Quick Look: Dragon Age: Origins

this is going to be great

This is going to be the thing that is going to tell me if I should buy this game or not.
I'm a fan of Bioware and a fan of Baldur's Gate, but everything I've seen of this thing hasn't intrigued me enough yet.

Quick note that there are no spoilers in this QL. We're trying hard not to show story elements from the game. This is also VERY early in the game, you'll notice I only really have 1 other real party member. For you hardcore guys know that the combat strategies become quite more complicated later in the game. We're just consciously trying to save you from spoiling portions of the game for yourself. Accept that as my caveat. 
 
Also our screen in the office crops the image a bit which is why I didn't notice the level up icon on Allistar. 

I wonder how the console versions will be?

Boo, at work currently and have class right after. Will have to watch this later tonight. Can't wait though.

Dave, any way we can get the specs you're running? I'd rather play the PC version, but would like to know how well I could even do so.

I feel bad that I'm getting this for the Xbox 360 since the PC version interface looks so much better, the interface for the Xbox 360 version just looks crappy. I would get it for the PC if my computer could only run it :/

That looks awesome, in both senses.  The flaming barricades / mage looked great from this side of the QL.

I love Bioware but not digging Dragon Age from what I've seen so far.

Wow. IN-TENSE! And now I totally want to play this... except I already have Demon's Souls and Way of the Samurai 3 on their way from Amazon. Plus, watching this, I doubt my dualshock 3 would be able to handle this kind of multi-tasking properly. If I was a PC gamer, I'd be all over this kind of challenge. Looks great. Dave is my favourite QL guy (please do Demon's Souls Dave), but can someone adjust his audio levels? He has that soft-spoken deep voice that gets lost in default audio recording levels. I don't want my subs to handle part of his (and Brad's) voice. I want it to remain mid-range. Please? Pretty Please?

^ Damn I was wrong.  Just finished watching the quick look.......I'm going to pass on this game.  I don't like how you have to constantly pause this game multiiple time during every single battle so you have time to heal your guys.  Too bad they didn't include an interface more similar to WoW where you can keep someone selected and just hit the icon in your action bar to pop off a heal.........unfortunately this quick look shows that you have to pause click the icon in your action bar then drag it up to this character you want to heal then unpause/heal.......this is WAY more time consuming then it should be in my opinion....no thanks I'll pass.  I'll stick with WoW and Oblivion until something better comes along...... thanks for the Quick Look because now I can scratch it off my games to buy list and save 60 bucks.  :)

As always, I will roll an archer/thief. Nothing like plundering dungeons and shooting dragons in the eye with a flame arrow!

Can you not focus fire in this game? I'm surprised someone who plays as many rpgs as Dave wouldn't have all of your dudes attack to same guy.. Lowering the enemies total Damage output as fast as possible is a no-brainer in any rpg. Especially because this game looks like its somewhat challenging.

I would say that this Quick Look will influence my purchasing decision.

This Quick Look is awesome......but not the game.   I think this game will get pawned by Demon's Souls future popularity.

I wasn't sure on this game but I want it now. It looks great and hard-mother-effing-core. Definitely getting the PC version though, I thought the 360 version at E3 had pretty awkward controls.

Dave - I have yet to hear you say anything about it and I was wondering it since it would make your battles WAY easier.
The yellow "elite" mobs - can they be crowd controlled? WInter's Grasp seemed to freeze the target, so going by the assumption it works - it's a priority to cast that on yellow mobs and not just whiteys?

Is there a way to boost mana regen in combat bar mana potions that you know of? [Now it seems to work alot in the way of spells/day except you have to take into account mana cost and you probably choose lower cost CC's then mass damage single target spells, right?]

And did you figure out the mechanism behind critical hits? Since it's no longer a D20 game, I'd assume percentages that basically work the same way. I couldn't find it in the limited time I had.

Fuck yes, I've been waiting for a truely old school CRPG for a while and this looks to seal the deal.

I like rpgs and all, but nothing compels me to be interested in this. It kinda looks like they took the LoTR films and slapped a coat of slime on it.
