wierdly friendly about them, and they contribute to helping me put a voice (and thanks to the odd greenscreened QL, face) to all the names I see around the site. Having that adds a lot to the reviews and news I read here. It's really helpful to read a review by Jeff and hear him saying it all in your head.

Now only if we could get a proper Shadowrun game...

I was prepared to ignore - even hate - this game. Jeff's commanding voice made me do a 180°.

It's great to hear a voice I trust now for 10+ years - still reaching through my gamer-cynic firewall - debunking the marketing blah and n00b-reviews equally.

It takes half a sentence and/or just a pause usually, depending on the tone he has chosen, to make me understand, what he's trying to tell to his audience.

Even though this is being highly recommended, Practically over eighty percent of the game footage in this quick look is full of all of the issues Jeff keeps talking about...

Even with the issues the game has, it's still one of the best games to come out this year and is one of the top games of this gen. easily 9/10.

I also felt the good points couldn't be elaborated on, whereas the nitpicky ones could. Like Jeff would say several times "these emails are fascinating", but for a QL you can't really stop and read all of them cause you have to show as much as possible, which for the format usually means action, which he had to go through saying "This isn't the good part, this isn't the good part".

I feel like if you actually played it, taking your time with the emails and coversations and exploring areas and whatnot you'd get a better experience, unfortunately that kind of thing doesn't lend well to QLs.

Defiantly, i never let quick looks or anything of that matter even factor into my purchasing decisions, especially for games like this, also one of the problems he ran into where he had to restart the quest, i am about an hour past that part and i have yet to run into that problem, my only REAL problem with the game besides the voice acting and some odd animation during conversations is the ammo because i S-U-C-K at stealth games, even on easy mode in this game i am having somewhat of a difficult time in parts because of the lack of ammunition and its really hurting the experience. I like to blast people in the head and drag them in to a dark room and jack their shit. Not sexually of course.

3/5 stars. They broke the game in the first 10 minutes of the live brocadast yesterday and lost an auto-save. 4/5 is kissing someone's ass so they can review more games by that studio.

edit: also the voice acting is cira 1998 and House of the Dead. It's stereotyped, racist, and just poor. Coming from Montreal I'm not suprised about the racism part at all.

What are you talking about? Giant Bomb frequently buys their own games to review when they don't receive review copies, anyway.

Everything looks very rectangular, especially that apartment and that bathtub. Maybe that's just the future.

Does anyone else find that the hallways and the doors look too wide? The whole environment seems to be stretched into widescreen mode at the last minute. Seems like a game I would enjoy watching someone play like this long quick look.

I'm 4 hours in(still at the beginning really) and I am captivated. This is a great game, despite some animations and the SUCK ASS LONG load-times. I laughed when Jeff referred to the 'pretty' helicopter pilot. I'm attracted to her also, but she doesn't look like she likes men. Also when she is animated, she twitches like she has the beginings of Saint Vitus dance-disease. As for that ponytailed prick-asshole inside Sarif offices, I will pretend there is a key prompt to pee on him before I am done, for all the laughably bad and cheap things he has said. Thanks for the pro-tip on stealing his protein bar from him, Jeff (Deus EX contrivance) But you know what, this game has me. It rocks. I think the GB crew had waaay more trouble, and noticed more negative things than I did. I'm enjoying it (I've done noting but waste my time on Deus EX games for the past 5 days), just the load times..just those. Pre-ordered the reg. copy on steam.

You know, a lot of Jeff's complaints (e.g. very limited ammo, annoying inventory management, manually entering codes you already have) were actually fixed in Deus Ex 2. Not that I'd like to see universal ammo in this game, but it did demonstrate that their predecessors had already addressed a recognized problem in the original source material. Maybe the devs shouldn't have been so stubbornly dismissive of half the existing franchise, eh?

Everyone says they want great AI for a stealth game, but think about that for a second. Would you really?  Playing stealth in this game or any game really is already pretty challenging.  What if they also had super advanced AI?  It would just be a pain in the ass.   I feel that in a good stealth game, the A.I. has to be pretty stupid. They have to take way to long to notice you, they have to give up searching for you after you nearly shot them in the face declaring "It was probably just a rat."  Other wise, it would just be no fun to sneak around because you would be caught every 3 seconds.

@XChairmanDrekX: I really don't see what everyone's problem with the AI is? I've played a lot of games and the only game I can ever think of that the AI blew my sock off was F.E.A.R and It was because of the reactions. It was fun to hear an "Oh shit!" as I tossed a grenade at a NPC's feet or the last man standing yelling and running for his life. I have to say in Deus Ex I experienced a part where the AI surprised me because I ran for cover and the guy was on the other side of a stair case, as I was reloading he ran around and shot me right in the face at point blank range. Also the so called ammo problem is fixed if you don't confront the AI. The reason you can't find enough is because they unload all of it at you and if you don't get to them in time THEY DO RUN OUT OF AMMO. I have had plenty of instances where regular dude (not boss fights) run out of ammo. That is my two cents!

Did you say the same about all the game of the year awards that Fallout 3 or Oblivion got? Bug's are not the only measure of a games quality, especially if they are uncommon or not game breaking. If it's a major concern of your's I'd recommend you read the review text for bug discussions and ignore the review score.

Also, the more ambitious a game is the more bug's its likely to have. If you want to avoid unpolished games stick to linear hallway shooters and the like, but I'm happy to put up with bug's if it means playing an open story with a large number of branching paths.
