I was thinking they'd re-release the 3D platformer for the PS2. Never played much of that.

I keep mixing the name of this game with that ghastly Lair, I still can't believe i chose that game as a free game over CoD 4 when I bought my PS3 all those years ago...

Why would they ruin beautiful 2d drawings in the main menu with those obvious Photoshop airbrush shadows and highlights? It looks horrible.

Just a quick point or two to clarify the difference between "Arcade" and "Home".

The Arcade version of Dragon's Lair had a set number of branched versions of the castle, with the falling platform stage allowing you to alter the order slightly mid-progression, and character death causing the current scene to shuffle to the end of the queue of scenes that you need to complete.

To reach the Dragon's Lair on a standard Dragon's Lair cabinet you need to complete every level once (including every mirror instance of a level that has one) and hit the qualifying point level 250,000+ (which you can't really do without completing all the levels, but once you pass 250,000 you know you're pretty much in queue to do any levels that you previously died on).

Essential to the "arcade" vesion is that when you die, you don't immediately get to re-play the level you died on, which makes it harder to memorize the required moves.

Also, the "arcade" version does not have the opening sequence with the draw bridge and moat/tentacle monster. It's actually on the laserdisc in the arcade, but a machine with standard settings will not play that board at the beginning of a play-through.

The "home" version of Dragon's Lair has the drawbridge level, plays the levels in a distinct order and it allows/forces you to immediately replay the level that you died on.

As a lifelong Dragon's Lair aficionado I give Digital Leisure a lot of credit for these last rounds of home and portable releases (everything since the Blu-Ray remastering). They're 99% arcade authentic with only a few very very minor differences. However, the ultimate credit needs to be given to the guys at the "DAPHNE PROJECT" who created the PC/Mac laserdisc arcade emulator that really paved the way for AUTHENTIC home versions of games like Dragon's Lair.

I've owned various iterations of Dragon's Lair 1 2 and Space Ace. I would disagree with Ryan and say they are genuinely fun, yeah the timing can make you pull your hair out, but the animation is just stellar. There was something oddly satisfying about guessing correctly, all the arcade versions had were either flashes when it made no sense where to go or subtle hints, adding arrows and sword icons is pretty silly.

@Willin: Yes grasshopper. There is a lifetime of learning ahead for those who wish to become a Dragon's Lair Master.

First you must take a spiritual journey to find your Dragon's Lair calling. (Preferably back-to-back screenings of The Secret of NIMH and An American Tale)

Then and only then will you become a Dragon's Lair Padawan to a Dragon's Lair Master. Only a master can explain the finer points of the timing and where you can pick up those extra points on select levels.

Next you will become a Dragon's Lair Journeyman, then a Dragon's Lair Apprentice, and finally after years and years of hard work and dedication, after mastering every level and obtaining the natural perfect/maximum high score allowable on real arcade hardware will you earn the title "Dragon's Lair Master". Little known fact, Don Bluth drops off every certification personally. Gary Goldman if Don is busy.

Alternately, you can just go to GameFaqs and print out a move list.

I remember when I was young I kept seeing ads for Dragon's Lair and it kept being released for everything. I thought that it must be good. Why would they keep reproducing versions of a game if it wasn't good? Man I was wrong.

Really hard to play the game & watch the action due to the freaking tough timing of the controls.
